First Trailer for THE AVENGERS

by     Posted 2 years, 190 days ago

The first trailer for writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is now available online. Quick impression: I really like what I see. The plot is simple and to the point: Loki wants to destroy the Earth, and Nick Fury puts a team of superheroes together to stop him. While this may be a “team”, the star of the trailer (and perhaps the movie; we’ll see) is Robert Downey Jr. He gets both the laugh lines and the bad-ass lines. I don’t think anyone else talks except for Loki, Nick Fury, and Captain America. The only thing that’s awful is the music that plays in the second half of the trailer, but that’s no fault of the movie.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, and Cobie Smulders. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th, 2012.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Avengers:

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

Any link for this that doesn’t require Apple’s Quicktime garbage?

    • joe mama

Maybe its your computer thats garbage? Its a simple QT plug-in for goodness sake. Go troll somewhere else!

      Awesome trailer!

      • slinky317

@joe mama, that’s exactly my point. There’s no need for a “simple QT plugin” when Flash and HTML5 work perfectly fine.

      • Tarek

        Same here. QT is garbage.

      • Mike

I have the QT plug in and I still agree it’s annoying.

    • Disnywhite

You, and all the other idiots complaining about the quick time plug in. Go jump off the roof of the building you work in. I can’t believe that a grown adult is acting like such a loser. Why can’t people like you just fall down dead where you stand? You’re totally and indisputably worthless. It’s a MOVIE, you twat. Get a real computer. You all deserve to be thrown in a mass grave along with your comics. Go to hell.

      • Tarek

How old are you disney ? Seriously ? ^^

      • T. Van

The fact that you posted such a hostile message while having a wholesome name/handle is downright hilarious. Please know that this is not a criticism… but a compliment on what I *suspect* was meant to be ironic.

That said, this trailer was great!

      • Tarek

disnywhite is what is commonly referred to as a TROLL.
He is posting everywhere. Even on Cher’s facebook.

      • T. Van

        @ Tarek
        LOL. “Cher’s Facebook.”

Still… how can you get mad at Disnywhite? DW’s rant reminds me of that SNL skit where Jim Belushi portrayed a short-tempered Captain Kangaroo in the midst of competing on $25,000 Pyramid…

  • Lorraine Carano

Woooo! The Avengers will be the biggest movie ever! Watch out Avatar!

    • Adam

I would say that it will be the highest Marvel movie ever, watch out Spider-Man. It might reach The Dark Knight. But, I doubt Titanic or Avatar are going to be within its grasp.

      • Scottie

Without the 3D surcharge, this movie has no chance of getting close to the other films, including The Dark Knight. Will it reach $400 million? Absolutely. $500 million? Probably not because it won’t have the repeat-viewing power of The Dark Knight since TDK was neo-noir and there was something new every time you watch it. Of course, this is just speculation and Avengers maybe something Whedon isn’t showing us on purpose. I trust Joss a ton, being a huge fan of Firefly and Serenity. But without 3D, this film has no shot of Titanic or Avatar. Plus, those films had Oscars written all over them, this does not. The Dark Knight Rises, if on par with TDK, will be an Oscar contender as well, and just may be the first-ever superhero film to win Best Picture.

      • Cali Kid

There’s no way this movie reaches $400 million! What are you smokin?

      • IllusionOfLife

Captain America and Thor have each made roughly $400 million, and Iron Man 2 topped $600 million. It’s a safe bet that The Avengers will make at least $600 million, if not more based on the set precedent.

Plus, it is in 3D (just shoddy, post-converted 3D nonsense) so it’ll be getting at least a little boost from that.

      • Cali Kid

Those numbers may be correct Worldwide but it won’t touch $400 million here in the states.

      • Brenno

lettuce be real tea, this movie will fetch around a billion. So $400 mil domestic is a given. Gnome what im sayain?

      • Scottie

I was definitely talking about domestic gross. There is a good chance it will pass The Dark Knight and hit well over a billion dollars worldwide. Since there are so many different Marvel superheros in this film, there is a better chance that people in international markets will go see their specific favorite hero, and not just an ensemble. Whereas Batman is somewhat polarizing in that it’s just one hero instead of being able to pick which hero you want to see in The Avengers.

        Early Prediction:
        $420 million domestic
        $1.2 billion worldwide

I hope this doesn’t turn out to be Iron Man 3.1

  • Joey

    Looks damn cool!!!

  • Michael

Here’s the YouTube link for it….

  • Rukia

    Agree on the awful music.

    • reut

awful music? That is Nine Inch Nails my friend. Clean out your ear holes.

      • Kevin

What in the hell are you talking about, awful music? It’s one of the best songs from one of the albums ever! Sorry it doesn’t use the same Smashmouth or every 90′s pop song that is used in every other trailer. You need to learn what good music really is.

So far looks great. All indications show Joss Whedon is not only pulling it off, but his brand of storytelling is a great match. This is the most excited I’ve ever been for a superhero movie. Good job Marvel. :)

  • Sugreev2001

    So damn AWESOME !!!
    *skeet skeet skeet

  • billyjean

can anyone confirm this? STEVE! has there been news if the aspect ratio will be indeed be 1:85:1? the trailer has it.

kind of a downer specially when this is what’s supposed to be the greatest superhero movie of all time(atleast what marvel wants it to be. i mean come on JOSS, why can’t you go CINEMASCOPE!

  • A.

looks good so far….not sold a 100% on Joss Whendon directing, the guys is good but tends to get real silly real fast. thankfully he has 50+ worth of refrence to go back on.

    • A.

      meant to say 50+ years

  • Tarek

I just hope that there will be a scene where Iron Man will fight against Captain America.

    • epitaz

There will……in the Civil War movie

  • sense 11

That works for me. Awesome visuals

Looks like that leg thing is Black Widow’s favorite move. That’s a great time to be an extra/stunt double.

    • T. Van

      @ LB

That “leg thing” would be the Hurricanrana, no?

  • JLC

Looks like they’ll spend the first half of the movie fighting among themselves. Excellent, just as it should be. Summer 2012 is shaping up nicely.

  • Trent Reznor

Awful music? You must be crazy! Nine Inch Nails freaking rocks and any trailer including it’s music makes me want to see it. Take Terminator Salvation, that trailer was awesome! The move didn’t turn out very good, but the trailer was amazing.

I’ve always stated that a trailer is an instant success if Trent Reznor is involved with the music.

    • Totich

Agreed; “We’re In This Together” is, quite possibly, the best possible song for this trailer. I am even MORE pumped for this film now.

This trailer has all kinds of Awesome written all over it. Nuff said!

  • Al

If I had to guess. Thor, Captain America and Iron Man are going to share the load of being the leads of the movie. C.A. because he IS the head of the Avengers (the moral center, the straight man), Thor because they’re facing off against his brother, and Iron Man because Robert Downey Jr. is the film’s biggest star and currently the most popular character. Everyone else will be secondary.

    • Ruprect

I think they are ALL going get at least one moment ( and I am including Gregg and Jackson) where a full on geek-meltdown is the only response possible.

  • Tmo

The only part of this trailer that I dislike is the interaction of Stark and Banner. It really seems kind of forced and doesn’t flow well with the rest of the trailer. Other than that the rest of trailer makes me very, very happy.

    • snapperhead

Really? I guess you’re not a BTVS fan. That “enormous, green, rage monster” line was damn funny. Classic Whedon.

      • Jay

        What’s BTVS?

      • snapperhead

        Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

      • Tmo

I’m no fan boy but BTVS was good. But that part of the trailer just felt tacked on and forced in only to point out that Hulk is in the movie.

  • Ed

Awful Music???? Is Nine Inch Nails = Trent Reznor = Academy Award. You want Bieber, LMFAO or Kid Rock :s

  • Warpcrafter

If the trailer is any indication, the Hulk won’t play any meaningful part until the final set-piece battle. That’s okay, he should be the most difficult part of the team to get with the plan.

    • Enigmatic

You may be right but I have a feeling the hulk is not barely in the trailer because they have not done most their cgi work yet.

  • IllusionOfLife

So why is Paramount’s name on the trailer? Didn’t Disney buy publishing rights to this and Iron Man 3?

Aside from that moment of confusion, this is awesome! May 4th, 2012 can’t come fast enough.

  • adam

this will be a BIG film but BIGGEST? are you guys forgetting THE HOBBIT?

    • Tarek

No coming movie can be bigger than the Hobbit.

Wohoo!! Scarlett Johansson looks like a strong, empowered and sexy Black Widow. I love how she leaps up onto some henchman’s shoulders with her legs wrapped around his face, thrusting him down against the ground. Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait! Man! I feel like a woman!

  • TheBearMormon

Isn’t The Avengers being distributed by Walt Disney, not Paramount? I would fix/update that synopsis.

  • Michael

Just watched this trailer. I’m sold! That last conversation between Stark and Banner got a chuckle out of me. The lines between Captain America and Stark was awesome. I’m so ready to see how the interrogation with Loki is going to go down. That little snippet where we see Loki being escorted by the police to the Avengers’ base really got me pumped. Overall, this and The Dark Knight Rises will be two of the biggest movies of 2012. However, I’m guessing that it’s going to be a draw between Rises and The Hobbit for the best movie of the year.

    • Michael

Just realized I made a typo. I meant to say that The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are going to be close competitors for the best movie of the SUMMER. I apologize in advance to anyone who reads my above comment and gets confused.

  • Eh… Avengers

  • Luckystrike

I bet the first part is them trying to contain the Hulk.

  • Terry

I hate to be a hater on this subject or maybe I’ve been around too effing long but I ain’t feeling this.Sorry.

Looks epic. Nine inch nails we’re in this together now, couldn’t be more perfect for the trailer.

Looks like whedon has been taking lessons from Bay. First 30 seconds all Transformers style including sound effects. then goes cheap and slapstick and then ends with a hulk that looks exactly the same as the last one, even the same green… Not feeling this at all. Not at all.

  • JR209

This looks like a 200 million dollar Power Rangers movie no thanks

  • Bonobo

So so. The full three minute + trailer will give a better indication of what Wheadon is up to, but I do find it troubling that they had no truly beautiful shots to showcase here, just cars going generically boom and canted close-ups – I fear Wheadon might get called out on “small screen sensibilities” when this comes out…

  • Clay

I’m pretty sure if you can’t protect Earth, you won’t be around to avenge it……….

  • Mik

I liked Chris shooting a machine gun in the trailer. Actually the Hulk looks more like the Ang Lee version. I liked the Norton version best. Darker and meaner.

  • Phil

Is ScarJo the Megan Fox of the movie?, she looks really out of place….(music is ok, should of just put the instrumental though)

  • Daniel

RDJ seems stiff. He’s trying, but its not as effortless as in Iron Man.
