THE HANGOVER 2 Update from Director Todd Phillips

the_hangover_movie_image_bradley_cooper__ed_helms__zach_galifianakis__1_.jpgAnyone who followed the progress of director Todd Phillips The Hangover knows Warner Bros. has talked about a sequel since before the movie got released.  The story is the studio loved the footage, loved the movie, and knew they had a huge hit before the film got released.  Of course we all know what happened, as The Hangover went to become to highest grossing R rated comedy of all time, taking in almost $460 million at the worldwide box office.  That is a staggering amount of money for any film, let alone a comedy starring no movie stars.  Therefore it’s no surprise the studio has already announced a May 25th, 2011 release date for The Hangover 2.

When I spoke to Todd Phillips at the Las Vegas junket for the first film, he told me he already had an idea for the sequel, but wouldn’t give me any info on where it would take place.  And in a recent interview with EW, he pretty much told them the same thing; the only difference is he now says he’s midway through working on the script for the sequel.  He also confirms the trio of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis will be back (no surprise) and that it won’t simply rehash the stag-party-disaster formula of the first film.

“What people loved about The Hangover was not Las Vegas or the bachelor party but these three characters,” Phillips says. “I think you can take those characters and put them in other situations, and you don’t need the sell of Vegas and a bachelor party and all that other stuff.”

While the location of the chaos is clearly the big mystery of The Hangover 2, I’m going to pitch my idea one more time…a cruise ship! Think about it.  No one has done a great comedy on a cruise ship and it’s ripe with comedic possibilities. Also, it puts everyone in one location that no one can leave.  If you have an idea for the location, leave it in the comments. I’m curious who will figure it out first.

I don’t think either of the movies you two have mentioned can be considered “great” comedies

I would think a great place for the three characters would be and Beautiful lodge out in Africa. Think about it, it's a mysteriuos place that could get one into a whole lot of trouble if you don't know what you doing. The way I see it is the characters have learned a thing or two about responsability after the first film now they could only get into trouble by trying to be responsible. I would love to see the unfolding of the old fashioned stereotypical American views on a Modernised African country with the hilarious clashes of cultural behaviour and views, I would love to see Zach Galifianakis character Alan having a full go at this. ( A metaphore for change) something we are all experiencing.

If it's going to be in the States, it should be New Orleans. A) The city has unparalleled potential for shenanigans. B) The city could definitely use the investment & publicity – might make Mardis Gras 2012 the biggest ever! Snap, maybe that's what it could be – the boys go to Mardis Gras for a guys weekend.

If it's not going to be in the States, I'd suggest Tokyo. Something about these characters says that a madcap run through Japanese nightlife with the three of them would be epic.

Re the cruise ship idea – definitely has potential, and if it happens then The Lonely Island needs to do the soundtrack.

They should definitely include the 4th guy (the Groom from the original movie), since he's the only tie between the other three (aside from the adventure in the first movie). I also think they should ditch the title “hangover 2″ so as to not pigeonhole it into a similar premise. Frankly I wish they weren't making this one, so the Hangover could stand by itself as a great comedy; sequels are rarely worth the salt (except, ironically, for the #2 movies in most of the current comic book franchises, namely spiderman, x-men, and batman, all of whom had part 2's superior to their part 1's).

i'm think that the next movie should start straight after the wedding in the first one where the 4 of them are loaded after a day of celebrations. they can send doug + tracey on a cruise ship around the southern pacific, meanwhile all hell breaks loose after melissa catches stu + jade together + they have to escape her by fleeing to the ship that doug's on. phil + alan can then join them on the ship.

that would be a good sequel to a fantastic movie.
