We’ve decided to try out a new feature idea here on Collider called Poster Rewind. Since it’s hard to read every single article each day, we know some of you might miss things from time-to-time (unless it’s Batman news). Every weekend, we’ll have a recap of all the new posters that have been released during the previous week for your viewing pleasure. You can come here and marvel at the latest frame-worthy prints or deplore the overuse of photoshop on Cameron Diaz’ face. We’ll also provide a little background info on the films as a refresher to those who aren’t too familiar with the property or who’ve yet to hear about it.

For our first installment, this week saw posters from The Dark Knight Rises, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Muppets, 50/50, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Thing, Arthur Christmas, and Bellflower. Hit the jump to check them out.

Please let us know what you think about our new feature in the comments. We’d love to hear some feedback from our readers.

The final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises has just about everyone aflutter with anticipation. While nothing is known about the plot, we’ve got Tom Hardy playing Bane and Anne Hathaway taking on Catwoman, as well as just about the entire cast of Inception, so it’s safe to say this movie has ginormous expectations. The poster has a bit of an Inception feel to it, but succeeds in reminding us that Bat-signals mostly serve as a means of destroying buildings. Starring Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Marion Cotillard, The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20th, 2012.

Director Guy Ritchie and the gang are back for another go around with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The first trailer for the film was just released showing Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law once again doing their whole banter thing. The posters aren’t much art-wise, and seem to serve primarily as announcements that a sequel’s coming and those two actors you like are back, though they did give us our first look at new additions Noomi Rapace and Jared Harris (who plays villain Moriarty). Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opens December 16th.

The marketing campaign for The Muppets is kind of great, as the film’s first three trailers were genre parodies taking on popular summer fare. This international poster is no different, as the gang channels Toy Story 3 in a wonderfully charming look at our favorite characters. The new adventure sees the Muppets staging a show to save their theater from an evil oil tycoon who wants to destroy it. Jason Segel co-wrote and stars in the film alongside Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones. The Muppets opens November 23rd.

After lingering in limbo following the MGM fiasco, Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 horror film The Thing is finally getting released. The story centers on an expedition to Antarctica that uncovers a nasty alien being that fancies taking on human form. This poster lacks the luminescence of the one for Carpenter’s film, but it does a pretty good job of letting the audience know that The Thing is scary and enjoys parkas. The thriller stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, and Eric Christian Olsen. The Thing opens October 14th.

50/50, or “the cancer comedy,” has drawn some highly positive buzz after a few advance screenings. Will Reiser wrote the screenplay based on his experience having cancer in his 20’s. The trailer is fantastic, and the poster does a good job of infusing some comedy with a sad situation. Directed by Jonathan Levin, the dramedy stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Anna Kendrick. 50/50 opens September 30th.

The apes are back! Fox is resurrecting the Planet of the Apes franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Utilizing the cutting edge technology from Weta Digital, this time around the apes are created using motion-capture with Andy Serkis (Gollum from Lord of the Rings) taking on the lead role. The poster shows off the stunning visual effects work with the Serkis-infused monkey staring directly into your soul. The film stars James Franco, Brian Cox, and Freida Pinto. Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens August 5th.

Aardman Animation, the folks behind Wallace and Gromit, are taking on the holidays with their animated flick Arthur Christmas. The film tells the story of Santa’s son Arthur, who takes it upon himself to deliver the last present to a child who was passed over before dawn breaks on Christmas morning. A summer-themed promotional campaign has just kicked off, as this poster teases the holiday release date. The voice cast includes James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, and Jim Broadbent. Arthur Christmas opens November 23rd.

bellflower-movie-poster-02

Finally, we’ve got a poster for the Sundance and SXSW hit Bellflower. The plot is apparently hard to elaborate on, as reactions to the film, although positive, have been slightly confuddled, so apparently the flick’s a bit of a mindfuck. The story centers on two best friends who spend their time building Mad Max-inspired flamethrowers. However, when one falls in love with a girl, their lives spiral into a journey of “hate, betrayal, infidelity” and “extreme violence.” So, this explains all the fire. The film stars Evan Glodell, Jessie Wiseman, and Tyler Dawson. Bellflower opens August 5th.
