Jeremy Renner Near Deal to Play Hawkeye in THE AVENGERS

When it comes to Marvel casting this week, we’re getting incrementally closer to the real thing.  The Josh Holloway item was just a rumor.  Neil McDonough is “in talks” to play Dum Dum Dugan.  But Jeremy Renner has been talking to Marvel about playing Clint Barton for some time, and now the actor is in “final negotiations” to join The Avengers as Hawkeye.

Renner’s star rose considerably over the last year after his Oscar-nominated turn in The Hurt Locker,  which opened up such opportunities as Peter Berg’s adaptation of Battleship and Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled opus on religion.  Renner seems to have passed on Battleship, and the Anderson film could take awhile to come together, so the actor remains a free agent ready to don Hawkeye’s purple bow.  More after the jump:

hawkeye_comic_imageThe ensemble cast required for The Avengers, which Joss Whedon (Firefly) will direct, is approaching completion.  There’s Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man (of course), Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johanssen as Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.  (Of course, the big missing piece is Hulk — no deal has been made with Edward Norton to reprise his role from 2008′s The Incredible Hulk.)  Heat Vision reports that, to keep the budget under control, Marvel has talked all the featured players into a paycut.

This is all shaping up pretty fantastically.  Renner is a great get, and if there is any legitimacy to the Josh Holloway rumor (as Ant-Man, perhaps?)… I would apparently be at a loss for words.

For those unfamiliar with the character, here’s a short bio:

Clint Barton was an orphan, and ran away from the orphanage as a pre-teen to join the circus as a carnival performer, where he was trained in the use of the bow and arrow by the Swordsman and Trickshot. When he discovered that his mentors were both criminals he rejected them, leading to a beating by Swordsman which left Barton badly injured and hospitalized. Years later, he saw Iron Man in action, and was inspired and decided to become a costumed hero called Hawkeye.

Please don't do this. Jeremy Renner looks like a middle-aged lesbian. Why can't they cast someone hot like Josh Holloway (who's got personality and charisma to spare)?

  2. jg @

That is funny – I never thought about it, but middle aged lesbian pretty well pegs it. That said, I'm fine with this. Truth be told, having Renner as Ant Man (and why do we need ant man again? Seriously, why not Quicksilver?) and Holloway as Hawkeye would also be fine. Just don't slap that ridiculous purple mask and dress on him or the whole cross pre-op at mardi gras image will be all too complete.

Iron Man was great on its own ,but I'm afraid if you put all these guys together in one movie it's going to be very strange and very unbelievable, I hope I'm wrong but the vibe aint good for the Avengers movie…….

Looks like we're going back to the dumb-looking suits huh…
    These character shouldn't become live-action… it's embarrassing…

  6. Emmapants @

Renner's alright, but I was getting a bit excited at the prospect of Holloway as Clint Barton. Also, they need someone quippy which reads much more like Holloway to me than Renner, but we'll see.

Where is Nathan Fillion?!?!?! HE should be Hawkeye!

  8. vonDutch @

Ant-Man is needed if they want to use Ultron or even Vision for some time.

  9. Kelly @

Last I heard Nathan Fillion was in the running for Ant-Man.

  10. Grey @

Holloway as Hawkeye? Heck no! I would take Renner over Holloway any day! Holloway has the intensity of a My Little Pony toy!

I was not very confident about Avengers either until I just saw Joss Whedon as director. His attention to genre detail could just pull it out. Although I am still nervous about casting. Hawkeye and Captain America were always drawn as from the Square Jawed Blue Eyed Cowboy Hero mold.
And I sure hope that Hemsworth can shave before shooting for Thor begins!

on dat first pic… thats bullseye… not hawkeye -__-

My Hawkeye hopes are dead. It's tiresome how Marvel just seems to court in actors for whatever role they can get them, it's rather pathetic, it's like begging some one to come to your party when your guest would rather you invite some one fun.
Not to mention how off all the Ant Man rumors are, Owen Wilson would fit better than anything I heard, it's like their going for sexy guys over the geeks who actually become superheros.
Also Renner doesn't seem to even have a good attitude twords the character, and the picture your using is of BULLSEYE, masquerading as Hawkeye during Dark Reign, not of Clint Barton.

    Thor has finished filming already.

Perfect Casting, im loving how this movie is coming together

oh wow — someone lives in bizarro world.

so much spam — what's with that..?

  18. NightAvatar @

He won't shave for Thor because they are going for this look for Thor in the film.

  19. Faustapp @

You mean their actually thinking of using a actor who looks like he could be a scientist to play… a scientist? Thanks for making my sunday brighter :)

  20. Faustapp @

Why are you commenting on comic book films if that's your attitude. These character only look goofy when you try to make them look 'real'.
Trust me, if these costumes would look good translated to film then they would of been selling millions of comics, toys, video games, posters, records, t shirts, tattoos, being painted on military planes, theme parks, etc. etc. etc.
So you go play with the worms in the garden, or go watch the X-Men movies because they has realistic (i.e. boring, banal, trite, uninspired, lazy) costumes, and let us finally have the fun of seeing superheroes on the big screen, and not bastardizations.

  21. peten @

If I was going to get trained in the use of the bow and arrow, I think I'd want to be trained by “The Bow-and-arrowsman”. I'm just saying.

  22. Emmapants @

I couldn't possibly see Owen Wilson as Hank Pym. Yes, he's a scientist, but he's also got some serious anger management issues, and was always, as far as I'm concerned, one of the more conventional looking guys in the Avengers. (Not that most of them aren't conventional looking.) Scientist yes, but not a geek like Reed Richards. And Owen Wilson isn't particularly geeky, besides.

THAT'S what was bugging me about that picture! I kept trying to figure out where it was from and why Hawkeye was looking so skanky.

  23. DamageIncM @

Hm, no, there's a difference between something looking right and plain stupid.
I saw the 'Captain America'-one too, they tried to all “toughen it up”, but I don't like it that much either.
It's like they kind of went back to the “dumb looks” as in… early '90s or decades earlier perhaps.

And I was just referring to the couple of announcements of comic-movies we just got, not EVERYTHING.
Don't give me that attitude yourself please, I'm not a hater.
I'm more of a… “disliker” (at the moment)… this here is to give my opinion isn't it?
I don't rip on everything I see, I give my honest opinions.

Oh, and yes, my comment could have come across in a bad way.
But to be honest, I was already tired after seeing 'Captain America' and 'Thor', and now this one.

Well, guess I can only HOPE it comes across better in the movies…

Also afraid to see what the Mandarin-character, who would supposedly appear in 'Iron Man 3', would be like.
    Love Whiplash in “2″ though… but it's a different story…

  24. Ringbearer1420 @

Owen Wilson is better than any actor, asid from Edward Norton, Marvel's yet to use. He's perfect, he's the type of retro looking person I want to see in these, instead all these movies look like smallville with a better budget.

  25. Emmapants @

It's nothing against Owen Wilson, I think he's great, but I don't see him as retro looking, and he just doesn't read right, especially for as unlikeable a guy as Antman. I mean, they're superheroes, they're not the most diverse looking bunch. Particularly the Avengers, who were all rather jawtastic.

See Ed Norton worked cause Bruce Banner is not supposed to be particularly muscular or the like. He's a real dude who then turns into the Hulk. The other guys, even the more regular ones, are thorough gym-goers.

  26. notacow @

We need Ant-man and Wasp because they were original members!!!
