Last month word surfaced that HBO was looking to possibly resurrect the fantastic comedy series The Comeback.  Well, they got it.  E! Online now confirms that the cult favorite will indeed return for a six-episode run, with Lisa Kudrow poised to reprise her role as Valerie Cherish, a washed-up sitcom actress whose “comeback” on a new sitcom was captured by a documentary crew.  These new episodes will take place 9 years after the events of the first and only season, with Malin Ackerman and Kellan Lutz also set to return for a handful of episodes.

Hit the jump for more, and if you’re never seen The Comeback, do yourself a favor and catch up on HBO Go.

Per E! Online, things are moving quickly on The Comeback resurrection, as production is scheduled to begin on May 19th.  Creator Michael Patrick King is currently working on the scripts with writers Dan Bucantisky (Scandal) and Amy B. Harris (Sex and the City).  Ackerman and Lutz are not expected to appear in every episode, but will be woven in and out subject to their availability.

Though these six episodes are intended to be a standalone event series, if they do well the possibility remains that The Comeback could be re-ordered to series.  I was a huge fan of the 13-episode initial run as well as Kudrow’s brilliant comedic performance, so I’m enthused to see the show return.

No word on when this event series might air on HBO, but my guess would be late this year or early next year, possibly after Girls.
