Sony has released a new trailer for David Fincher’s adaptation of the popular Stieg Larsson novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  The film stars Rooney Mara stars as Lisbeth Salander, a young hacker with a dark secret who investigates the Vanger family with disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig).  The new trailer is almost four minutes long and goes in depth explaining the plot and introducing the characters.  However, it doesn’t have the kick of the teaser trailer and it doesn’t change my feeling that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is weak source material.  The only thing that’s really keeping me hooked is Fincher.  I like the look of the film and I’m interested to see how Mara will take on such a popular character, but I continue to wonder if Fincher and screenwriter Steven Zaillian have found a way to make the story compelling.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and click here to read the description of the eight-minute version. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, and Joely Richardson. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21.

Here’s the synopsis for Larsson’s book:

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption. [Amazon]

I want to see more Swedish stars in the sequels like Dolph Lundgren, Malin Akeman and Lena Olin.

“my feeling that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is weak source material.”

I certainly hope you’ve read the books to make that statement. I liked the first book immensely. But everyone is entitled to their opinion–no matter how flawed it may be

    • Chris

I agree, that seems like such a ridiculous statement. I haven’t read the book but saw the original and it was extremely good, the story was really compelling. Did you like, read a blurb somewhere and think; “oh my what a weak idea?”

      • Melissa

The book is fantastic he doesn’t know what he’s talking about!

      • Flyersfan20

I’m sure you and others have been coming to this site alot longer than I have, but does he always say something stupid like that in the things he writes?

      • Wolstenholme

        Yes

      • Wolstenholme

I don’t even know how to respond to Goldberg…this looks amazing as was the book

      • DamnBASTERD

Haven’t read the books, but unless the plot is drastically different than the Swedish film adaptation I can’t say I’m too revved up. I thought it was a very been there, seen it all before, run of the mill thriller. The second one was pure pulp, so hopefully Fincher will have fun with that; unlike the Swedish director who thought it was somehow ripped from the headlines realistic.

  • Koroko

Even though it says it was written by “Collider Staff”, you can just tell this was written by Goldberg.

    • Melissa

      LOL!!! Right?

  • G

Yeah, I appreciate you giving the movie a chance, Matt. I however, want to say to those who haven’t read the books that many, including myself, couldn’t put the book down. I loved the “source material.” I liked the swedish movie, but felt it was a bit…I don’t know, stale. (This is why I’m not a reviewer, lol.) I’m really excited for Fincher’s take.

KUBRICK! KUBRICK! KUBRICK! KUBRICK! DAVID FINCHER IS A KUBRICK BITCH!

    • DamnBASTERD

      True……but then, aren’t we all?

This will be a long film, won’t it? Any trailer that’s over 3 minutes long is over 2 and a half hours long (Avatar, for example), but it’s perfect because there’s so much material in the book, you can’t tell it all under 2 hours.

    • PatLang

The film I mean, any film whose trailer is over 3 minutes is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

      • AFong

Seriously… how does the length of the trailer have anything to do with the length of the film… studios cut the specific trailer to whatever they feel is necessary to get what point they are trying to get across. Also there are different type of trailers… teasers, tv spots, theatrical.

  • Nick

this literally looks like a scene for scene remake of the swedish movie. if they were gonna make an american version, at least try to change it up a bit. plus rooney mara doesn’t seem like she fits the role nearly as well as noomi rapace

    • Mark

Nick It’s not a remake, it’s a diferent interpretation of the novel. But I agree with the rooney mara statement.

  • Kíssila Machado

I’ve read the first book not a long time ago, and to me, this Fincher adapt. is looking much superior, especially the take on Salander, so these comments about Mara not fitting for the role are coming to me as a big surprise. In my eyes, Rapace didnt quite get the tone of Lisbeth on her interpretation and it came out lousy and ludicrous, not to mention she doesnt look anything like the character from the book. From the photos and trailers, Mara’s take is looking like a big improovement for the character. I’m really looking forward for the film, and in Fincher I trust.

    • Jason

Mara is exactly how I envisioned Lisbeth while reading the books.
Rapace, although I thought her perforance was stella, she way too old for the role.
Mara seems spot on to me.

And in regards to the story. The first swedish film missed out massive chunks from the books – mainly the relationship betwen berger and blomkqist and the rushed ending.
The two followup were lackluster tv movies.
I have complete faith in fincher, the cast and i’m really looking forward to a second trent reznor score.

I aslo wish that people would not refer to this is a remake of a swedish film.
      It is not.
It is an adaptation of a novel.

Collider is the only place where the readers, the staff and the posters never back up anything they say. they just say it like their thoughts are fact and that others would be likely to jump on their bandwagon. first off, Goldburg stop saying random shit to get poeple to post on your pages so taht people hate you more. truth is we love to hate you already. but your statements are getting insane. “Weak Source Material” ?? WTH, and the posters saying its a GOOD BOOK that doesnt debunk his statement. what we should be saying is that the first book is one of the most Informational and Exposition heavey books i have ever read. so weak source material isnt a good statement. if you hated the book or the first movie say so. and Mara will own this role. Craig is a huge improvement over the original. and there are already differences in this one vs the first one. theres already more background on the main players this time around vs in teh original. people have such a hard time letting go of things and thinking nothing else could be better or told differently. Fincher will have a different feeling that you can already see in this trailer with the front slow zooms that Fincher is known for. the original movie is interesting but it was stale and even though i had read the book it still didnt grab me into the story which an adaptation should do wether or not you know the ending. i didnt mind watching it but Rapace didnt fit the part to me. she didnt have a female quality to her. she was manly and defensive all the time. Mara looks more like a woman with insecurities but an ego to back up her insane talent. we will just hafta wait and see.

  • Phillip Gould

I’ll definitely see it, I just wish that they could occasionally put out an original thriller. The only upcoming one that I can think of is Trespass starring Nic Cage, looks slick and I really hope that it does well. Check it out http://bitly.com/qN22Cm

Does Rooney Mara have an accent in this movie? If so, it’s the only one i picked up throughout the whole trailer. Seems wierd.
