A detailed description and poster for the controversial Mel Gibson/hand-puppet film The Beaver was just released by Summit at AFM (American Film Market). The film stars Mel Gibson as a manic-depressive, who in attempt to quell his inner turmoil, begins to wear a hand beaver puppet. The Beaver, directed by Jodie Foster (Little Man Tate), also features Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Jenifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) and Foster herself in supporting roles.
Currently The Beaver is without a release date, in no small part due to all the controversy surrounding Gibson at the moment. Be warned that the released synopsis seems to give away the entire plot of The Beaver. Hit the jump to check out Mel Gibson’s furry inanimate costar and to read the synopsis.
Walter Black (Mel Gibson) is suffering from extreme depression. As he spends most of his days sleeping or trying different methods of self therapy, his wife Meredith (Jodie Foster) hides behind work and helplessly watches him fall apart; his youngest son Henry (Riley Thomas Stewart) becomes a hermit; his oldest son Porter (Anton Yelchin) writes his classmate’s essays for cash and secretly keeps a list of similarities between him and his father to avoid a similar future; and Walter’s toy company heads toward bankruptcy. Walter soon hits bottom when Meredith kicks him out of the house, and he decides to get drunk and kill himself. The suicide attempt goes awry, and upon waking up, Walter is introduced to “the Beaver” – a beaver puppet he had found in the trash and put on his hand during his drinking binge – who suddenly speaks to him, in a British accent. With the help of the Beaver (a facet of Walter’s personality), Walter gets a new lease on life and returns home. Everything begins to work out wonderfully – he reconnects with Henry through a new hobby in woodworking, the Beaver helps him to woo back Meredith, and the Beaver takes over as CEO and revives the toy company. The only holdout is Porter, who believes Walter has gone crazy and instead continues his list and works on writing a graduation speech for popular cheerleader and valedictorian Norah (Jennifer Lawrence)
Life seems to be getting better for the Black family until the Beaver takes complete control of Walter’s life. He makes a public appearance on national television and eventually drives Meredith and Porter away. Hand puppets explode in popularity and the toy company thrives, but Walter begins to see that his life is no longer his own, especially without his family. When he tries to release himself from the Beaver, he realizes that the Beaver can no longer be controlled. Walter finally takes drastic measures to reclaim his life, and after building a little coffin for the Beaver, he turns the table saw onto himself. Meanwhile, Porter’s own life has fallen apart; his friendship with Norah ends and his essay business is exposed and leads to his college admission getting rescinded. Porter decides to confront Walter, only to find his father in the garage, finally separated from the Beaver. Later, Walter recovers in a psychiatric hospital. Porter shows Walter the beautiful graduation speech he had written for Norah and finally voices his fears about turning into Walter and whether depression and suicide will be inevitable for him one day. Walter believes that Porter will make his own life. Porter, Meredith, and Henry soon welcome Walter home and in return, Walter sees Porter off for his road trip with Norah, leaving Walter at peace with his life and family at last.

Why hasn’t someone shot this SOB yet? I used to think that an actor’s life and work should be kept separate. But then all the stuff that has been going on with him… Yeah, no. If someone is THAT big of an asshole, I want to know about it (See also: Vincent Gallo).
I applaud the cast of The Hangover for saying NO to working with him. I would have expected better of Miss Foster.
Clearly they shot this before his scandal. You can’t blame Jodie Foster.
If you honestly wish death on him for his actions, you’re worse than he is. Mel has problems. But he hasn’t physically brought harm to anyone.
I don’t wish it on him, just honestly surprised it hasn’t happened…
So what exactly are your thoughts on Charlie Sheen as well?
Sure, say no to Mel but let wife-beater and rapist Mike Tyson in the film. I will never again go to a Zach Galifianakis film. He led the charge on this. I admire and respect Ms. Foster for believing in her friends. Sure, Mel needs help and I pray he gets it. I stand by him and Ms. Foster all the way.
you dont htink too much of yoruself do you?
the accusations are allegations who do not have been proved, on th oposite all so call evidences have already been proven to be fausle and fabricatred, and that include the recordings. Its not evne his voice in most of those tapes. this is the digital age, anyhtign is possible wiht a codec and specialy with soemone like Mel gibson who made so many movies and interviews wiht audio track on them..
He is the victim of an extortionist who wasnt working alone and has also been subject to death threats and still is.
As an insider i cna also tell you that he is not the father of Lcia , the baby, and that oksana is not the mother of the baby either.
The child was bought in Romania in what is known by Interpol as “the baby factory” and hunted down by anti human traffiking organisations. Thereofr too the investigation of the case has been very long and is stil not terminated, and involve the FBI and the MCB (Major Crime Bureau) who work agaisnt kidnaping, extortion, human trafiking, children trafiking, organised cirme, death threats, blackmail, extradition, and criminals who have run away.
I suppose tha tit never occured to oyu to look at the news wiht acritical eye and to od your research yoruslef?
Specialy wjhen all reportings by ALL media including CNN, AP, Reuter, and all major newspaper have taken their information directly and without verification of the sources, from Radar online, the worse sh.it gossip outlet after the National Enquier and who is a branch of the NE and owned by the same company, who alos own People magazin. Warner Bros for its part own Eonline and co-own TMZ, adn was also producing “hangover 2″ , hirerig Mle gibson on urpose and begging him ot come, for 3 days before shooting telling him he was fired. Do not beelive all what you read, Zack is today on his knews claiming he never ask for Mel gibson ot dont play in the movie.
There is more into this than meet the weyes but lets hope that it wil soon be over.
sounds like an episode from American Dad
… a good thing
So….you can rape a kid*cough*Polanski. And people still want to work with you. But you can’t yell at someone over the phone. Something that a lot of people do, I’m sure.
I do feel bad for FOSTER. I love LITTLE MAN TATE. She doesn’t do much so I always look forward to her work. Infront or behind the camera. Hopefully it gets a proper release.
wow i just watched the entire movie with this synopsis , terrible job
Is this movie based on a true story of Mel Gibson cause it should be!
No wonder Jodie Foster came to the defense of that evil religious hypocrite ‘Moral Mel’. Her reputation as a director hangs on the financial success of her latest movie. Shave on you Jodie, shame on you! Why don’t they just title this piece of tripe: “Men Who Abuse Woman, & The Lesbians Who Love Them”!
They do share some things in common: They both cheated on their wives and divorce is the result!
