The first trailer for Joe Carnahan’s men vs. wolves drama The Grey has gone online.  The story centers on a group of oil-rig roughnecks who are stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after their plane crashes.  They must battle to survive their injuries, the cold, hunger, and wolves.  The wolves apparently play a big role.  This trailer mostly highlights Liam Neeson and distributors Open Road are hoping they can net him an Oscar nomination for his performance.  There’s also a little bit of Carnahan’s trademark insanity on display when you see Neeson breakout the broken-bottle knuckles to fight wolves.  The trailer is selling the film as a drama but there’s definitely some fun to be had.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer who leads a cast that includes Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney, Dallas Roberts, Joe Anderson, James Badge Dale, and Nonso Anozie.  The Grey opens January 27, 2012, but there may be a brief Oscar-qualifying run in December if Open Road thinks it has a serious shot at putting Neeson in the awards race.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Grey:

A group of oil-rig roughnecks are left stranded on the sub-arctic tundra after their plane experiences a complete mechanical failure and crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. The survivors, battling mortal injuries, biting cold and ravenous hunger, are relentlessly hunted and pursued by a vicious pack of rogue wolves.

  1. It looks decent but hard to tell from that short teaser. Reminds me of that Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins movie from like ten or fifteen years ago, The Edge or something like that. Doubt someone other then The wolves are trying to kill Liam though.

  2. I want to see this, but I fear I will not be able to resist the temptation to make various (and bad) Game of Thrones references while watching it. “Uh oh, better call Jon Snow to sort things out. Looks like those wolves have Liam Neeson in a DIRE situation, amirite?!?!”

  3. the same director that said the A-TEAM was going to be as big a reboot as BATMAN with 3 planned sequels?

and this is going to be better than TOUCHING THE VOID?

    what a blowhard.

A-TEAM was a massive flop and cost Fox a ton of money.

$60 million to make and market this original storyline about workers getting picked off by wolves?? sheesh a rental at best and I like Neeson.

good luck OPEN ROAD, you’re gonna need it after this and KILLER ELITE!

  4. @ “really?” Fuck off! I will laugh SO hard when this movie will do 20 million first opening week end. Then perhaps we can hope you will shut the fuck up? We can only hope right really?

  5. I am sure this will be an entertaining film but complete crap!
Timber wolves dont hunt people, I have been around them all my
life and they are not blood thirsty killers of people!
They are shy animals and avoid people if at all possible.
Hollywood always fucks up stuff like this,if it was polar bears chasing these people that I could believe, but what the hell
    its only a film right!

  6. It’s Info like that, encourages people to keep returning to a excellent resource like this site. Keep up the great work.
