Marvel Studios’ The Avengers was a massive success, and while most fans were left satisfied by the film as a whole, Marvel kicked off another whirlwind of anticipation with the film’s post-credits scene in which the comics supervillain Thanos was first glimpsed.  Speculation ran rampant that the cosmic baddie would be the foe in The Avengers 2, but that turned out to be false as Joss Whedon and Co. instead settled on the robot Ultron.  And so it appears that Marvel is playing the long game when it comes to Thanos, but his time may finally be drawing near as the character makes his first in-movie appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, opening in theaters this weekend.  Josh Brolin was cast in the integral role, performing the facial performance capture for the character after principal photography on Guardians had already wrapped.  Though Thanos isn’t on screen for too long in the film, he certainly has a memorable presence.  Now, on opening day, Marvel has released the first official Thanos image from Guardians.

If you so desire, hit the jump to get a good look at the Big Bad in the first Thanos image from Guardians of the Galaxy along with an extended recap video of Marvel’s Phase 1 & 2.  You can check out the film in theaters this weekend to see the character in action.

While Thanos certainly has a presence in Guardians of the Galaxy, fans are still waiting to see Marvel fuflfill the sinister promise from the tag on The Avengers.  It’s usually pretty futile to try and guess what Marvel is going to do since we all just knew that Thanos would be the principal villain in Avengers 2, but now that the role is cast and the character has appeared in-movie, I would wager that things are building towards an explosive standoff between Thanos and our Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes in Avengers 3.  He may even return for a bigger role in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which was recently slated for release on July 28, 2017.

Anyway, the official Thanos image was revealed in the following Phase 1 & Phase 2 look-back video, which was initially shown at Comic-Con last weekend:

It was so fucking good. They better lock James Gunn down for the sequels NOW! Just a fun fun fun movie. It’s weird watching a person become a star right before your eyes. Get ready for Chris Pratt overload! I bet he’s the new “it” guy over the next year or so. God! I can’t imagine how stoked his agent is. Probably getting bombarded by calls and scripts. Lucky talented man. I have a bro crush.

    • Drake

He’s already signed on to write and direct GotG 2, at very least.

    • unknown_xho

Pratt is definitely the new “it” guy of Hollywood. GotG AND Jurassic World? Mr. Franchise Juggler

  • Person

Looks like he stole Professor X’s rocket chair. I’m gonna over-analyze this and say that there’ll be a crossover.

  • World’s Finest Comments

Marvel heard Warner Bros. wasn’t going to release the Batman v Superman teaser to public, so now they’re like “Here’s the Thanos image from Comic-Con, because we don’t like alienating our lotal fans and being @#$%ing tedious like that!”.

    • tonymatthews

Also, they don’t like to release shitty movies and cast improperly and hire hack directors and writers

      • GrimReaper07

Chris Terrio is a pretty good writer and Martin Campbell can occasionally be a great director. He just had a (very) off movie.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

You sir are correct. Casino Royal and Goldeneye are two of my favorite Bond films. I think the production was rushed and he was more of a hired for director w no real vision being given to the film as there is no Kevin Feige over seeing DC’s films.

      • GrimReaper07

The guy has made bad films before though. Green Lantern wasn’t his first. Still, he can be really great at times. Definitively not a “hack”.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

I agree. When he’s on he’s great. When he’s not then the product comes out mediocure but never unbareable (Legend of Zorro comes to mind). Still I think Green Lantern was his worst film to date.

      • Person

He was clearly out of his element with the CGI material (if you watch the behind-the-scenes stuff, there are entire scenes that are shot against blue-screen with almost nothing practical), and the script was a hacket job of a half-dozen mediocre writers. The movie was doomed to fail, and Campbell went down with the ship like a dutiful soldier. I hope he resurfaces.

Yeah, Marvel’s formula of remaking the same movie over-and-over with a different-powered protagonist in a different-coloured suit by actors getting “their dues” after all their time out of the spotlight (which means being paid buckets, so they’re all sell-outs) whilst being directed by yes-men and button-pushers is a much better model for comic book movies. Because if you like one, you’ll like ‘em all, and Marvel barely have to try.

      • MajorUndeclared

Dollar, what’s your problem with Kool-Aid?
        Drink it up. It’s harmless…..
Also, you will be called a troll for what you’ve said.

      • Mezmero

And who would you cast in the movie?? Don’t tell me Cris Nolan as everybody and director LMAO! MOS was successful across the board just because you idiot fanboys talk shit didn’t make it any less. I want to know how much success you had at the boxoffice and how many films do cast??

      • GrimReaper07

“I want to know how much success you had at the boxoffice and how many films do cast??” This is one of the laziest arguments on the internet.

Why would they release it now when it will be overshadowed by this film and butt hurt fanboys who never STFU? After all the shit talk you mad they won’t show the teaser trailer for the movie you hate but never saw. I bet your mad the Wounder Women show was canceled but guess what it sucked,so now we get a movie and not a corny ass show.

I think they definitely mo-capped Brolin for it, because I could totally see Josh Brolin underneath the Thanos mannerisms.

We’ve seen no footage for Age of Ultron, and yet this sole image has me already clamoring for Avengers 3 intel.

Just three quick shots of Incredible Hulk. They really hate that movie, don’t they?

  • Oliver Queen

THIS. MOVIE. WAS. INSANE!!!!!!!! Amazingly entertaining film and very much looking forward to the sequel as well as the DVD/Blu-ray release.

  • Brandon

I loved the gaurdians movie, but came away underwhelmed by thanos. He looked too much mile a cartoon. What was up with the size of his chin too? I know he has a big, knurly looking chin, but they made it too big for the movie. Oh well. I really wished they would have teased his power after the credits instead of that stupid Howard the duck bs. What a waste of time.

    • Brandon

      Like not mile. Stupid autocorrect.

    • Oliver Queen

I also would’ve preferred Thanos to come to Knowwhere and get the Aether from the Collector in the post-credit scene but i did find that scene amusing especially since Seth Green voiced Howard.

  • Rizzy

Guardians>Avengers and I stand by that decision. I didn’t have a clue who they were since I stopped reading comics after the 90′s, but when I heard this film was in development and how big of a role they play in the cosmic universe I was stoked. After Avengers I felt nothing could take the rank as the top, I was wrong, epic film. The whole cast were all stars, especially Pratt and Cooper.

  • bidi

it would be pretty cool if Guardians 2 DIRECTLY led into Avengers 3. like it’s the prequel to the Infinity Stones saga, and the end of Guardians 2 sees them defeated at the hands of Thanos as he completes his Infinity Gauntlet and heads towards Earth. the Guardians then have to recuperate and make their way towards Earth to help the Avengers take on Thanos

  • nom79

I have to see GOTG before I can judge but so far from the one image I’ve seen for the updated Thanos look reminds too much of Power Rangers. Is anyone else with me on this? I was really digging the look when he was first introduced in Avengers. Hopefully the final version looks epic. One of my all time favorite villians in the Marvel Universe! I have Infinity Gauntlet #1 signed……no you cannot have it! IT’S MY PRECIOUS!!!

  • MJ

I really think they need to take a hard look at keeping the Guardians of the Galaxy universe as separate and distinct from the The Avengers universe. Now that I have gotten to know these great GG characters, the last thing I wan’t to see is IM and Thor lending a helping hand in some future GG movie….the logic of seeing Cap 2 where the Earth’s population was nearly destroyed with IM and most of the other Avengers AWOL was logically bothersome enough.

  • vitextreeradar

whoever edited this for marvel should be hired for film work if they haven’t been already. i’ll be watching this video more than once thats for sure
