When the Academy Awards nominations were announced yesterday, some were a tad surprised to see that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was completely shut out of the race.  The superhero movie that did make the cut, however, is Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, which is nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar.  Industrial Light & Magic has released a video that’s basically a “best of” for the film’s visual effects, and it quickly shows how some of the film’s visual trickery was pulled off.  This is likely the video that was shown to Academy voters when they were considering the contenders in the Best Visual Effects category, and it’s a neat compilation of how some of the film’s more impressive visuals were put together.

Hit the jump to watch the video.  The 85th Academy Awards will be held on February 24th.

“some were a tad surprised to see that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was completely shut out of the race”… maybe delusional nolanite fanboys who still think the adventures of a ninja millionaire dressed as bat qualify as art cinema.

any person who saw more than one movie this year, wasnt expecting any nomination for the convoluted mess that was “the return of the jedi” in Nolan´s overrated trilogy.

“The Dark Knight Rises was completely shut out of the race…” Well, for Best VFX, no surprise there. Most of the action (the Bat flying close to ground done with mount and hydraulics, Batpod, the Pit was a set, airplane hijack was actually filmed) was done in camera – the only significant pieces of CGI were the football stadium being elevated and the Bat flying between buildings at high elevations, where the latter is no different than X-wings flying across the Death Star in Star Wars.

That being said, The Avengers did not deserve this nomination. For the most part, its visuals are derivative- we’ve all seen NYC demolished countless times in disaster, sci-fi, and monster movies. Why not Cloud Atlas? It would be a far more inspired nomination.
