The first trailer for James Wan‘s The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, the sequel to 2014’s period piece/ghost story, has arrived, and there seems to be plenty more eerie happenings in store. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a follow-up film that explores another terrifying case from their archives. As the title suggests, the sequel will see the Warrens heading to Enfield in North London in order to assist a single mother raising four children in a haunted house of horrors.
Scenes of Wan’s trailer for the original film (and, of course, from the film itself) still stick with me today, specifically the ones showing how playful that poltergeist happened to be. (::clap clap::) This trailer, however, is chock full o’ the typical tropes seen in a plethora of other exorcism movies: the inverted Christian cross, the Latin chanting, the body of the possessed crawling across the ceiling, etc, etc. The only playful thing glimpsed in this early look is the use of a zoetrope which reveals scenes of the Warrens’ misadventures in a fun and creepy new way. Then again, Wan himself is wary of trailers spoiling too much of the movie, so here’s hoping he found a way to hold a lot of the creepiest footage back.
