The first trailer for the horror film The Apparition has arrived.  The trailer begins by explaining that ghosts only exist because we believe in them, then shows a group of scientists who test said theory by trying to conjure a ghost themselves.  They apparently succeed, but I’m confused as to how the film is supposed to be scary when we’re told up front that everything is a product of the characters’ imagination.  The trailer shows a physical presence disturbing the characters, but this seems to be a misapplication of the “science” that the film is supposedly using to ground the film in reality.  The pic mixes traditional narrative with found footage (oh boy!), and I really can’t say this trailer did anything for me.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan, and Tom FeltonThe Apparition opens on August 24th. [Update: We've added the film's poster after the jump as well]

Here’s the synopsis for The Apparition:

When frightening events start to occur in their home, young couple Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural (Tom Felton), but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force…

  1. Wow I have never seen a trailer with a spooky hands final scare! Where do they come up with these original ideas!?!?!

  2. “It’s like a virus, it knows you’re afraid…”

Because viruses are sentient and can sense fear I guess? Ok, yeah, those two phrases are probably cut together from different parts of the movie, but still, I laffed derisively.

  3. Admittedly, the bedsheets wrapping around Ashley Greene were unexpected but the last part of the trailer with the ghost coming out of the washing machine seemed like a direct reference to Ju-On.

  4. I think it looks quite good, but then i’ve been stung by decent looking trailers of crappy movies before.
Does look very Ju-On/Grudge with a hint of Poltergeist & Paranormal Activity thrown in to the mix.May catch this one though.
