Director Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers doesn’t open stateside until next weekend, but the film debuted this past week in a number of international markets and it’s already taken in nearly $200 million.  In other words, Disney and Marvel are in for a very good May.  The pic totaled $178.4 million as it opened in 39 territories, breaking records for the largest opening weekend in Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.  In the UK it took the title of the biggest opening for a superhero film with a $24.7 million debut, and earned $19.7 million in Australia for the country’s second highest opening ever.  Hit the jump for more.

the-avengers-captain-america-chris-evans-imageMany films nowadays are made with great consideration taken into account for their international appeal, given that studios make a large amount of their money off of foreign grosses.  These blockbuster numbers show that the all-star superhero pic has an incredibly wide appeal, and the movie hasn’t even opened yet in China or Russia—two major territories.

Though it may seem frustrating to some that the film is opening early across the globe with the U.S. left to sit and wait, more and more studios are experimenting with this “early release” technique.  Universal’s Battleship has been open in some territories for nearly a month and doesn’t hit domestic screens until May 18th.  Movies filled to the brim with eye candy in lieu of more dramatic or character moments have a broader appeal across the globe (explosions are truly the same in any language).

With the pic poised to do as much as $150 million in its opening weekend here in the U.S. (on top of stellar reviews), The Avengers looks to be a monster hit across the board.  For many, the wait for this movie has been long and torturous, but in mere days it will—hopefully—all have been worth it.

    • Completely agree! I’ve seen it twice and want to see it again this week. By far my favorite superhero film – yes, even better (more fun) than Dark Knight. I hope it breaks all records! Keep Joss Whedon doing Marvel movies!

      • I ABSOLUTELY concur with both u guys! I saw it in 3D & felt I’d enjoy it more in 2D…So will be going for it again in 2D! :D

  1. A great summer blockbuster for once! Was worth every penny! I would love to see what Joss Whedon could make of the Justice League! (rebooting all the DC heroes for it of course)

ps, for those not seen it yet, stay through the credits….

    *** SPOILER****

For those that stayed for the credits, can anyone tell me who was that red faced fella was on that asteroid? My friend said maybe a skrull, but i thought maybe it was Red Skull from the end of Cap America when he got beamed up to asgard?

  2. It is an epic film one of the best superhero films ever made it is worth the wait for anyone who has yet to see it, it has also the best Hulk and Iron Man is fun in it too again but everybody has there moments in the lime light from a breath taking beggining it never lets up until an epic post credit sequence enough said SEE IT

  3. “Though it may seem frustrating to some that the film is opening early across the globe with the U.S.” – Ha ha ha, that made me lough. I am from Europe and we have to wait aaaaaaall the time. Taste your own medicine USA ;)

      • Well, it is made in America, but it is not for America. Its for movie goers around the world. Stop being selfish.

    • As long as the movie is the same, I don’t care when it’ll be released. It is not like I’ll be going on the first week anyway. Probably will see it on the third or fourth week when the theater is not jam packed.

  4. An oprning weekend of $150 million? No. Its actually projected to do better than that. Projections show the movie is on track to surpass the Hunger Games, so it will take in closer to $200 million. Which isn’t surprising given what this movie is.

    • The Hunger Games made around $155 million opening weekend. If the Avengers are on track to surpass then it is north of $150 million. If you had said its gonna pass HP7.2 than yea maybe you could say $200 million.

  5. $150 million opening weekend would be a very disappointing number! It will certainly make more than the Hunger Games and will threaten the Deathly Hollows… and due to the good reviews I’m seeing, it has a very good shot at the 3 slot fall time worldwide chart.

  6. Am i the only one that didn’t like it? Not being a troll or hater but the film had many story flaws. Good job on managing all the characters in a single film but the plot wasn’t very good. There was no tension as an audience member (even though everyone knows the ending will be positive), and no genuine care for some of the characters (probably because they’re not put in a vulnerable situation).I still think Iron Man is the best out of the bunch.

    • Agreed, some good action scenes, but very weak story and cheap jokes. It’s more like Avengers: Ironman & His Friends.

    • You’re not the only one, but you’re definitely in the minority. Even the critics LOVE this movie (96% Rotten Tomatoes). :-/

    • Yes, you and your mate Nash are indeed the only two fucktards who didn’t like it. Every body else on the the planet including those who have not seen it yet think it is one of the all time great cinematic blockbuster miracles, pulling off something like this is extraordinary.

Very funny, amazing action, great dialogue. Everybody else on the planet also thought that the HULK stole the show, but saying that, every character did their bit and did it amazingly well.

So, to sum up. You like to get attention by being ‘unique and different and having contrary opinions’ but in reality you actually get attention because of the massive penis that flops around from your forehead.

    • Agree, I add there’s still nothing visually groundbreaking. I wish it was longer or a different plot so they could have spent less time to build the team and visit Asgard or even space to fight the aliens. Fighting Mangog and T—-S, now it’s worth 96% on RT.

  7. Watched it yesterday and loved it. Highlights for me were Iron Man and Hulk. With all the superheroes included it could have been a mess of a film but it’s really good.

  8. I can’t understand why numbers for India are constantly ignored. The movie released on 27th April out here (I went for it 1st day 1st show). It released in 4 languages- English, Hindi, Telegu & Tamil. We got a population of 1 billion+. Yet, the Indian BO numbers are still ignored.

Sorry if I come off rude, but I’d just personally like to know what the Indian numbers are cos I got absolutely no idea. Even sites like BoxOfficeMojo.com can be very unreliable for the same.

  9. Saw it while vacationing in Singapore. As far as Team Superhero Movie is concerned, this is the best. The dynamics between the head strong personalities – the movie does a make appoint this is basically Gods bickering among themselves – is what makes this movie work. The action is good to very good. Any scene with Hawkeye & Hulk is lotsa fun, fun, fun. Hulk character redeems himself after the lackluster showings in Ang Lee’s over-serious take, and the so-so Norton’s version. Hulk steals the show this time. And of course, Tony Stark has all the best lines. This movie is gonna be huge.
