Back in April, The Flash movie lost director Seth Grahame-Smith. Warner Bros. presumably wanted someone with at least one feature film under their belt to tackle their tentpole franchise, and while the studio will still be using his script, they’ve moved on to a slightly more experienced helmer.

According to Deadline, Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is in talks for The Flash. Per Deadline, “Warner Bros is looking for the right chemical mix on its superhero picture line based on the DC Comics heroes, and the feeling internally was that Famuyiwa provided a vision that would resonate with young viewers and that vision was very compatible with the script that the studio is moving toward the start gate with.” The "resonate with young viewers" line hints that this will be a lighter film than Batman v Superman.

I’m not familiar with Famuyiwa’s other pictures—The Wood, Brown Sugar, Our Family Wedding, and Confirmation—but Dope is a solid calling card. The movie is a little uneven at times, but it shows that he knows how to work with young, up-and-coming actors and can handle a coming-of-age tone.

We don’t know if The Flash is a coming-of-age story, although Ezra Miller is definitely on the young side (he probably can’t pass for a teenage any more, but he could still easily be college-aged), and it will be interesting to see what Famuyiwa brings to the table. As I said the studio still plans to work from Seth Grahme-Smith’s script, which he wrote from a treatment by The LEGO Movie duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

There’s no word yet when The Flash will be going in front of cameras, but the film is scheduled to open on March 16, 2018. Miller will next be seen in theaters later this year in the Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
