Is the Cast of THE AVENGERS Shooting Another Scene Tonight? [Update: Mark Ruffalo Confirms Extra Shoot; Scene Will Be in Theatrical Release]

     April 12, 2012

It’s officially The Avengers day here on Collider, again.  We’ve already brought you Twitter reactions to the film’s premiere last night, 20 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage, a press conference interview with more than half the cast, and Steve’s interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige that’s chock full of information on every single upcoming Marvel project.  Now it’s time to focus on a curious bit of information that came out of said press conference.  Our correspondent Christina Radish was in attendance, and right before the press conference ended. Robert Downey Jr. dropped this little nugget: “We are shooting one more scene.  Tonight.  Not kidding.” [Update: Mark Ruffalo has confirmed Downey Jr.'s comment. Hit the jump for more.]

the-avengers-tony-stark-robert-downey-jr-imageWhen Downey stated that they were shooting another scene tonight the crowd laughed it off as another one of the actor’s famous quips, but once the laughter died down Downey added the “not kidding” part.  When asked about Downey’s comments at the second press conference, director Joss Whedon said they weren’t true.  However, if he were really filming a secret scene tonight, I highly doubt that Whedon would confirm it (secrets are supposed to stay secret!).

It’s unlikely that they’re actually shooting another scene for The Avengers, given that the film is completely finished (tag and all).  When Steve sat down with Feige earlier today, the Marvel President revealed that Iron Man 3 starts shooting in five weeks and Thor 2 stars filming in three months, so it’s entirely possible that they’re filming a scene for one or both of these movies.  It’s also possible that Downey was, in fact, kidding.  He has a very dry sense of humor, so I wouldn’t put this kind of gag past him.  If he’s not kidding, I’m willing to be that the scene in question will be incorporated somehow into Iron Man 3.

The premiere for The Avengers is most likely the last time all the involved actors will be in the same place until The Avengers 2 (let’s face it, a sequel’s all but guaranteed).  Given how incredibly busy all these actors are, it would be wise to take advantage of the opportunity and shoot a quick scene that involves most or all of The Avengers cast while everyone’s together.  There’s no confirmation one way or another, but it’d be neat to see The Avengers together again in either Iron Man 3 or Thor 2, or more likely as a tag at the end of either film (maybe both?).  Speculate away, commenters!

Update: The Playlist confirmed the extra scene with Ruffalo at the press conference as follows:

“We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, ‘Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.’ ” Ruffalo said. We asked if it will be in the “The Avengers” when it hits theaters Ruffalo added, “Yeah. So I’m like, ‘All right, when are we doing that?’ Today after we’re done.”

They could be shooting an Avengers Super Cafe scene…with Supes and Bats guest starring.

    Damn. I can only hope.

If they are actually shooting something, wouldn’t it make more sense that it’s one of the teasers for the next film that plays after the credits? Like they’ve done with pretty much all the movie so far. That seems much more likely to me, considering it sounds like they’ve just got Iron Man 3 and Thor 2′s scripts probably finished or worked out enough that they can finally start shooting.

There was already a scene at the end of the credits. The people at the premier have confirmed this.

I can’t wait till this Avengers fiasco is over with. ehhhhh

i know you agree Adam. SAY IT!

  • Deepak

It’s probably the obligatory post-credits scene, and they purposely shot it after the press screening to avoid leaks.

  • zillabeast

Absoultely. Extended secret scene or alternate ending scene would rock.

    • Jesus

Does that really make sense to you? You don’t have to FILM something after the press screening to make sure it’s not included on that one specific print. You just have to not include the scene.

Yeah, Its gotta be a post credit scene, Usually these setup the next movie.

  • dexvrusp

…except the article CLEARLY states that the post-credits or “tag” scene is already done. At least that’s the impression I got from when I actually read this article…/snark

  • Richard

Yeah i agree with has to be part of the next two movies coming up either a scene from Iron Man 3 or Thor 2. I most likely doubt is going to be part of The Avengers.

  • Jesus

Doubtful that it’s a combined shot of every character – they only have contracts for a certain number of films and so it would be bad business sense for Marvel to use up one of the feature appearances of all the actors in a single scene for a movie they won’t be in for the entire duration. With Jackson, Gregg, Smulders, Johansson that makes sense, but not with the main heroes. That’s just too expensive for whimsy.

  • Steve

They’re shooting the new ending for Mass Effect 3.

  • Rockslide

I imagine that there was a good enough reaction to the premiere that 5 execs walked out and said, “You know what would have been great…” An hour later, everyone is in costume and they are filming a quick extra joke or two to throw back into a scene.

Confirming there is a second tag end after all the credits roll (all the publicists, etc.) and just before the screen goes completely dark, etc. Think Ferris. It is not a teaser. Just candy.
