Hailee Steinfeld is having a moment. Yes, she has some blockbuster clout with Pitch Perfect 2, Ender’s Game, and Barely Lethal, but her performance in The Edge of Seventeen is garnering a lot of attention from critics, who liken the film to classic coming-of-age films like Clueless and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Hear more good things about it in the new red-band trailer.

Few stories truly capture the high school experience — the awkward teen years, the sexual awakening, the fear what awaits beyond, and the psychological torment of other kids. The Edge of Seventeen does a pretty stellar job. Steinfeld portrays Nadine, a high school junior facing all of the above at a time when her Americana jock brother starts dating her best friend, causing a rift between them. What forms a light at the end of the tunnel is her new friendship with a boy named Erwin (Hayden Szeto).

The film's also got Woody Harrelson, Kira Sedgwick, Blake Jenner (Everybody Wants Some!), Haley Lu Richardson (The Bronze), and marks the directorial debut of writer Kelly Fremon Craig.

Here's the official synopsis for The Edge of Seventeen:

The Edge of Seventeen is a new coming-of-age movie in the vein of Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club – an honest, candid, often hilarious look at what it’s like to grow up as a young woman in today’s modern world. Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.
