After denying such a thing would happen, especially across networks (although the CW is part of CBS’ holdings), it seems that The Flash and Supergirl will be crossing over after all. CBS announced today that Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) will be paying a visit to Kara (Melissa Benoist) in National City. Details are being kept under wraps for now, but the crossover will take place Monday, March 28th on Supergirl.
In a press release, executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg said,
“We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making SUPERGIRL – THE FLASH and SUPERGIRL are teaming up! We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out. And finally, thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone’s enthusiasm and support.”
Though I watched a few of Supergirl’s first episodes, I’ve admittedly fallen behind on the series, not finding it quite as instantly-engaging as the CW’s take on the DC universe with The Flash and Arrow (and the bonkers but I love it Legends of Tomorrow). As fans of those shows know, crossovers are the bread and butter of the CW, since The Flash launched from Arrow, and Legends launched from both. Bringing Supergirl into this world, too, opens up some interesting possibilities. Even though her cousin can’t find time to visit, Barry Allen can. He’s just that kind of guy!
Those scant comments by Berlanti and Kreisberg (who produce both shows) make it seems like Barry will have more than a cameo, since the words “team up” were used. But Supergirl also films in L.A., while Arrow, The Flash, and Legends are up in Vancouver, so don’t expect too many more crossovers in the future. Still, the timing is interesting. Perhaps Berlanti and Kreisberg wanted to wait until Supergirl found its own footing and its own viewership before introducing their other DC properties into her world?
Regardless, what do you predict for the crossover? Barry seems pretty busy these days with Zoom and the many speedsters that keep showing up in Central City, so we’ll see what kind of Big Bad brings him all the way to National City. Of course, Barry’s crossover stories often have an element of romance to them … could there be something there?
