To the surprise of no one, Joss Whedon's The Avengers will be shot in 3D.  I suppose that's a step up from Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, which are being post-converted into 3D.  But does the story of any of these movies demand 3D?  Avatar changed moviemaking, but Cameron used the 3D to convey the other-worldliness of Pandora.  It served a narrative purpose.  I know it's old-hat at this point to be curmudgeonly about 3D, but I'm still fed-up with the process.  Ticket prices are going to go be higher when the film hits theaters on May 4, 2012 than they are now.  And Marvel is adding on the "premium 3D" experience.  I'll admit there have been good 3D movies.  But none of them have been worth the extra cash for the 3D experience.

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo.  Filming is set to begin in February. [Showbiz 411]
