Netflix has found their new Prince Philip! Outlander star Tobias Menzies has closed a deal to take over the role originated by Matt Smith in Season 3 of the breakout drama The Crown. Per Deadline, Menzies has officially signed on for the role for the next two seasons of the celebrated series, which chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s through modern times, with a new set of actors taking on the role every two seasons as the characters age.

Menzies is joined in Season 3 by previously announced cast members Olivia Coleman, who will step into the role of the Queen (originated in a Golden Globe-winning performance from Claire Foy,) and Helena Bonham Carter, who will replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret. Avengers star Paul Bettany was previously in talks for the role of Prince Philip, but negotiations fell apart over a scheduling conflict.

Menzies is always keeping busy. The actor is best known for his roles in prestige TV dramas like RomeGame of Thrones, and most recently for his double role as Frank and Jack Randall in the Starz hit Outlander. Other recent works include appearances in the Amazon comedy Catastrophe, the BBC/AMC limited series The Night Manager, and Universal's blockbuster action movie Underworld: Blood Wars. He's currently co-starring in AMC's stunning new limited series The Terror (you can check out my full glowing review here or do yourself a favor and just start watching it).

Show creator Peter Morgan previously spoke about the decision to recast as the characters age. "You can’t ask someone to act middle-aged. Someone has to bring their own fatigue to it," he told Variety. "The feelings we all have as 50-year-olds are different than the feelings we all have as 30-year-olds. That informs everything we do."

Season 3 is expected to cover the years from 1964 to 1976, which means we won't quite make it to the introduction of Princess Diana, who met Prince Charles in November of 1977, but we will meet Camilla Parker Bowles, who romanced Charles on-and-off for three decades before their marriage in 2005. Seasons 3 and 4 are planned to film back to back, with Season 3 expected to drop on Netflix in 2019.

What do you think? Is Menzies a good fit for the part? Were you holding out hope for Bettany to come back? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts.
