Sony has released the first official trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, following a (purportedly) leaked red-band trailer that hit the web over the weekend. David Fincher directs this adaptation of the popular book by Stieg Larsson. Rooney Mara stars as Lisbeth Salander, the young heroine who investigates the Vanger family with journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, and Joley Richardson also star. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21. Watch the trailer after the jump.
The two trailers are stylistically identical, though my memory suggests that many of the individual shots differ. (Certainly less side boob in this green band version.) Again set to the pulsing beat of Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song,” the new trailer is a neat piece of editing without offering any real information about the movie. And for now, given the pedigree, that’s more than enough.

I sure do appreciate the tracking shot leading up to the mansion in the snow much more without the shaky cam effect of the leaked version.
Here’s the synopsis for Larsson’s book:
Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption. [Amazon]

Can’t wait!!
I’m getting very excited for this one. This material with Fincher directing = me sold on this.
I like Fincher but seriously, I’m sticking to the original. It was good enough on its own
Your ads are still interfering with the media on the site. A site that prides itself in showcasing media ought to be sure it’s site is able to handle the multiple animated advertisements on the page.
Always great to see Robin Wright’s face in a movie.
Oh, and I LOVE DAVID FINCHER!!!!
Apparently “She’s Coming” was too racy of an end tagline for the green band trailer.
More like ‘She’s coming’ sounded really lame, people said so and they took it out. A wise choice.
I’m just glad they have an actual atractive woman playing the character. Her character in itself is unattractive there’s no need to make her physically unattractive.
@ Alex
As I didn’t read any of the books, I’ve got a question. Is Lisbeth supposed to be the type who seems unattractive becasue of the way she caries herself (potentially due to her life experiences), or is she simply supposed to be a physically unappealing person?
Not trying to imply that this is necessarily a key story element… but this is a distinction I couldn’t quite make when watching the original movies.
The whole attraction of Lispeth Salander is that she doesn’t fit into any of the usual heroine images. Loved the original trilogy. I think it really assists to read the books also. (Especially to get some sort of handle on what Lispeth is all about). The originals were, necessarily, abridged versions of the books, that have several secondary stories supporting the eventual conclusion. It will be interesting to see if the new version brings out other aspects of the story.
Sometimes, acclaimed directors make bad choices. Coppola did Jack, Michael Cimino did Heaven’s Gate, Tarantino did Deathproof.
Seriously, the original didn’t need to be remade. why is Fincher remaking a swedish film? it has no purpose.
Then again, we all knew Hollywood was drooling over the eventuality of remaking this trilogy. We might as well have Fincher directing it, if it was going to be made anyway. Let’s just hope he mines some different but interesting material from the book and puts his trademark style all over it. And hey, adult R-rated trilogies are always welcome to this film lover.
I personally love the Swedish film, and however much I agree with you, I can’t discount anything he directs.
No purpose? Well for us who didn’t see the Swedish film this is the new FINCHER movie!! I’m glad I didn’t see the original. As soon as it was announced that FINCHER was doing it I decided to pass on the Swedish film.
I agree, fuck the Swedish version…Noomi Rapace has to be the ugliest person ive ever seen. The book was fantastic so ill be looking forward to Finchers take on this…
With all due respect, then you are missing a lot of good stuff out there.
somehow i thought people would GET that i was being sarcastic. i thought the name would be enough.
i mean come on? would you ever take a guy seriously who’s bashing fincher. i know i wouldn’t
I wish I could be watching this film right now.
Can’t believe she played Erica in Social Network and now THIS is her next role…..that’s a pretty good move
I swear, this is the first time I’ve been anxious for a movie to come out based on the soundtrack alone. That cover of Zeppelin is *phenomenal* and I cannot wait to have it on my iPod!
What song is that a cover of?
That would be “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin. Only one of their most famous songs, and a beast of an album opener.
I am amazed of how similar it looks to the original sweden version, i thought it would have a different aproach, so that´s why i don´t see the point to make this one, i love Fincher work before Social Network but the original trilogy was so perfect that the only excuse i see it´s because americans don´t like subtitles, sad.
Miriam Wu!!!
While the first one is a great movie…they are far from perfect. Especially the 2nd and 3rd. So many things wrong, still good movies. But not perfect.
@ Kurt
I agree with you. In particular, I think Fincher can do a better job with the action/fight scenes from 2 and 3— but that he wouldn’t do so at the expense of the story. Watching some of parts 2 & three’s altercations on DVD, you get the sense that some of “the big guy’s” victims simply stood still and let him have their way with them.
Along those lines, I thought the last time Lisbeth was put in jeopardy was a bit like the old Batman and Robin TV series (we’re going to explain ourselves, and then subject you to a slow death— while giving you adequate means to save yourself). I didn’t read the books, but got the sense that the texts probably offered a clearer rationale for why the “villains” didn’t simply shoot her.
The originals did a great job, but I think Fincher’s storytelling will likely paint a clearer picture of the subtexts— and potentially graphic scenes— from the books.
Is Fincher on for parts 2 & 3, as well?
I believe he has an option in his contract to do 2 & 3, along with Craig and Mara.
@ Desert Rat
Thanks! The idea of Fincher potentially doing a trilogy is reason enough to look forward to this movie.
Sweden version was OK,not like the books , probably this one is gonna suck.
The Swedish film was GOOD, not amazing. Two or three solid roles, but the pacing was off (dragged a little too often). A reason to remake almost anything, whether it is of an older film or from another country, is to usually put a new stamp on it and to market to a new audience that otherwise missed out.
The original movie did fairly well worldwide, but if memory serves me correctly, it only had a limited run here in North America before being released to DVD and movie networks.
The big thing here though is that the BOOKS have done super well and there is an opprutunity for studios to tap into the market of people who have read the book (or not) and have NOT seen the swedish original (which isn’t everyone, but i’d say it’s MOST people)
also one last thing…to say North America is the only place that remakes other country’s films is just silly, a quick search in google will show you that it’s common place for any country to remake any nation’s films, for the VERY SAME reason North American studios may want to do a remake
I get the hate some people have with re-makes/re-imaginings/etc., sometimes they are just a blatant studio grab at more money.
I saw the original Swedish versions twice each on Netflix (haven’t read the books) and thought they were all great, with the first being easily the best, and outstanding in its own right. I felt the same way about the Swedish film “Let the Right One In”.
People also attacked that remake before it came out for being a studio-grab at money. THe thing is, no one I know has seen the Swedish versions of these films…and all my pushing them to won’t get them to watch a movie with subtitles (I feel sorry for them too).
If great talents can put the effort in to make it adapt seamlessly to English-speaking audiences, isn’t it worth it…to spread the awareness of how great these stories, and film in general can be. Maybe then it can help audiences stop craving complete shit (see all Rom-Coms and 89% of summer films as examples).
I watched all three of the Swedish films. There are certainly great moments, but there are HUGE omissions from the books. Massive, massive departures, and several of them have real significance to the story/message. In the first film, the way the case is cracked is *completely* different from how it goes down in the book.
So those original films (which also smack of made-for-tv quality, FYI) are nice to have for their all Swedish language, but as I read the books in English and didn’t particularly feel like I was missing out on the culture, I’m psyched for the big-budget take on the material. I’m expecting as many departures from the literature, but I’m hoping they are more thrilling.
In the end, it all comes down to the portrayal of Lisbeth. I felt the original series did a phenomenal job- Noomi Repace was great, and the series is worth watching for her. But it looks like Rooney Mara will do a great job, she looks the part, and is clearly dedicated to the role. Mara seems a little more (too?) eager, and I’m not thrilled with how the character seems to be exploited, but it’s a different take. Lisbeth is the crux of the series – as long as they don’t dumb her down for this series, and Mara puts her soul (and not just her nipples) into the role, I think this is going to be a slam dunk.
Am I the only one who thought the books, especially 2 and 3, became absurd and really not that great. The writing was fairly meh and while the story was good the characterization of Mikael especially was pretty bad. I think if they are willing to take liberties with the novels, the Fincher movies could easily be better than not only the Swedish films, but the books as well.
I thought one of the major problems with the second and third Swedish films was simply that however action packed the second and third books were, the story telling and where he took the characters were really not that well done to begin with before the movies.
If Fincher is willing to risk angering fans these could be great. If he is not there is really no reason to remake the Swedish versions.
and yes i know the Swedish films made some major departures from the books however I thought they were often needless and for the wrong reasons. I think there were some departures that need to be made that weren’t and the ones that were made were largely pointless or for the worst. But again this is all imo obviously,
What’s with the whining? The original was decent but SO over-rated. Fincher is probably the best choice for the story and its budget is actually fitting for its popularity. WHY YOU HATIN!?
AND the soundtrack is apparently gonna kick ass, so shut up.
I loved the original, and I am looking forward to this, but I feel as if this movie is trying a little too hard – and I don’t like that. I’m pro-Swedish when it comes to this trilogy.
Garbage! Especially the effing sound track. Sounds like acid grunge.
