Confirmed: Matt Damon Won’t Appear in THE BOURNE LEGACY; Set for August 2012 Release

The Jason Bourne saga has become an intriguing story both on and off the screen these days. Recently word broke that Universal has selected Tony Gilroy, who penned all three Bourne films, to direct the fourth entry in the popular spy-franchise. However, it is known that Matt Damon would not reprise his role without director Paul Greengrass, who helmed both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Deadline reports that Gilroy, whose directorial debut Michael Clayton was both a critical and box office success, has found a way to extend the franchise without Damon’s involvement. Gilroy will explore the world surrounding Jason Bourne and, presumably, dig deeper into the Treadstone and Blackbriar mythos. While the Bourne character is not expected to return, his presence will be felt throughout the film, setting up a potential return in later films. Hit the jump if you want to find more The Bourne Legacy, which is now scheduled for an August 2012 release.

What’s great about this deal is that Damon is under no obligation to return to the franchise, which has grossed over $900 million worldwide to date. Even better is the notion of Gilroy exploring other assassins in the Bourne mythology — remember Clive Owen’s bitter assassin in The Bourne Identity?

Intriguingly enough, the article goes on to talk about the troubled productions on all three films and why Greengrass was brought on to replace The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman.

Apparently, tensions mounted on the set between producer Frank Marshall and Liman, resulting in his taking on an executive producer role for the subsequent sequels. Greengrass was hired as his replacement, but didn’t get along with Gilroy, who washed his hands of the series after Ultimatum wrapped.

While Greengrass was busy shooting his costly thriller Green Zone (also with Matt Damon), Universal began developing a fourth film. Production issues on the Iraq thriller kept Greengrass away from development on Bourne 4, but Universal continued anyway, which the director more or less took as a sign of disrespect, resulting in his and Damon’s departure from the production.

Gilroy only jumped on board for a fourth film after a meeting with the Ludlow estate resulted in a unique opportunity to branch out with the franchise.

tony_gilroy_imageIn all honesty I had no idea such trouble existed on these productions. All of them were damn near perfect and didn’t give off the sense of behind-the-scenes issues.

However, as a fan of all three films (in a big way mind you), I’m actually quite excited at this new change of events. I felt The Bourne Ultimatum ended exactly as it should have. To bring him back would be like bringing Indiana Jones back for another go-round after having him ride off into the sunset at the end of The Last Crusade; or bringing John McClane out of the ashes to battle bad guys in a fourth Die Hard movie and then jabbing it with a PG-13 rating. And who would be stupid enough to do that?

By expanding the world of the franchise, however, Universal may now take the series in any direction they want. Personally, I think this is a much better idea than recasting the role of Jason Bourne, or going back in time and telling a prequel story. Bourne is not 007 – the character is not bigger than the actor. Matt Damon is Jason Bourne.

That said, I’m skeptical of Gilroy taking the directorial reins, especially after the disappointing Clive Owen/Julia Roberts vehicle Duplicity. Still, he’s 1-1 as far as I’m concerned; maybe a Bourne movie will put him back on top!

Duplicity was pretty terrible. Especially given the talent involved. I’m a huge Greengrass and Damon fan. Hard to picture the series without them. I’m more interested in Greengrass’ next film than anything Gilroy is up to.

Michael Clayton is as good as a thriller can be. it has the same things i love about this year’s The Ghost Writer. both well-written. both well acted. and both well directed. two very good adult films. i wouldn’t underestimate Gilroy.

that said, i haven’t seen Duplicity(and i may never will). but i agree with you, Greengrass is definitely better than Gilroy, but you’ve got to acknowledge the fact that not some hack is stepping on to replace Greengrass at the helm. thank god for that

I agree completely on Clayton. Was great. Duplicity was just such a sadly squandered opportunity. I truly wish for the best with this next Bourne, it just doesn’t hold much interest anymore. By the way, does anyone know what Greengrass IS doing instead of Bourne?

Duplicity was pretty great actually, despite the presence of Julia Roberts. I think it’s problem was the fact that your average movie-goer isn’t really smart enough to follow all the jumping around in time and all the double/triple crosses going on. Watch it again. It rocks.

A Bourne movie without Jason Bourne?? Yeah, cause everytime I saw the other films I went into the theatre thinking “I can’t wait to see what Treadstone is up to!!” No thank you…good day sir.

Both Supremacy and Ultimatum were extensively rewritten by other people, including Greengrass and Damon, and Gilroy is on the record hating all three movies. He refused even to see Ultimatum, apparently, until he was maneuvering to get this gig. Damon won’t come back without Greengrass, in any case. So, if Gilroy is directing, no Damon. And I’ve already seen enough Bourne rip-offs, thanks.

Sorry…I don’t follow – what about this news is “great”?

Sounds cool that Gilroy’s gonna expand the story and bring back Jason Bourne in further installments, I hope it’ll be good as the trilogy, or better than that, and the title should be changed, since it’s not focus on Jason Bourne but a new assassin. Really looking forward to this…:)

no Greengrass, no Damon, no love for more Bourne movies… maybe I’ll check it out once, but the trilogy is perfect as it is…

The truth is the writing was never the strong suit for the trilogy (the best mature action movies of my generation, imho) – the acting talent, direction, cinematography and fight choreography made the earlier movies. it is safe to say that no one involved in this moronic cash grab is excited about anything other than getting a big paycheck. Damon and Greengrass were smart to walk out on a win.

  • Bourned out.

This is the most overrated Franchise EVER. The Bourne Identity received very subpar reviews peopel forget but I thought it was THE best installment of all of them.

Had the installment kept the same spy thriller feel this would be a top notch franchise. Damon is the only reason this movie works at all. The conspiracy moving the plotlines along are hardly anything groundbreaking or even interesting.

The way Greengrass shot the last two installments really drove me nuts. The action shots were erratic and too up close. You could hardly make out any action. The whole way they were shot felt like a gimmick and they took away from the movie, so in my opinion Greengrass gone = a good thing.

I think Damon overstated his importance to this Franchise and now they are going in a new direction. If the movie is really good it could reflect on him badly and I hope it does. I hate when actors attach themselves to a director. TRY SOMETHING NEW!! We do not want to see Bourne run crazy through the city for a convoluted conspiracy that has little or no intensity or interest..

I am sorry changing the lead and Director was the best thing for this franchise.
