First Trailer and Poster for THE BOURNE LEGACY Starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, and Edward Norton

     February 8, 2012

The first trailer and poster for The Bourne Legacy have gone online.  The central message of the trailer is this: Jeremy Renner can kick the shit out of people just as well as Matt Damon. It’s clearly the same Bourne flavor, and audiences will be happy to get another great actor beating up bad guys. The editing moves so fast that it’s tough to tell how much writer-director Tony Gilroy‘s style will differ from Paul Greengrass‘ (who directed Supremacy and Ultimatum), but I’m eager to see what Gilroy has in store.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, Oscar Isaac, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, and Scott GlennThe Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd.

Official synopsis:

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy.  The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.

For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

pretty good cast, action looks slick.

  • Mr. J

i really want this film to be good, however ii reminds me a lot of “U.S. marshals” after “the fugitive”.

  • Traffick

Michael Clayton was masterful. I’m surprised Gilroy hasn’t been offered more directing roles until now. I have faith that this won’t be an unnecessary spin off.

It’s unnecessary for them to include the “Bourne” in the title though. Obviously it’s done for marketing purposes, but Bourne will be absent in this film.

I think it’s very neccessary. The official synopsis says “with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films”. In other words, this film will probably have alot to do with Jason Bourne and his legacy…aka The Bourne Legacy. I think it’s a great title and without it people would have no clue it was part of the Bourne franchise.

The point is, everyone knows what is meant when you say the name Jason Bourne. Legacy in this case meaning handed down or more properly handed off as in a continuation. I always wondered about the other Treadstone agents although in the second movie it was implied that that were all dead. I never thought so and this takes that up. So, I guess this agent was programed right after Bourne or at the same time?

  • beatle4sale

yeah! lets make a Bourne movie with no Jason Bourne sounds awesome. Still could be good though Renner is pretty cool and love Edward Norton

SICK. Looks like the diddly-dog’s bollocks. I hated Greengrass’ nauseating camera movement anyway.

ok this might just be an awesome movie, after all Jeremy acted well in MI4, I wanna see how Gilroy expands the bourne universe, and yes I definitely agree, there was no use of putting Bourne on the title!!

    Great Trailer, nuff said

  • Moviefan

Looks nothing like a Bourne film. Might be good anyways, just a different kind of action movie.

Dang, that looks good! Can I see it now, please?

The real question is…will audiences ever tire of the rogue agent story? Based on the comments above, I suppose we’re not there yet.

  • Haswell

Take it! Take my money, Universal!

  • Faiz

Holy fuckin’ god does this look well-made. I know people were censuring universal for pushin’ this project into production but it seems like this trailer has hinted that the effort will be paid off. Universal has already been in a bind with their paucity of great IPs, so this movie is needed to lift them up…..

Looks so sick, I’m very excited for this. The Bourne Ultimatum was amazing, but I think this sequel/reboot/spinoff will be equally as awesome. Gilroy is a great writer and director and since he wrote the trilogy I think we are in for a surprise treat with this one. Plus, the cast, new and old, is really top notch, very stacked. I hope we get a Chris Cooper cameo, you can hear his voice at the beginning of the trailer but he’s not listed as an official cast member.

  • Farzan

Very good trailer and now I’m officially on board with this film. I’m a big fan of the previous 3 Damon/Greengrass films and I was alittle hesitant when I heard both of them won’t be back for this. Now after reading what Tony Gilroy is doing with this film and seeing this trailer, I’m ready for it.

Matt Damon isn’t getting replaced and he did express interest in returning in the future. This is a nice spin off and would be really exciting to see both Renner and Damon in the next one

  • Haswell

I love what Greengrass brought to the franchise. But the shoulder camera work has evolved into “an attitude.” Do you need gritty, in-the-moment atmosphere in a quiet, contemplative dialogue scenes? I sat in the middle of a theater during the showing of ULTIMATUM and it had become nauseating around the time of the car chase. I hope they keep the hand-held camera work to a minimum.

  • POW

    Jeremy Renner is gay.

  • Sam

Alright! my man Ed Norton is back in big time! anticipating this one just because of him

At least we have an A list cast and a fat a$$ production budget.
Renner is one of my favorite new actors so I’m rooting for him. He’ll do great. The money is in the bag.

  • Ryan

This looks nothing like a Bourne movie! Where’s all the hand to hand combat, the improvised weapons, and most of all the government agents tracking renner down! Oh wait thats all there? Oh sorry I didn’t watch the trailer.

  • Spence

It looks like what we are losing in Matt Damon we are gaining in coherent action sequences. Seems like a good trade off to me.

I’m on board. This worked. The blinds motif worked great. Sure, it’s a bit gimmicky, but someone went an extra mile for the trailer to make sure it stands out and makes the audience pay attention. Makes me think there’s something pretty great in there.

I’m also impressed with Jeremy Renner. To go from his role in Hurt Locker to the very different character in MI4 and pull both off so well shows he has range and skills. Let’s see how Hawkeye vs. Bourne guy goes. :)

  • Aurora Vampiris

Wasn’t “Jason Bourne” a code name anyway?

  • Ash

Why is it that everytime these agencies train some dude into a one man killing machine they turn their backs on them and go AWOL. You’d think they’d learn their lesson by now

  • Arnold

  • Tim

    Wooo, Edward Norton!

    • terry

Speak for yourself! Norton didn’t even do press for his version of Hulk because he wanted to make script changes. They guy is awesome but he can be a child. I heard he can be a first rate a-hole if he can’t get his way in the set.

Renner vs Damon in number 5!!!

fantastic trailer. very brief, but offers just enough to convince it’ll be phenomenal.

  • Benjamin

Looked a little too Bond-ish, but that may be because of the snow and lack of second-world locals. Overall, not too bad and I’m interested in how they will tie this guy’s story to Bourne. I’m guessing if its a linear sequel Renner may find himself on the wrong end of an effort to terminate the entire Treadstone / Blackbriar programs. I just hope it’s smarter than just another “hunted by the government that created him” story. Furthermore I bet Universal is looking to do 2 or so films with just Renner before doing a final film that pairs Damon and Renner and wraps up the series.

Looks interesting. It doesn have a different tone than the previous films. But I think thats because it IS a totallly different person/angle/story. In the first three, a lot of it is about the fact that Jason Bourne isn’t really sure who he is or what he’s suppose to be doing or how to get out of it. That created a lot of breathing space in terms of not always constantly being about action. Cause he needed time to think and figure things out.

In this movie, I think its going to be a little more direct. This person was trained the same way, but he has his faculties, knows his mission, and honestly the actor is a diffferent type of actor. Matt Damon evokes thoughtfull and brooding.. Jeremy Renner evokes..There’s a problem? Right..Well, I’m gonna solve it with extreme prejudice…And if anyone survives, I might ask them some questions…

It might not be a bad thing if this movie has a different tone, cause all too often, what kills sequals is trying to stick TOO much to the previous tone and failing to anyway..
