The folks at IMAX have recently started a new tradition of giving away limited, specially made posters at midnight screenings of some of the year’s major films.  They did one for Prometheus, they did one for The Amazing Spider-Man, and you bet your ass they’re doing one for The Dark Knight Rises.  The IMAX poster for director Christopher Nolan’s third and final Batman film features Bats confidently floating over the burning city of Gotham with the help of his newfound levitation abilities.  By now you’re probably aware that Nolan shot nearly an hour of footage with IMAX cameras, and the gold standard viewing experience for The Dark Knight Rises is apparently 70mm IMAX.  If you’re attending a midnight screening of the film in the large format, you’ve got a good shot at nabbing one of these posters for yourself.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Dark Knight Rises:

dark-knight-rises-bane-teaser-posterWarner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises” is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar(R) winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar(R) winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar(R) winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar(R) winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

  1. This should’ve been the theatrical poster. It’s way better than that hack-photoshop job in the actual one.

    • you are funny, this poster seems to be a photoshop too, they just took the batman from the poster where he is standing on a police car’s rooftop and placed it over a new background.

      • well yeah, it is photoshopped, but not in the stupid, incompetent, rush-job way where they literally took the teaser from last year and stuck fire and Batman on it.

  2. HELL. YES.

I was gonna buy a poster, but none of the ones on sale appealed to me. A free one definitely works for me. Especially since this is easily the best poster released so far.

  3. Sigh…legends don’t end. That’s what makes them legends.

STORIES end…perhaps that’s what they mean.

      • @ J.

        agree.

        don’t listen to others (i.e. alex), they’ll say it’s a penalty, not a tax.

    • Sigh… that’s not how you bait someone.

Don’t listen to others. They’ll say vote yes on the Jello Bicycle bill.

  4. These posters are becoming more and more disappointing. (And not just that they don’t give them out at IMAX in Australia.) The Prometheus one was great, the John Carter one was great, this one and the Spider-Man one are just dull.

  5. …WTF is Batman supposed to be standing on? The Bat symbol in the clouds is cool, but the rest of the poster is amateurish.

  6. Personally, I think it looks amazing. This one has an awe and power that was absent from any of the others. I feel no need to nitpick and judge every little detail on a poster; if I did, then I’d hate everything. This one’s a winner :)

  7. I kind of like the poster, but he’s really not standing on anything, is he? It’s distracting. Looks like he’s floating above the city on a hoverboard from Back To The Future.

  8. awful: building is angling one way, batman another

been too much mediocre promotional material for this instalment… not cool and not a good omen

usually a sign that they expect a big drop-off after the opening weekend

i’ll be relieved when this nolan mess ends

  9. Not the most flattering pic of batman used here, they coulda got a wind machine on his cape so he looks less like a banana! Needs more Bat-iconography, ie ie flowing cape etc..

  10. It kind of has a Paradise Lost vibe to it. That is what popped into my head upon seeing it for the first time.
