Sony Pictures has released the full-length The Equalizer trailer for director Antoine Fuqua’s (Olympus Has Fallen) adaptation of the 1980s TV series of the same name.  Denzel Washington leads the dramatic action-thriller as a former black ops commando who comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl (Chloe Grace Moretz).  Soon thereafter, things go south and he finds himself squaring off against violent Russian gangsters.  The film finds Washington reuniting with his Training Day director in Fuqua, and while it’s certainly a “badass” role, I’m encouraged by how introspective the whole thing feels.  Hopefully Fuqua and Washington are able to dig a bit deeper while also delivering the action thrills that audiences expect.

Hit the jump to watch the new full-length The Equalizer trailer.  The film also stars Melissa Leo, Martin Csokas, Haley BennettDavid Harbour, and Bill Pullman.  The Equalizer opens in traditional theaters and IMAX on September 26.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Equalizer:

In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston.  When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help.  He is The Equalizer.

Why do the writers here always refer the crappiest movies when talking about an actor/director/writer etc.? Why not name “Training Day” as the movie people will know Fuqua by? Especially since this has him re-teaming with Washington. “Olympus has Fallen” does not make me think positive thoughts.

    • Adam Chitwood

I mentioned Training Day in the article as well.

Pretty sure it’s kinda of a rule when writing, that you name the most recent project the director etc; has done.

Can’t get excited about a Denzel Washington movie. The guy’s been playing his roles the exact same way for years now and its been ages since he was in a good movie.

    • Michael Singer

Flight was a damn good movie, and that was only two years ago. He got an Oscar Nomination for that one. He’s only been in two movies since then, including this one.

      • GrimReaper07

True, I forgot about Flight. Excluding that one I mean (mostly his “badass” action roles).

      • spongefist

Go watch Rio 2 mate. Denzel can do ‘badass’ all year long for all I care.

Man On Fire, probably the best movie of it’s kind
Blind Bible Bloke one, pretty bloody good
        Flight – amazing
The one with Marky Mark a bit shit, but enjoyable
        Bad gangster dude one, amazing

He is ‘badass’ unlike that annoying twat from Avengers and pulp fiction who is just bad.

and… Olympus has fallen was incredible, so it’s got a great ‘badass’ director as well

        Can’t wait.

The only one of those I remotely liked was Flight. There’s absolutely no chance in hell he’s more badass than Samuel L. Jackson. Denzel acts like a badass, the latter is one. And lol at you not knowing his name when he’s one of the most recognizable actors in the world.

      • Jamie Teller

Personally, I thought Flight was really overrated (that third act is just ridiculous), and I wasn’t even THAT impressed by Washington’s work there. This, though, looks like it could be quite effective. I’m definitely considering giving it a chance in IMAX.

Tone seems a bit messed up, is it an exploitation revenge movie ? or something more glossy, if it’s a mix of the two then it could be a mess.

The thing that struck me most about this movie ever since I first heard it was being made, that at this point now in our pop culture, this is essentially such a simple, generic premise for a movie (mind you, that’s not saying it would automatically equate to the movie being bad), I’m surprised they’d even bother going about securing the rights for it to literally be “the Equalizer”. I mean hell, just even looking back at Denzel’s own career (never mind any other revenge action/dramas of the last couple decades), you can already see some similarity with “Man On Fire” here.

It would be nice if they somehow would integrate the old Stewart Copeland written, classic theme song from the show, a Jaguar, being that Robert McCall drove one, a long trench coat, and a group of his old agency buddies, a’la , Mickey Kostmeyer, Control, etc. Robert’s character had a son, too. Obviously, McCall’s agency life had a strain on his marriage and relationship w/ his son. I remember William “Johnny from the Karate Kid” Zabka played him in the 80s show. This was a classic TV show that the late Edward Woodward played brilliantly until his bad heart caused him to slow down his workload ultimately leading to the show being cancelled prematurely. Great music done by Stewart “the Police” Copeland, great NY locales, crisp dialogue, good action, and very good guests and recurring characters like Robert Lansing playing Control.

I love Denzel and Fuqua’s work. So I really hope they do not MUCK this up. The TV show had a very loyal following and many will see if this movie plays homage respectively, to the old James McAdams produced show,

Yes, as you can tell, I was a HUGE fan of the TV show. I cannot believe I can remember all the character names, actors, etc.
