I'm still trying to remain on the positive tip for The Blob remake that's percolating out there, but it can be hard when you love a movie as much as I love Chuck Russell's 1988 version of The Blob (which makes me a hypocrite since that is also very much a remake). That movie was so perfect I'm not sure I see any room for improvement. But helmer Simon West (who also directed Expendables 2 and the upcoming Wild Card) has an idea that could at the very least set his film apart for the pack. Though whether it's a good or bad concept of course remains to be seen.

According to West, The Blob remake might not feature much of a Blob. He tells Screen Relish:

"It’s going to be much more sci-fi than the original. It’s a bigger scale type of movie. It’s more Alien meets Predator and designing the creature is a long and involved process cause its very sophisticated. It’s not going to be the goo pouring through windows. So, that’s taking a while to design and construct that.”

It sounds like he's changing the physics of The Blob, which by its very nature would ooze through windows since it's basically a liquid. And the two creatures he name-checks are very much solid, fleshy beings with much more athletic agency that an expanding gelatinous mass. There's a chance I'm totally misreading this, but we'll see soon enough. The Blob remake starts shooting in August. Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten will produce.
