Rumor: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Will Be Based on the Graphic Novel PREY

by     Posted 4 years, 5 days ago

With the script expected in January and shooting set to start in May of 2011, the rumor mill for The Dark Knight Rises is cranking up. The latest speculation has the movie based on Prey, a story arc in the Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight graphic novel series. As the rumor spread like wildfire across the Internet, the frenzy has driven prices way up and flooded the market with copies of the previously commonplace series.

Prey, written by Doug Moench, is an unofficial follow-up to Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One (which influenced Batman Begins and The Dark Knight). It features prominent Gotham psychiatrist Dr. Hugo Strange (rumored to be played by Tom Hardy), who uses his influence on the mayor to form a task force to capture the vigilante Batman, the object of Strange’s obsession. Heading this task force is the newly promoted Commissioner Gordon, who must weigh his responsibilities to Gotham against his loyalties to Batman. Meanwhile, Dr. Strange deduces Batman’s true identity and plays mind games with him, finally attempting to kill the Dark Knight in order to become him.

While this assumption remains wildly speculative, hit the jump to see why it might have a leg to stand on.

batman_prey_comic_book_cover_01Here’s what we know so far about all things surrounding The Dark Knight Rises:

  • Director Christopher Nolan has made it clear through his previous two installments in the Batman franchise that he prefers gritty, realistic and psychologically driven storylines and villains to over-the-top schlock (see Batman Forever and Batman and Robin).
  • Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have both taken influences from existing source material (the previously mentioned Batman: Year One, as well as The Killing Joke, and The Long Halloween) so it’s not a stretch to think they’ll do it again
  • The Dark Knight ends (spoiler, but honestly who hasn’t seen this yet?) with Batman running from the law and the citizens of Gotham believing that he killed Harvey Dent. Commissioner Gordon tells his son that they now have to chase Batman.

So with the idea of Prey fitting into canon so nicely, it’s understandable that other entertainment websites would jump at the chance to stir the gossip pot.   Total Film even made the guess back in October, although at the time they projected that Hardy would play Max Cort, a psychotic cop with an intense hatred of vigilantes. And of course, the rumor has been supported by a string of phantom sources with no hard evidence except that they knew a guy who knew a guy who has connections with the PR department But this is part of the fun isn’t it? This is what we do when we get excited about a movie that’s sure to be epic. So let’s dig in a little further.

Not only does Dr. Hugo Strange fit in well with Nolan’s preferred villains, he’s one of Batman’s oldest nemeses, predating both the Joker and Catwoman (more on her in a minute). Strange originally was portrayed as more of a mad scientist, but recently has taken on a psychological and manipulative role, preferring to pull strings from behind the scenes. This would be a fantastic contrast to the in-your-face mayhem of The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Heck, even Catwoman shows up in the graphic novel series. The Dark Knight gave a nod to her inclusion in the next film when Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) quips that Batman’s armor “Should do fine against cats.” We all know how much we love speculating about who will play her!  Maybe one of these lovely ladies will get the role of Catwoman while the other portrays the damsel in distress? We’ll have to wait and find out.

the_dark_knight_movie_image_01So for right now, we’ll call this “educated speculation” since it’s far from being a solid fact. Yes, the storyline meshes well with the end of The Dark Knight. Yes, the villain matches Nolan’s tastes. But I have a couple of issues with this line of thought.

The previous installments of this series have been loosely based on graphic novels, but have put forward an original story. While this doesn’t preclude Prey from being source material, I caution that it might only serve to introduce Dr. Hugo Strange as the villain. And how exactly would it jibe with the title, The Dark Knight Rises?

With that being said, Nolan has mentioned that this will be his last involvement with the franchise and plans on closing out the trilogy. I don’t see Prey providing that final act without tying off storylines that were started in Batman Begins. I, for one, fully expect Talia al Ghul to make not only an appearance, but feature prominently in the plot. Her involvement would refer back to the first movie and could tie up the trilogy quite nicely.

But with Nolan wanting to close out the series with the seeming inclusion of villains smarter than Bruce Wayne, there is the possibility that his secret identity may not stay so secret. Could Nolan do the unthinkable? Will the Batman be publicly unmasked in The Dark Knight Rises? Sacrilege, I know. But what a profound way it would be for Nolan to stamp his claim on the final act of this trilogy.

This all seems to fall into place nicely. Everything about it makes perfect sense, and I’d be surprised if this wasn’t the route it was going.

Great article. I cannot wait for “The Dark Knight Rises” now! :D

  • http://awesomesauce.blogg.se tigersuit

Talia al Ghul seems much more fitting and plausible than Catwoman, imo. And btw, that “should do fine against cats” doesn’t mean anything. This reminds me when TDK came out, and EVERYBODY thought that The riddler would be included in the third film just because someone was named “Mr. Reese”.

  • Rp

OK, let me get this straight. No Riddler, no Two-Face. Instead it looks like we’ll have Talia Al Ghul, Catwoman and Dr. um, Strange is it? WTF? All I have to say is FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU! In Nolan We Trust my ass.

I’m guessing you didn’t like the last 2 Batman movies.

      • Rp

Haha little fanboys! I’m sure I know more about Batman than most. And yes, I thought Nolan’s first 2 were masterpieces. Except for the fact that they fucked up Two-Face and he would have been an awesome villain for the third. Or how about Riddler as a Zodiac like killer, or Bane ala “Machine” in 8MM. Or how about Black Mask for Christ’s sake. During his first run in the comics he killed a guy and made a girl eat pieces of his corpse. Hardcore shit. Instead everyone is oh-so-excited about Catwoman. Fuck that. I couldn’t even buy her as a whore junkie.

    • bat_country

Scarcrow and Ra’s were villains no one outside of Batman fans knew much about but Nolan made them awesome.

    • Sccitylhh

I’m guessing he probably thinks Batman is real.

I agree with Rp. Catwoman??? That ruins it all for me. These are graphic stories and Catwoman makes them Cartoony. Unless they do a character similar to Mallory Knox. Shes the baddest chick ever in a movie and she should get the part if they want to do it right.

I think Nolan has pretty much proved he’s smarter than internet “journalists” and the people that read their “writing.” It will probably be something completely different.

    • http://www.collider.com Jason Barr

I understand your contention that web journalists aren’t real journalists. In spite of the fact that web journalists who actually have degrees in journalism do exist, your point is still taken.

That said, I’m not sure you can contest that any write-up, regardless of how spot-on or ludicrous it may prove to be, is not “the act or art of forming visible letters or characters.”

This is the worst article I’ve read on speculation about the dark knight rises.

    1. I’ve owned the Prey mini series since I was a kid. It’s nothing special.
    2. The guy who wrote this article clearly hasn’t even read the comics and his speculating based on someone giving him a quick synopsis of Prey, because if Tom Hardy was going to play anyone he would clearly be playing the big beefcake angry cop (the guy with the sword on the cover of the comic) not Hugo Strange who is an old man.
    3. There is no information in this article. No sources. It’s just spreading a BA rumour based on another BS rumour.

I’m learning anytime you see “Rumour” in the headline of a Collider article, my pet fish will have more insight than anything written here.

    • nick

No one said Nolan would follow the “Prey” story line exactly as it was written, the article just states that there are rumors that the events of “prey” might inspire what happens in The Dark Knight Rises. What is to stop Nolan from making Hugo Strange a younger character? After all…the Nolan films take place during Batman’s younger years; just because Tom Hardy played a buff dude in Bronson doesn’t mean he will play a beef cake cop in Batman. Don’t be such a troll, man. People loved The Dark Knight so naturally they’re going to speculate as to what will happen in the sequel, have some fun with it.

      • BarnLoaf

but Hardy is a buff dude, Nolan knows that. Why not consider Hardy as Tommy Elliot/ Hush, it would still work with Nolans realistic story arcs/

      • TheWatcher

I would love to see Hardy take on Hush…

        Hathaway as Catwoman.

I like that “graphic novel” earns more cred than to say that “Prey” was a story arc in the on-going monthly comic book series.

NO TO CATWOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOLAN DONT DO THIS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

    • Yeezy83

Why not Catwoman? Im talking about prostitue Selina Kyle rather than another cartoonish Catwoman, would fitting to have an appearance from her. I am also tired of hearing Charlize Theron thrown in the mix as a contender for a role in TDKR. She wasn’t even on the list for female leads that where being considered. What has she done lately? Aeon Flux was garbage, that film did no justice to the good ol days of liquid TV. And I think she is taller than C. Bale, how would that look on film?

      • TheWatcher

Why did you suddenly go on an unprovoked anti-Theron campaign?

And I agree with Pr. Green, I just don’t see how Catwoman would fit into Nolan’s world, especially in the “final film”…

I like it. And strange is an excuse to bring the scarecrow back, which is aces in my book.

It’s smart to not rely too heavily on material that has already been heavily mined. They got lucky with Ledgers Joker, but there is no way that you can’t compare it to Nicholsons.

    • Pawn65452001

I think what helped Ledger’s Joker was that he died before the movie came out.

I haven’t read “Prey” but now I want to. It sounds like the logical step in terms of storytelling momentum. I think the combination of Hugo Strange, a relative unknown to the mainstream, and Catwoman would be a good combination. You could also tie him to the League of Shadows by having him be the one who weaponized and created Scarecrow’s fear toxin. Which he did in the comics.

  • Tgibfo

Love this idea, but highly doubt Talia al Ghul for this next movie. Ras al Ghul in BEGINS is actually just a fake name – kinda like The Dread Pirate Roberts – that can be inhabited by anyone to keep the myth strong. It would have to be a Talia Ducard, technically. And I doubt that seriously.

  • Eric1976Miller

I can tell no true Batman fan is among you, and if there are you failed to mention Terror, with is a series that serves as a continuation of the Prey story arc. Look it up and you’ll get a better idea of the material Nolan could use as the basis of his story. If he does, in fact, go this route I would love to see what he does to the story to fit them into his Batman trilogy.

  • SMASHPUMPKINMAN

I FULLY subscribe to the idea that tom hardy will be a minor villian in the rumored form of hugo strange and the main villian will be Talia al Gul in the as of yet to be cast female role being spoke of. Like it was said, it refers back to part one of the trilogy and ends where we began, it just fits. AND WE NEED MORE CILLIAN MURPHEY AS SCARECROW!!!

  • http://textualfury.wordpress.com/ Kat

Why exactly do we need a Damnsel (spelled that way on purpose) in Distress? Why can’t we have a strong female lead who causes a Mansel to be in distress?

Do you think in little boxes of cliche? Is THAT why? Yes the first two had Rachel Dawes to annoy females everywhere with the inanity, though she improved drastically in the sequel but, and I am a rabid batfan and have been for twenty three years, not every damned story needs a DAMNSEL IN DISTRESS. There are women who are fully capable of kicking ass and taking names.

Oh. Catwoman you say? Talia you say?

Who would want Batman to unmask for the world? it would kill the series and again a new reboot would be there to begin with. we know that this is the best reboot of batman we ever had and may not have a better one than this. so, highly appreciate that not to unmask him and only 1 or 2 main new characters can know about his identity so that we continue the series by some other director with a new trilogy.

  • Brendan Green

I always find it strange (excuse the pun) that every site espouses how Nolan favours the gritty approach – whilst totally ignoring the fact that catwoman is anything but. The concept of a skinny hollywood actress in lycra beating men up is, lets face it, absurd and only introduced in the comics to placate the militant feminist brigade. Pretty much every film churned out by Hollywood these days, be it big budget or B movie, invariably has a bolschy hard-ass woman who can somehow withstand blows to the face from tough as hell men, come back for more, and then restrain them whilst reading them their rights or something. This is nonsense and I hope Nolan doesnt pander to his WB pay masters and include Catwoman in TDKR. Prey is a good GN apart from Catwoman in it. Nolan’s world is a gritty world and thus the thought of a size 6 actress trading with Batman fills me with dread. I’m a bit worried he might well include Talia also, although in the comics I have of her she is more giving orders to her underlings as opposed to beating up 17 stone men who would be able to snap her neck like a twig in real life. Same goes for Huntress and all the other feminist created ‘warriors’ (cough). Personally I like women to be smart and sexy but come on, going toe to toe with Batman? Please Nolan don’t or else you’ll ruin the girtty world you created….Think Tom Hardy is a brilliant choice though – he has the subtle menace needed for Strange but also the bubbling madness which erupts when he is desperately trying to work out who Batman is and how he came to be (as he does in Prey). I was reading also that Bale hasnt ruled out returning in years to come to play an aging Batman in The Dark Knight Returns. That would be very good – although it would have to be an R as its pretty strong in places.

ehh i wish they had better writers, i wish the movies would be better, batman begins was good, dark knight was meh to say the least, and yes i love batman, my favorite character since i was born. i hate the plan to make batman realistic, the point of comics were to take you out of reality. i have seen really good indie films that are way better than these big budget films. has anyone seen “city of scars” or “Patient J” if you haven’t then you should, these are what a real batman movie should.

How are these any better? City of Scars was so stupid I just couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Batman actually letting a cop’s opinion influences his own morals? The Joker, the most psychotic criminal mastermind in the History of comics, leaving a loaded gun lying around?

These indie fan flicks are just made by idiots with no talent who only care about getting into Hollywood, and have little to no respect for the source material.

      • Salander99

As fan films go, there decent. But your idiot if you these are actually better then Nolan’s films. Both of these indie films are full of: disrespectful changes to the Batman mythos, awful acting, terrible directing, huge plot holes, unrealistic dialogue and just bad story telling.

    • Movieguy

okay…. while the production values are high, and it looks like you tried really really hard, there are just too many flaws to overlook. the biggest reason (and there are quite a few) that the makers of this “film” have failed is that there seems to be no real concept of character. they have taken for granted that the Batman characters exist in an already established franchise. in that, they have completely failed to engage the audience in any meaningful way, either with Batman, the villians, or the victims. throughout, i am continually asking myself, “Who are these people, and why should i care?”

  • Awesomesmartguy

the article is feasible to say the least. we still haven’t seen full on scarecrow for more that a few minutes and if he mixes the prey storyline w/ the fear storyline then we have a chance to see hugo strange, full on scarecrow, and a catwoman (hopefully not) or talia role as well, all of which w/ said storylines make total sense. i’m into it. yeah, i’ve got problems w/ both nolan films, mostly rachel fucking dawes, but i like where this is going. riddler would have sucked.

  • Mantronix

I would prefer to see in the future a fourth movie, if done right Batman is worth that as for Hugo Strange perfect. However when Nolan leaves he should suggest another director, for the franchise if not well done woud like to see hint of Dick Grayson.

Whatever Nolan and his team come up with will be on par, if not better than BB and TDK, Nolan is a genius, case in point, taking three years from TDK until TDKR, rather than rushing two more films that would have been blockbusters, but would have yet again shit on the Batman franchise.

I’m all for the Prey storyline, no one outside of the Batman fan universe knew who Scarecrow or Ra’s al Ghul were, and BB was a huge hit, but I’d also be down to see the Penguin as a Benny the Bull type mafia don, or even Catwoman. I mean Catwoman couldn’t be more ridiculous than a guy dressed in a black bat suit, right?

“I, for one, fully expect Talia al Ghul to make not only an appearance, but feature prominently in the plot. Her involvement would refer back to the first movie and could tie up the trilogy quite nicely.”

And I don’t, since Talia wasn’t even in Prey, and I can’t even think of a story which involves her and Hugo… Or even Black-Mask who is people’s second choice for villain. It just seems like hopeful thinking saying Talia will be in a film that would have no known Batman villain if she was in it. Don’t get me wrong though, I’d love for her to be in a film as I was a big fan of some of her episodes in the 90′s cartoon.

“Haha little fanboys! I’m sure I know more about Batman than most.” “Hardcore shit. Instead everyone is oh-so-excited about Catwoman. Fuck that. I couldn’t even buy her as a whore junkie.”

Oh so you know more about Batman than most huh? So how come you don’t understand Batman is about story, and plot, and not “hardcore shit” as you so clearly said. And if you knew so much about Batman, you would know Catwoman isn’t a “whore junkie” but the answer to Bruce’s depression, something for him to live for, as Bruce and Batman. And I’m pretty sure when Black-Mask made Catwoman’s sister eat her husband, it wasn’t during Black-Mask’s first run and was in fact in Catwoman #16. =)

  • Taha

I don’t think that the third movie will “tie” the trilogy , Nolan’s batman films are not one story like lord of the rings, on the contrary there was few ties between The first film and the second, each of the two movies had a unique style, so i expect that the third one will be something unexpected but still a Nolan kind of experience, still i have my own fears, there is the #3 curse, every third comic book movie sucked (batman “Jim carry” forever, dancing spider-man 3, San Fransisco boringly ending X-men 3″ etc..) so this will really test Christoper Nolan’s skills.

  • ForTheLoveOfBats

Well if they use the Hugo Strange angle then they will be just copying the up comming Batman: Arkham Asylum video game sequal. . . Batman: Arkham City

  • The Yeah

I haven’t read “Prey” either but now I really want to. It sounds like the smart way to go in terms of Nolan’s current Batman story and where it is heading. I think the combination of Hugo Strange, a relative unknown to the mainstream-but has potential to control a secret “mob” to find Batman, and Talia al Ghul would be a good combination. “Prey” from what I have heard, portrays Strange as a little nuts…which would go well with Nolan’s storytelling. You could also tie him (Strange) to the League of Shadows by having him be the one who weaponized and created Scarecrow’s fear toxin…thus tying in the first film as well. Someone mentioned this earlier that Strange did this sort of thing in the comics before.

I would be all for this (the “Prey” aspect)…or the fact that Strange had developed a super monster in BANE for numerous years…psycho-analyzing him…training him with a venom formula to perform at a higher level…(much like tying in Scarecrow with his fear toxin from the league of shadows)…sharing in the fact of both being obsessed with the nature of the Batman….and taking over his city could be a good story to tell as well.

  • jscottu

Joel Schumacher burned the franchise down (some people just want to see the world burn)…Nolan salvaged it from the ashes. I think they should forget about catwoman (unless it is VERY underplayed). Going back to very old villians makes a lot of sense…no recent baggage to deal with. Don’t unmask Batman…that would cheat the franchise. Don’t hire ANYONE who isn’t at least as good as Nolan for future movies.

  • Brad

Well I must say that I hope this doesn’t end up as a trilogy. There is waaaay too much left out. I, like most people, absolutely love the new darker Batman but you can’t just ignore major charaters like Catwoman, The Riddler, Penguin, (I can do without Poison Ivy), and most of all…Robin. I know I know, there are many who don’t want him in these movies but “Batman & Robin” kinda go hand-in-hand. It could be doable though. Perhaps the Robin story unfold, they become partners, he becomes Night Wing, and then he moves out of “Wayne Manor” (whenever they rebuild it) because he wants to start a family or something (just a thought). Yes I know Penguin looks goofy but maybe they could put him as a Bernie Madoff/Ponzi Scheme artist responsible for a Recession? Also I would love to see Harley Quinn (Angelina Jolie does have the lips to play her) and it would be interesting to see basically a female version of The Joker. Anyways I hope others agree with me. I do love Nolan’s vision for this next film but let’s add on the classic characters with the dark twists and not let this series crap out in 3 movies, just to be rebooted 10 years from now. Maybe in the very last film years down the road…they could cast someone to be a much older Joker for a final battle to wrap up EVERYTHING.

I know that Nolan doesn’t want to deliver many villians like The Riddler, Catwomen, Mr. Freeze or Two Face…but I just wanted to say I’ve always wanted to see Clayface & Manbat in a film. I know it wouldn’t work with the way Nolan portrays this franchise, but I think it would be cool. Just saying. (So don’t go off on me for expressing some interest in villians that I enjoyed watching in the show.)

Don’t worry fans I have made it a point to take none of your suggestion, as to totally blow the nuts off of every one. Again I reiterate that none of you are remotely close to what my obviously higher functioning brain is working on , so just keep trying to figure out if Dom still dreaming, while your waiting for TDKR. Thank you, and goodnight.

1st off Heath Leager WAS NOT BEST JOKER EVER……..He was ok I do picture when I think of the JOker as a crack head with make up on. when I think of Joker I think Patient J Paul monar. In my list of jokers Heath Leager fell to about #10. and as far as the new movie goes as long there no riddler I happy. BUT JOKER NOT BEING RECASTED IS BULLSHIT and everyone knows it leager was good but not that good for joker to die with him.

    MAN!!!
This sounds OK, but i was hoping for something like this:
Batman’s now considered a vigilante, yadda yadda, and he’s facing some villains every now and then, but ONLY in short fight scenes, like in The Dark Knight where he fights Scarecrow. But instead, he fights Killer Croc and Catwoman. Croc doesn’t get much of a backround, since he was in Batman: Gotham Knight, and was shortly introduced. And Catwoman gets a SMALL intro. Also, Two Face may or may not be alive (I want him to be) Anyway, while Batman runs from the law and fights crime, Dr. Strange is trying to find out who he is, by investigating places, staging robberies, etc. And that’s the main plot. In the movie, I’d like to see Arkham Asylum a little more, and maybe have Batman walk through the chambers, passing through jail cells with Croc, Scarecrow, Joker (as a lookalike to Ledger) and so on. and that’s my hop for this one. I’m not too sad they didn’t put Riddler in it-he’s too much like the Joker, but more annoying than funny.

Oh, forgot to say, i would rather have Penguin/Mr. Freeze than Catwoman.

  • @miked888

Talia al Ghul will be in the film, Ra’s al Ghul considers Bane a potential heir to his empire and wants his daughter to marry the musclebound assassin, but we all know that batman and Talia have a kid together add cat women for some added cat fights, its gonna be a love triangle.Bane is defeated by Batman soon after, Ra’s gives up trying to match Bane with Talia.
