First Look at Grant Gustin in Costume for The CW’s THE FLASH

Though superhero TV shows haven’t always panned out, The CW has had success in this area in recent years.  After the long-running Smallville came to a close, the network took a risk by launching Arrow, which revolved around a far lesser known superhero than Superman.  The show debuted to a sizeable amount of success—both critical and commercial, and now the network is expanding its DC Television Universe even further with a pilot for The Flash.  As the pilot begins filming next week, a first look at star Grant Gustin in costume has now been released online.  The character actually made his first appearance on Arrow (albeit in “Barry Allen” form), but The CW is giving the character his own spinoff pilot with the hopes of launching a full The Flash series this fall.  The costume is quite impressive, and it was designed by legendary, Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Sleepy Hollow, Alice in Wonderland).

Hit the jump to take a look at the image.  The cast for The Flash also includes Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order), Tom Cavanagh (Ed), Danielle Panabaker (Shark), Rick Cosnett (The Vampire Diaries), Candice Patton (The Game), and Carlos Valdes.

The official logline for the potential series is as follows:

Through a freak accident, scientist Barry Allen is given the power of super speed that transforms him into the Fastest Man Alive, in THE FLASH.

Ummm could be better without his “yeah! I got the job as The Flash on tv, look mom! yeah!” look on his face.

    • TJW

      his mom is dead :’(

    • derpa

So you’d rather have an overused Dark Serious Stern picture that makes the character look like a tool?

Jesus Christ, it was only a joke!!!!

      • derpa

        YOU’RE JESUS CHRIST!

    • And who are you?

He stole that smile from Matt Damon.

Not bad looking. About on par w the 90′s tv series but a little more updated looking helmet. Can’t wait to see it in full.

  • mattinacan

suit looks great, he’s a little young for what i pictured but it’s a good start.

  • LAME

    Looks like Wally West.

    • Lana

      He’s Barry Allen

      • derpa

        Which is the problem.

      He’s Barry Allen

  • God’s Diamond

He looks more like impulse so far imo. I liked the first series so i hope this is good.

  • Al Conyado

it looks like he might be wearing a regular leather jacket there, that weird collar popping out there.

  • Julio Navas

    Too literal.

    … Yahzee approves!

This is a nice homage to the original without looking like a shiny red mess. Could just be good lighting and photography though. Depends how the show itself is lit – I’m imagining its going to be a bit of a brighter colour palette than Arrow.

Maybe just actually, you know, red.

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

It seems like an awfully dim and limited photo to have a strong opinion on the color.

      • Kevin

True, but its still probably close to the same color as the Daredevil costume.

They just show you the helmet so who knows. Still, I won’t be watching this since the awful marc guggenheim/greg berlanti had their filthy hands in this show. I won’t watch anything by them after they screwed up green lantern.

    • Dev1359

They’ve been doing an awesome job with Arrow, by far the best live action comic book superhero show ever done on television. Something tells me that studio exec interference on WB’s part had a huge hand in GL sucking, they spent way too much time on Earth and not nearly enough on Oa/outer space, its like they were scared of repelling mainstream audiences if they had gone the latter route and made it more of a space adventure flick like what it should’ve been.

      • Homer Lannister

No, I believe the people involved Berlanti, Campbell and Co (but mostly Campbell) simply weren’t talented enough to knock it out the park with one film. Even Arrow started pretty poorly, it took them some time to get their footing.

The should do a Flash movie and have Martin Campbell direct it.

Call me stupid but I like that they’re not trying to mess with the look of the suit all that much.

    • Jamesy

Agreed, could they mess with the suit much though? All it really has to be is some form of red with a lightning bolt. Everyone would still recognise it as The Flash. I was kinda hoping we got to see him fully as The Flash in Arrow though.

      • derpa

It could be a watered down Hoodie with some face paint.

  • w0undedmagic

This looks awesome. Hard to believe the CW is pulling off this DC universe in spades.

    • Steven

      Snyder should take note.

  • LEM

I still think they should have had done the back door pilot through “Arrow” but hopefully some crossover stories will happen in the future if the show does well.

  • Mezmero

THE FLASH:FIRST AVENGER LMMFAO! BITE MUCH DC?

    • Strong Enough

      was it really that funny

    • eternalozzie

      someone’s off their meds

    • LEM

So by season 2 he won’t wear a helmet.

  • http://www.compendiumofchaos.com/ Eugene

It’s not bad, but the look feels very 1920s Modernist. I can only assume his rogues gallery will include the vicious Ayn Rand, the diabolical Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Great Gatsby

  • poppincherry

    Eh! One season at best.

  • Seanpb

Here comes an understatement, DC really screwed the pooch with Green Lantern. Not just because of the quality of the film, but because they cast the man perfect for the DCU Flash in the title role.

  • Bob

Im sorry but I dont know how someone cant like this costume at least just judging by this pic….it is amazing. Like perfect.

  • André Camilo

Too Captain America-ish. But that’s not a bad thing.

    • Bob

I was actually thinking before I saw this that Captain America should take note of this to improve their helmet design. The New Cap Helmet looks better, but The Avengers one was pretty awful.

      • derpa

This has been acknowledged…Its probably why Joss ripped off the mask mid 3rd act.

But kinda wish it were Wally. Am a fan of Barry but he was always so straight and vanilla…Wally was a more realistic character…Oh well, maybe we’lll get Kid Flash!

  • pinkincide

So how are they going to make Flash anything but omnipotent in the Arrow Universe? The Flash must live in a Science Fiction heavy world to have credible challenges.

My biggest fear.. that he will be to slow to make writing for him easier.

    • Andrew Arnold

Slow like “The SIx Million Dollar Man”, or slow like “Rain Man”?

    • cimmerian

I think he is going to be slower to start the show. You can get a lot of story mileage out of him becoming increasingly faster through the series until he’s up to comic book speeds.

  • orianalianna

    YES YES YES YES!!!

    Cool. No one cares.

Cool. Way to go champ, you really showed how much you don’t care by commenting

        Burn! Noice!

    • Oliver Queen

      Speak for yourself, mate!

  • Dan

Definitely looks like the Flash… however, I think he sould be wearing something that looks more like a modern helmet. (Not like a leather football helmet) That style still looked goofy, even on Captain America in the Avengers. (and yes, I know it’s better than the original flash)
