One of the best comedy series of the modern era only lasted one season, but it appears that it’s due for a comeback of its own.  Deadline reports that HBO is in talks with The Comeback creators/executive producers Lisa Kudrow and Michael Patrick King to revive the comedy as a limited event series.  The show only ran for one 13-episode season in 2005, but quickly gained cult status as a criminally underseen gem.  Kudrow played Valerie Cherish, a washed-up sitcom actress whose “comeback” on a new sitcom is captured by a documentary crew.  The series was Kudrow’s first project following the conclusion of Friends, and her stellar performance earned her a Best Comedic Actress Emmy nomination.

Hit the jump for more on the potential return of The Comeback.

Per Deadline, HBO’s discussions with Kudrow and King involve bringing The Comeback back to the pay cable channel as a “limited/event series”, which is all the rage at the moment.  Fox is taking a similar route with the popular drama show 24, bringing it back for a limited 13-episode run under the title 24: Live Another Day, and virtually all the networks are now developing “event” television shows that are only meant to run for one or two seasons.

There’s no timeline given for The Comeback’s potential return, nor do we have any details with regards to the plot.  Kudrow is currently busy with her Showtime series Web Therapy and King acts as showrunner on CBS’ 2 Broke Girls, but the duo has spoken fondly of returning to the world of Valerie Cherish in the past, so one imagines they’ll find a way to make this work.  I, for one, am over the moon about this news, seeing as how I very much do want to see what Cherish is up to after all these years.  If you’re unfamiliar with the show, watch some clips below.
