New Deleted Scenes from THE AVENGERS and an Alternate Ending for IRON MAN 2 [Updated with Shawarma Featurette]

     April 4, 2013

Marvel finally released the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One box set earlier this week, and included in the collection is a bounty of extras from the studio’s past and future films.  We’ve already shared a collection of images, video, and concept art for a few of the Phase Two films, and today quite a few deleted scenes from The Avengers and Iron Man 2 have surfaced online.  The Avengers scenes are minor bits and pieces that were nipped out of the finished film, but the Iron Man 2 footage is fascinating because it reveals an alternate ending for the film that involves Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash kidnapping Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper.  It’s rather anticlimactic and it’s not hard to see why Jon Favreau went back and reshot the ending that now concludes the final iteration of the film.

Hit the jump to watch the deleted scenes from The Avengers and the alternate ending for Iron Man 2. [Update: We've added the "And Then Shawarma After" featurette after the jump, which takes a brief look behind the scenes of the Avengers tag.]

Anticlimactic doesn’t even begin to cover that. Jesus, it’s just plain awkward.

    • LOL

That cop/waitress story is hilarious… if Whedon is such a great writer, why would he even write this/shoot it in the first place? He already has 9 or 10 characters to juggle screen time with, so hey — let’s throw in a completely useless waitress subplot, too!

      • Ruprect

Careful there friend, your complete ignorance about the screenwriting and fimmaking process is showing.

      • Nebula

He isn’t, you’ve just been convinced that he is by the mindless throng of sweaty Whedonites who wouldn’t know good writing if it bit them in the face. He’s capable of mustering snappy patter, I’ll give him that but that’s about the extent of his abilities as a writer.

Just look at the Avengers, everything from Loki’s staff needing to make with a human chest in exactly the same spot as where Tony Stark has his arc reactor to the Chitauri being remote controlled robots to mind-controlled Erik Selvig creating a safety in the portal machine to Loki illogically wanting to be caught for no reason at all to Loki going to Germany just so that Captain America can have something to say about Germany to a floating fortress apparently being taken down for the first time ever and it being done by a USB virus arrow.

You won’t find that kind of shit writing in a Shane Black script I can assure you.

      • Um, Sure

I’m far from being a Whedonite. But going into a rant about what did not work in the script for Avengers just comes across as bitter fanboy rage. I’m one of the countless people who loved the Avengers even though I have zero investment in either Joss Whedon on Marvel. Every single one of those “complaints” are invalid. They made perfect sense in the context of the story. And for the above comment criticizing Whedon for having the waitress in the script? It’s laughable that anyone would choose to question why a subplot that was cut from the film was cut from the film.

I think I prefer the IM2 alt. ending it just feels like it has a lot more tension in it. Something the movie lacked.

  • TheAvengersSucked

The Avengers just keeps getting worse and worse.

You mean like Dark Knight Rises….CRAP!!!

I think it’s extremely rude for you to post this knowing it was on the bonus disc of the Phase 1 Briefcase. Some people paid a lot of money for that content and you’re giving it away for free. So I guess you’re a bootlegger. And you know Marvel will take it down. Please don’t do again. Thanks! Disrespectful Adam

    • Nerdgasm

You’re an idiot. The reason for the price on discs have nothing to do with Alt scenes or extras. Just like when you pay for cable you get On Demand for free based upon your package. WHen buying a DVD you pay for packaging and movie – the only time they can rise the price of the DVD is if it’s longer than an average movie (This is never used), If it comes with PHYSICAL extras (Like figurines or books.) or if it exceeds a certain disc number (For movies i think its 4 if they are all for the same movie.)…go away. Stop slamming collider for something they are allowed to do.

I actually love ths site & Adams posts. Just not this one.

Oh Brandon, don’t feel stupid for paying all that money, I mean it probably was a good idea at the time.

No, you know what is extremely rude, releasing blu-rays of your movies but then holding half the special features back so that you can use it to cash-in on a 10 disc collection two years later. I bought the Avengers blu-ray, the highest grossing film of 2012 (thanks in part to me) and what do I get? A disc with the movie and two special features, they didn’t even include a director’s commentary because they were too busy trying to get it out the door so that they could start production in this suitcase boxset.

      • Nerdgasm

My Blu Ray has a Directors commentary on it. Whedon pretty much makes fun of his own writing through out the entire thing. It’s pretty entertaining.

  • Marvel Fan

However, some of us already owned all 6 of the movies on Blu-Ray and DVD and didnt want to pay $100+ to see deleted scenes. We appreciate the video since we have and will continue to support Marvel.

Wouldn’t have minded if they kept that “cap saves family” scene in the final cut. I like the contrast of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, trying to take down the big bads, while old shieldy works overtime trying to look after the peeps. Seems that’s what Whedon was going for, but it got a little lost with everything that was going on

That IM2 ending was horrible. Also, I like how the just threw in Iron Man being able to just step in and out of the armor at will. That would haven’t completed destroyed a plot point in the Avengers and what I think is going to be a major plot point in IM3.

I hope that all those newly released deleted scenes get included in future Blu-ray re-releases of Iron Man 2 and a future Blu-ray re-release of The Avengers!
