Richard Linklater's long-awaited "spiritual sequel" to Dazed and Confused, That's What I'm Talking About, recently wrapped filming, but it turns out the movie relates to more than one feature in the director's filmography.  As we previously reported, That's What I'm Talking About, takes place over the course of a single weekend in the 1980s and revolves around a college freshman and pitcher for the baseball team.  The "spiritual sequel" part of the title meant that the movie was in the same vein as Dazed and Confused, and while it does pick up four years after Linklater's 1993 picture, it doesn't directly relate to that film's characters.

However, if the thought of a character going off to college sounds familiar, that's because it's where Linklater's latest film Boyhood ends, and the director sees That's What I'm Talking About as a continuation of his most recent film.  Hit the jump for the director's explanation.

Speaking to Creative Screenwriting [via The Film Stage], Linklater explained how That's What I'm Talking About relates to his previous films:

Well, I think the word “spiritual” gets me off the hook. I just shot it and wrapped it recently, and it has nothing to do with Dazed and Confused other than it would be set four years later, when one of the younger characters went off to college. It’s a party film. It’s really about the beginning of school, not the end of the school year. I guess personally or autobiographically it’s kind of in that realm, but it’s also a continuation of Boyhood, believe it or not. I don’t know if one film can be a sequel to two different movies, but it begins right where Boyhood ends with a guy showing up at college and meeting his new roommates and a girl. It overlaps with the end of Boyhood.

With Linklater, a movie can absolutely be the continuation of two completely different films.  He's a director who loves observing the passage of time, not just in regards to Boyhood, but with the Before Trilogy as well.

The film is set to open in the fall (a TIFF premiere, perhaps?) and stars Blake Jenner, Ryan Guzman, Tyler Hoechlin, Wyatt Russell, and Zoey Deutch.
