When you sell a few million copies on DVD/Blu-ray it's impressive.  But when you sell 8.6 million - including 1.5 million Blu-rays - in just over 3 weeks, it's time to burn hundreds and drink Cristal.  And that's what everyone involved in The Hangover is probably doing right now as the smash comedy is the #1 comedy of all time on DVD.

With the crazy success of The Hangover in both theaters and on home video, it's safe to assume the sequel is a major priority for Warner Bros. It's currently scheduled for release on Memorial Day weekend 2011.  I cannot wait.  Here's the press release:

Burbank, CA, January 6, 2010 - Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' smash hit The Hangover has added another milestone to its record-breaking 2009 run.  Since its release on Blu-ray and DVD on December 15th 2009 the film has become the #1 comedy of all time on the DVD charts with combined consumer and rental sales topping 8.6 million units with 1.5 million units coming from Blu-ray purchases. Strong sales are expected to continue bringing the six-month estimate to 9.5 million units.

"We are thrilled that The Hangover is enjoying the same level of success as it had on the big screen, having become the #1 comedy of all time on DVD.  Working with a filmmaker as talented as Todd Phillips to bring this film to DVD-both for the fans who want to see it again and again, and for those who may not yet have seen it-has been a privilege," said Ron Sanders, President of Warner Home Video.

The Hangover was the box office surprise hit of 2009, earning more than $467 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time.  Currently the film is nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for a Golden Globe in the category Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.  It also received a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Comedy, and was named one of the Top Ten films of the year by AFI.

The record-breaking performance of The Hangover was one of a number of milestones reached by Warner Home Video, which remains the market share leader in Total Video sales as well as the segment Total Blu-ray for 2009.  Market share leader categories also include Theatrical Catalog Video, Family and Animation Catalog and TV on Video (DVD and BD combined).

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Legendary Pictures, a Green Hat Films Production of a Todd Phillips Movie, The Hangover, starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Heather Graham, Justin Bartha and Jeffrey Tambor.  The film is directed by Phillips from a screenplay by Jon Lucas & Scott Moore.  Todd Phillips and Dan Goldberg produced, with Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, William Fay, Scott Budnick, Chris Bender and J.C. Spink serving as executive producers.
