Before Hulu released this full trailer, a tease for Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale revealed what happened to Offred (Elisabeth Moss) after she made a last-second decision to return to Gilead rather than go towards freedom with her baby and Ofglen (Alexis Bledel). It was a frustrating decision, one that I wrote about in my review of the Season 2 finale, but it seems that the Hulu series is at least saving us from another season with Offred/June as an abused and beleaguered handmaid. Instead, she is seen wearing the subdued robes of a Martha.
This is more interesting for two reasons: One, she can hide here from those who are undoubtedly looking for her after she took her baby away from Gilead. Two, it was the network of Marthas that helped June make her escape — their anonymity is a kind of blessing in that way. That could also help June find her daughter, Hannah.
At least we won’t have to see June sexually assaulted again … hopefully. The show is one of the bleakest on television, something that has made it increasingly hard to watch in a world that is also feeling especially stressful and chaotic. But for the faithful, it looks like the third season will have plenty of interesting new developments for June and the other inhabitants of Gilead and beyond. And, creator Bruce Miller told THR that in Season 3 “there’s a level of triumph and [a notion of] ‘blessed be the fight.’ Certainly, we’re going to hit ups and downs, just like we did [in Season 2], but that there’s kind of a level of rebellious spirit in June that will make her more hard-charging, and the victories will be a little bit more visceral.”
Check out the new trailer below; The Handmaid’s Tale also stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O. T. Fagbenle, Max Minghella, and Samira Wiley.
