We only just shared that first Insurgent image, but we’ve already got more Divergent Series news to report. It seems as though Lionsgate is happy with director Robert Schwentke’s work on Insurgent because he’s coming back for film #3, The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1. Neil Burger was the man behind the first film, but after news broke that he would not return to helm the sequel, it was announced that Schwentke would take over.
Hit the jump for more on Schwentke and the future of the Divergent franchise. The Divergent Series: Insurgent arrives in theaters on March 20, 2015 and stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller and Zoe Kravitz.
As reported by Variety, Schwentke will be back to direct the third installment and it’ll be called The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1. Schwentke’s got some solid titles to his name like Flightplan and RED, but then of course there’s R.I.P.D., which had a rough run at the box office and wasn’t very good either.
At this point, the only footage we’ve seen from Insurgent is the film’s teaser trailer and it’s a ridiculous piece of promotional material to say the least. Not only is the CG over the top, but it also makes no sense whatsoever to introduce moviegoers to the film using that moment. No, you can’t judge a film based on a teaser alone, but it’s still a disappointing way to kick off the marketing campaign. Hopefully that new trailer coming on Friday, December 12th will turn things around.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1 hits theaters on March 18, 2016 and Part 2 follows on March 24, 2017.
