Netflix has released a trailer for The Dirt. Directed by Jeff Tremaine (Jackass), the film follows the rise and exploits of the rock band Mötley Crüe. For those who are unaware of Mötley Crüe, they formed in the early 80s and are comprised of bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee, lead singer Vince Neil, and lead guitarist Mick Mars. The film is based off their book they co-wrote with Neil Strauss, The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band, which was published back in 2001 and noted for the candor the band brought to telling their own story.

The question here is will you be interested if you’re not already a Mötley Crüe fan? After Bohemian Rhapsody, I definitely don’t want to see another by-the-numbers rock band biopic, but I think The Dirt has the edge in that at least it has an edge. One of the places Bohemian Rhapsody fails is that it wants to be about how innovative Queen was, but there’s nothing innovative or different about their movie. Judging by the trailer for The Dirt (and the wise hiring of Tremaine as director), the film looks like it will be at least as wild and dangerous as Mötley Crüe, so it feels like it’s channeling the band rather than just being a fan film in service to their image.
