THE GOOD GUYS Making Some Changes Before Series Return This Fall

Fox’s new hour long cop series The Good Guys starring Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks may not have garnered a huge amount of success this summer when it followed Lie to Me on Mondays. But Deadline reports apparently executives at the network like it enough that they are following through on their upfront agreement to give the show a slot next to Human Target this fall. Only nine out of the total eleven episodes aired this summer so the remaining two will be thrown together with nine more episodes for an eleven episode run this fall. Got it? Cool.

But when the series returns this fall, a couple changes will be made in order to boost ratings, improve viewer demographics and generally make the show a little better. Hit the jump for details on the changes and my take on The Good Guys.

With television shows, you have to give them a few episodes to grow and find their footing in tone, characters, style, etc. My allowance for a show to really hook me is five episodes and I’m sorry to say that The Good Guys just didn’t pack the punch that I was hoping and I left it behind. Apparently I’m not the only one who had troubles getting into the show since Fox is looking to snag more female viewers (which the series is apparently lacking) by adding a new recurring character, a young crime scene investigator who will not only inspire a bit of romance on the show, but also has a shot at becoming a series regular. Another recurring character will come in the form of RonReaco Lee, a bumbling criminal named Julius who appeared a few times this past summer. But are these changes enough to improve the show?

Personally, I think the show is already a lost cause. While marketed as a comedy, the genuinely funny moments are few and far between. And sadly, the crime/police elements of the show don’t take themselves seriously enough to warrant hour long episodes, especially when the action and impact of the crimes on the characters and story have little to no bearing on the series as a whole. It felt like the show was trying to be Tango & Cash meets Law & Order but it keeps tripping over itself.

I’d much rather see Bradley Whitford’s time, energy and stupendous talent put to use on a much better straight-up comedy if he feels the need to split from Aaron Sorkin’s intelligent, walk-and-talk series like The West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. In addition, the character he portrays on The Good Guys is a much less funnier version of a character that Whitford originally portrayed (badge, mustache and all) on a half-hour cop comedy series call Off-Duty where he was paired with Romany Malco (Weeds). Now that show was hilarious, knew what it wanted to be, nailed its characters in a short amount of time and should’ve been picked up for a series order (but was snubbed by NBC). But instead The Good Guys is what we they gave us, and I can’t see the show sticking around after its fall run later this year.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with you more. I think The Good Guys is hilarious, and this is coming from a female. I enjoy Whitford's antics and outrageous portrayal of Detective Stark, and the way the show is constructed is very clever.

  • 3rdrocker

Lie to Me's a brilliant, intelligent show. It's no wonder the audience didn't carry over to The Good Guys!

    • Xeridian

You are a fool, I watch both shows religiously… Dan Stark is the single best truest Comedic Character to come along in many years. His Persona is as Genius in it’s own right as Cal Lightman. If any thing this review is bias and sexist toward Female programming. Sorry it’s not Jersey shore, thank god for that… This is good old fashioned Television with a modern twist and I pray it stays. Also, this show is great for Dallas Film Co. and other Creative sources in the area!

  • Hlots11

I think the show is hilarious. It's very much in the vein of shows like Starsky and Hutch and CHiPs. It's not supposed to be super super smart, just fun. Why does every show have to aim for the “female” demographic? Those shows usually suck. And I'm female.

  • nunya

I'm female and I LOVE the show. You're right, Whitford is a genius — but he's remarkably hilarious in this show. And Hanks is a great foil to Whitford's character's insanity.

    • jbill

i completely agree. this show is seriously great for its “fun” factor! it’s exciting and not over dramatic, just plain fun stuff. the characters are great too!

  • Jamjar

As a recent Brit immigrant, I am surprised that the show has more in the way of subtle humour than I have previously seen. I do find the easy going nature of the show a joy to watch. I am so tired of the formulaic police shows that are so prevalent; The good guys is a refreshing change. It is in danger of becoming another great programme killed off due to death by focus group.

  • Necrothug

I couldn't disagree more. THe show's characters are charming, and the comedy is just silly light-hearted fun. I watch plenty of serious shows. Its nice to have a show to just kick back and enjoy. Both Whitford and Hanks provide great characters that are just easy to get behind. For me, its like My Name Is Earl meets Law and Order. Its a silly mix, but its supposed to be.

  • Ceryssa

I agree Lauren; I think it's great as-is, although I am looking forward to seeing Julius more often, I liked him. I like that the show doesn't take itself too seriously; it's an hour of thoroughly enjoyable TV and I've been looking forward to it every week.

Just like your taste in media!

I disagree, too. Good Guys is consistently funny and has a lot of potential. The characters and quality of stories are progressing nicely. And the addition of a regular female character is a necessary move. Whitford is a riot, and Hanks is a solid straight man. Of course, it better do well this fall, or bye-bye.

  • Sally

it's like you were watching a completely different show

  • G_loring22

I'm a 19 year old girl and I think this show is great! Not every female tv viewer wants Grey's Anatomy or The Vampire Diaries. I watch serious shows as well but it's really great to see something different that's complete escapism. It's a silly and FUNNY comedy show. Hanks and Whitford are a perfect combo. I wouldn't mind seeing more Julius, I liked him too. I will be very sad (though not surprised) if The Good Guys doesn't make it. They always end up canceling the good ones…remember Life on NBC?

  • Patticatc

I LOVE this show–I am a woman. Bradley Whitford is a riot and his portrayal of the character that he is, couldn't be more dead on–exactly the way I would imagine this type of guy to be. And, I love the flash forwards/backwards story presentation. I can't WAIT for the next batch of shows!

  • Steve from Ireland

Seriously, this is one of the worst, most misleading reviews I have ever read. I think this is the best new show of the year, quite obviously is a comedy, and Whitford deserves to win an award for bringing the character of Dan Stark to life. Why it would be put on after Lie To Me is a strange choice tbh, as they are so different, but that is the fault of the network. I can't remember the last time I consistently laughed out loud at a tv show, and I am so glad this show has been made as I have been missing Reno 911 immensely (another shocking decision to cancel this too I might ad). I am so sick of the formulaic, braindead muck that is being churned out by these network execs, scared that people won't understand a show if it is not squarely set within a predefined genre. Jeez, get a grip guys, grow a pair, have some more originality and learn to actually have fun and laugh while watching tv. Isn't there enough doom and gloom and depressing writing on tv, especially in cop shows. Do we really need another CSI, or Law and Order, or NCIS spin-off?
Now, in the immortal words of Dan Stark, “let's go bust some punks!”

Hey, Weedkiller, I loved the show too. Are you gonna call me a plant? (Haha, very funny, plant – Weedkiller, hilarious, NOT!)

I can't see a huge point in telling us how good Off Duty was, when none of us ever got a chance to see it.

I'm looking forward to Good Guys coming back. I only wish we could have it for the rest of the summer.

  • pennylane

I disagree with the review as well this ic currently one of the funniest shows.Brdly and Colin have perfect buddy chemistry and it just shows Bradly's great range.Count me in as another female that loves it.

  • Ejz

“Good Guys” made Monday night my favorite time because it was the one thing I did with my kid. It caught my 20 yrs son's attention — so we laughed out loud watching it, talked about the stupid funny stuff to others and sat back down each Monday night TOGETHER!

  • Ezj

AMEN! “Ha Ha Ha” laugh out loud funny! Thank you.

  • jft

“Good Guys” a good time! Wonderful to watch entertainment that actually is made as Entertainment.

  • Really?

I agree with Lauren. Good Guys is hilarious and I disagreed with you more the further I read.

You want to see Bradley Whitford doing a straight up comedy? This is a comedy. Some of it is dry humor but there is no attempt to be a drama. Who the hell tries to be Tango and Cash?

As an aside, I love that Julius is getting a bigger part. He's the Huggie Bear to the Starky and Hutch parody (and the following cop buddy shows movies) that this is designed to be. Again, comedy.

  • KEEP THIS

    this is a keeper

  • jeff wilson

should call mr. norris to boost ratings on good guys,he could help carry this show,i know he would love to work part time on a comedy here in dallas texas.jeff wilson

No one here has seen Off-Duty so you don't know how truly funny and great Bradley Whitford's character can be.

I'm not saying this show shouldn't be funny. I'm saying it should be funnier and the action/plot needs to have more impact on the characters. A movie like Pineapple Express can have decent action and yet still be hilarious, but for me this show doesn't ever hit any of my funny bones. To each their own I guess.

  • GVentola

I myself love The Good Guys, and miss it already. Dad and I were making it a Monday night tradition. We tend to have bad luck picking new shows that don't have as much of a chance as others. But I find the show unique, with its way of backing up time. And I always say my fave shows are comedies with lots of action/adventure, or action/adventure shows with lots of comedy. This show has it all. And of course, I just love Dan Stark. He's usually not my type but he's won me over. Also would like to see if Jack can win back his girlfriend.

  • Tlsnyder42

I like THE GOOD GUYS as is. The show is nothing like the much more boring, PC LAW & ORDER.

  • Steve

I like this show, same with my mother. It's a lot of fun.

  • Afan

Love the Good Guys. I'm on this site because I was trying to find out where it had gone. My husband and I crack up watching it!

  • Marcengill1

My wife and I look forward to The Good Guys every week.It is the most hilarious shoe on tv in years. We looking forward to the fall season. If you don't like this show there”s something wrong with YOU!!!!

This is an awesome show that you don't come away from feeling like a country and its people are going to pot. Tired of feeling like crap after watching shows about child molesters, serial killers, blah blah blah

  • Bossman_the

Very well said! I love this show and see good things for it, if it can survive the new hype of all that other crap out there that young girls (Not all) seem to adore. We need this show in these times of heavy drama and such. So I agree with this 100% I am with you there.

  • Cyberwoman

Personally, I really like The Good Guys. If they are looking for female viewers, I am female and I am a viewer. I am disappointed to read this story saying how terrible it is because I find it pretty funny.

  • Cyberwoman

Nobody but the critics has seen Off-Duty, so how is the average person supposed to judge? We can only judge by what we see coming over OUR TV. If no one lets it on, then we don't get to see it. Of course, all shows should be funnier. Judge the show on its own merit, not in comparison to another show, whether or not Bradley Whitford's acting on one show is better (or worse) than his acting on another show. His character is different on each show.

  • Rubely

Another reason why I say critics dont earn their paychecks they steal money. Ethan, you are not speaking for the general public. This is just your opinion, and its a lousy one. I know I am being a critic of your work, but I did it for free.

  • cw

This show deserves a lot more respect than this article gives…the comedy is easy going, like my name is earl, and i like the similarity between episodes, how minor crimes turn out to be related to massive ones, and how stark is an archaic womaniser, but a good (or lucky) cop, its funny and easy to watch, and i have enjoyed watchin them more than once…which i dont feel the same for on lie to me (unless nothing else is on)

  • cw

wow some morons really have nothing to say…at least be critical with your responses, if you dont like it, say why, just repeating the same comment over and over will get u a reputation of being a mindless idiot…mind u, it explains why you dont get the subtle humor in the show!

  • Chiefrocketry69

Show is funny ur wrong it's funny u know critics never have nothing nice to say

Both hanks and whitford work well together the crimes they solve are hilarious so shut the fuck up

  • George

I am 69 and my wife is 60. We both love this show and rate it as one of our favorites. The chemistry between the characters is perfect and we both look fowardf to each episode. It really makes us laugh. Please do not kill this show.

  • Mark Davidson

My wife and I (traditional marriage: one one woman, one man) both love The Good Guys. It’s funny, charming, and wonderfully silly. Your comment, “And sadly, the crime/police elements of the show don’t take themselves seriously enough to warrant hour long episodes…” points up your apparent inability to enjoy this absolutely not-serious-about-anything show. The “crime/police elements” of The Good Guys are heartily created to be anything but serious.
My wife also likes Glee. I can watch it, in spite of its too-many-for-me insertions of preachy social issues. About Glee’s new season, you wrote …”[Glee's]… hilarious and creative way of catching up those who fell behind last season also serves as a great way to make light of the criticisms that have filled the web from the naysayers who just don’t get why Glee is just a fun-loving musical romp.”
You might take another look at The Good Guys, keeping it mind it was never intended to be a serious show. Maybe you’ll be moved to write, “[I don't understand those Glee-loving] naysayers who just don’t get why [The Good Guys] is just a fun-loving [comedic] romp.”
    Mark

  • Randy

I’ve always said, “If a critic doesn’t like something, it’s probably excellent.” Your analysis of the show is exactly why one needs to immediately doubt the wisdom and opinion of film and television critics, and watch to decide for yourself. Just because you don’t think the show is funny, doesn’t mean it isn’t. The humor is excellent and frequent. The genuinely funny moments are certainly NOT few and far between. The characters are well fleshed out, and the actors casted to portray them do so marvelously.

  • Tahlula Belle

They should bring back “The Good Guys”….it’s an upstanding show with morals and values and is an action packed family show. The characters are hilarious and the actors have been definitely add flavour to the characters.
