The Coen Brothers Looking to Find a Female Lead with TRUE GRIT

true_grit_book_cover.jpgYou (provided you’re a woman between the ages of 12-17) could be the lead in the upcoming Coen Brothers movie, True Grit. The film has opened up a nationwide casting call with the website truegritcasting.com.  Here’s how they describe the character and what they’re looking for:

Fourteen year old Mattie is a simple, tough as nails, young woman in post-Civil War Arkansas.  Her unusually steel nerves and straightforward manner are often surprising to those she meets.  She possessed plenty of true grit and determination.  Enough so that she insists on going with 2 marshals to hunt down the killer of her father.  We are looking for a girl who’s tough, strong, and tells it like it is.  Must be able to portray Caucasian.

To audition, you can attend an open call or tape yourself.  The latter means they’ve essentially opened this up to worldwide casting and I wonder how many auditions they’re going to dig through before they have to finally make a decision and choose their Mattie.  It’s certainly a role worth auditioning for because you’re pretty much guaranteed to be in a great movie and you’d get to act alongside Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin.  Not bad if you’re making your feature film debut.

Wow. The Coen's will have to be at their best. John Wayne. True Grit. That's sacred ground they're messing with. It'll be interesting to see response, once the film is out, from those who are too young to remember or cared to see the original.

I really loved the original, but I can see how it could have been very Hollywood-ized to become a standard western rather than a “gritty” novel. Since my opinions of the Coens are so mixed, I'll be really interested to see what they do with it.
