Good news, comrades: FX has renewed its Cold War drama The Americans for a fourth season. Given that the series has continued to get better with each passing season, I can’t even imagine how even more fantastic the show might be by this time next year.
The series will return with another 13-episode season next year, with its principle cast all on board as well (of course — and they being Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, and Noah Emmerich). Though The Americans has been largely snubbed when it comes to major awards, those who know good TV love it — FX reports the show is currently the #1 ranked TV series on Metacritic. For those of you who have been following along this season, you know why.
Nick Grad, President of Original Programming for FX said of the renewal,
Remarkably, this season of The Americans has achieved even greater acclaim than that of its first two seasons. The series has cemented it status with critics as television’s best current drama and arguably the best show on TV, and we couldn’t agree more. That universal critical praise is a tribute to the talents of Joe, Joel, Keri, Matthew, Noah and the entire cast and crew. We look forward to the final four episodes of season three, and beyond, in Philip and Elizabeth Jennings’ riveting journey.
Bonus: In a press release for the news, FX also has given a synopsis for the next episode, “Stingers,” airing April 1st at 10 p.m:
Philip and Elizabeth deploy a plan for the C.I.A.’s Mujahideen visitors. Tensions at the Jennings’ home escalate. Written by Joel Fields & Joe Weisberg; directed by Larysa Kondracki.
The third season of The Americans will conclude April 22nd. I have no idea what the end game for the show will look like, either in this season or in the future, but every week’s intense — and occasionally emotionally harrowing — hour provides for great drama. (And as is always mentioned, the show’s exploration of identity and the nuances of marriage are unparalleled). Plus, any anxiety over these final episodes this season are perhaps now alleviated (maybe), thanks to this news that it is not the end of the Jennings’ story. Spasibo, FX.
The Americans airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
