Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway Grace EW’s Cover for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; Tom Hardy Talks Bane’s Voice

     April 11, 2012

The summer movie season is about to begin, and Entertainment Weekly is kicking things off with their annual Summer Movie Preview.  Naturally, Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway grace the cover for Christopher Nolan’s closing chapter in his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises.  The image gives us yet another look at Batman and Catwoman, but EW has also provided some choice quotes from the upcoming issue.  Included is Nolan talking about his approach to Catwoman and Tom Hardy addressing the fan outcry over the difficulty of understanding Bane’s dialogue.

Hit the jump to check out the cover and to see what Nolan and Hardy had to say.  The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 20th.

dark-knight-rises-ew-cover-imageFirst and foremost, let’s get to the whole “not understanding Bane” issue.  Speaking with EW, Hardy doesn’t seem to think we’ll have a problem understanding the dialogue once we settle into the movie:

“The audience mustn’t be too concerned about the mumbly voice.  As the film progresses, I think you’ll be able to tune to its setting.”

Let’s remember that the IMAX prologue was released just after Nolan had wrapped shooting, so hopefully the final audio mix is a bit more intelligible.  Hardy admitted that they didn’t go the muffled route without pause:

“It’s a risk, because we could be laughed at — or it could be very fresh and exciting.”

The actor revealed that Bane’s dialect was influenced by “a desire to honor the character’s brains and Caribbean heritage.”  As for Catwoman, EW notes that Nolan’s take is far from the “campy sexpot” of some other incarnations, but more along the lines of “a shifty cipher, calloused survivor, and world-class criminal.”  Nolan himself described his Catwoman thusly:

“She has a very strong way of protecting herself and those she cares about, which implies an underlying darkness.”

You can read much more from Nolan, Hardy, and Hathaway herself over at EW.  I’m sure we’ll be bringing you more images and choice nuggets of info as the magazine’s issue hits shelves.

Update: We’ve just posted the 6 new images from EW’s The Dark Knight Rises article here.

    And so it begins…

The Dark Knight Rises internet and worldwide promo take over has begun.

The Avengers in 3 weeks. after that their promos will die down making way to the biggest blockbuster of the year.

It gonna be a hot summer my fellow Colliders. Get your sprinklers on beeyatch!

    • Batman

“a desire to honor the character’s brains and Caribbean heritage.”
lol wtf? Bane did not sound Caribbean at all, he sounded like some Eastern European mad scientist…and Catwoman looks completely silly. not liking Nolan’s description for her, it sounds like she’s going to be silent and brooding just like Batman…that’s not the Catwoman I know. But of course, all the Nolan fanboys who have his dick stuck far up their asses are going to disagree with me.

Wahh Wahhh!!!!WAHHHH!!!!Maybe, you have something stuck up YOURS!!!!You complain too much!!!Go watch BATMAN 89′ and stop crying & complaining!!!

      • Dev1359

^lol, butthurt Nolan fanboy is mad as hell

  • Jon Snow

Speaking as a fan here, I still do not like Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, and I am still not sold on their design. I understand why they changed what they did, and in theory it sounds great, but it doesn’t seem to have transitioned well to actual application. Obviously I very well may be saying the opposite on opening day, but I’m usually not wrong on my own opinions this close to an opening.

I just don’t think she’s hot enough. I spent the Dark Knight cringing at Maggie Gyllenhaal as Batman’s sexy GF. It’s another big a stretch to see Hathaway as one of the sexiest superhero’s ever. Sheesh, there are hot women that can act out there. Nolan’s just got a bad eye.

      • potterboy

i’m with you on Maggie. even when she died, there wasn’t that real sadness in me(for one, she was Rachel for just one movie, and she didn’t made an impression on me). atleast Katie was cute. But i have to say, i was watching the Adjustment Bureau the other night. Emily Blunt SHOULD have played Rachel in both movies! she has the charm that Katie has, and can go feisty as a lawyer. plus a damn good actress(Meryl Streep said herself).

that being said, i’m okay with Anne Hathaway. Nolan likes casting against type. the best example of this is Heath Ledger

P.S. Wouldn’t it have been AMAZING if MATT DAMON was able to play Harvey Dent(a more perfect and inspired choice than Eckhart). Him and Emily Blunt has killer chemistry!

    • pooper

I can’t wait to see the Batman movie you make that has a different actress for Catwoman!

  • Ben

I actually agree with Jon Snow on this one… not at all digging Hathaway as Selina Kyle, but I’m definitely not going to start prejudicing myself about the film. I’ve no doubt Nolan has the skills to pull off the incredible and I’m really hoping to be super impressed.

    • T.J.

UGH! You have Batman, and standing next to him, some kid in a retro 60s halloween costume. UGH! UGH UGH!!! It just doesn’t work. “world-class criminal” who wears no protective headgear…in GOTHAM CITY!!!??

      • Travis

Don’t knock it ’till you watch it guys. Just sayin’…I had issues with the first time I saw pics of the Tumbler, that is until I saw the bastard in action and my opinion changed instantly. That is all :)

  • Travis

Caribbean heritage? Bane as hula master…he must know how to party Hardy LOL :P

All jokes aside, this info is pretty awesome. Catwoman will definitely be a product of conflict in this film.

  • lari

i like anne vut she’s not sexy or seductive or mysterious like cat woman is im confused how directors cast the wrong actors for strong roles

  • Phoenix

Anyone else hoping that Nolan will include a Catwoman fight scene like the prison fight scene with Silk Spectre II in Watchmen?

Just walking down a hallway and taking down everyone who comes up against her. I just see that suit and I wanna see that prison fight scene level of ass kicking.

  • Nomis1700

When will it hit? The EW

  • Mike

I don’t get why everyone had trouble understanding Bane in the trailer. I’ll give you it’s muffled and gravely but it’s still intelligible. “When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die”

  • Junierizzle

I think Anne is fucking hot! I don’t know what you guys are talking about. Who did you want them to cast, Scarlette Johannson? Yup she’s hot and people reeeeaaallly love her performance as Black Widow.

don’t worry about Catwoman! Trust Nolan. He’s a genius.

I agree 110% with Greg & Travis on this one.I mean look at ALL the people who doubted and talked this way before THE DARK KNIGHT came out & ALL WHO WERE PROVEN WRONG!!!The box office numbers speak for themselves: “The Dark Knight” took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, … of July 7, 2006, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

  • HelghastUser

Still think he should’ve chosen someone else to play Catwoman. This chick just doesn’t sell it for me…

  • Dicey Grenor

I’m not digging Hathaway as Catwoman either, but it’s better than Johansson as Black Widow in The Avengers. Geez.

  • Dennis

All I’m saying is, I was skeptical about the Joker and Two-Face in The Dark Knight, and I was proven wronger (is that a word?) than I ever have been during a movie. This time around, I’m excited, and am going to wait till I see the damn thing.

  • OBEY

Bane’s taking over Wall Street! Heh they’re really pushing the “save Capitalism” theme.

Hathaway looks more like a stray lost cat. Will see soon enough. Cnt wait for DKR!

  • Adam

cat b1tch costume is not working !

  • Ash Talon

Catwoman’s costume is very uninspired. If you’re going to reintroduce the character into Nolan’s “realistic” Bat-verse, why would a high-end cat burglar have her hair out and wear high heels? I don’t care if her heels have blades on them. She should be wearing something more nimble. And she’d be leaving hair evidence at every crime site. And the googles being flipped up to look like ears seems like a lame attempt to make her look in character.

Why not restrict her hair under a headpiece/mask which has seems that stick out a bit to form “ears”? It would be more logical and useful. Or just have ears on the headpiece that act as microphones so she can pick up transmissions like police band, the sound of vault tumblers, etc.

  • daveyboy

ok so seriously fuck anyone that was bitching about Banes voice…especially the writers on this website…since the first preview all they say is OH MY GOD…you cant understand ONE WORD this guy says like AT ALL! What THE FUCK are you talking about? You understand the dialogue fine, you can tell what hes saying he just sounds hella badass(and a lil bit like sean connery with that permission to die line)
