When you sell a few million copies on DVD/Blu-ray it’s impressive. But when you sell 8.6 million – including 1.5 million Blu-rays – in just over 3 weeks, it’s time to burn hundreds and drink Cristal. And that’s what everyone involved in The Hangover is probably doing right now as the smash comedy is the #1 comedy of all time on DVD.
Hit the jump for the press release:
With the crazy success of The Hangover in both theaters and on home video, it’s safe to assume the sequel is a major priority for Warner Bros. It’s currently scheduled for release on Memorial Day weekend 2011. I cannot wait. Here’s the press release:
Burbank, CA, January 6, 2010 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ smash hit The Hangover has added another milestone to its record-breaking 2009 run. Since its release on Blu-ray and DVD on December 15th 2009 the film has become the #1 comedy of all time on the DVD charts with combined consumer and rental sales topping 8.6 million units with 1.5 million units coming from Blu-ray purchases. “We are thrilled that The Hangover is enjoying the same level of success as it had on the big screen, having become the #1 comedy of all time on DVD. Working with a filmmaker as talented as Todd Phillips to bring this film to DVD-both for the fans who want to see it again and again, and for those who may not yet have seen it-has been a privilege,” said Ron Sanders, President of Warner Home Video.
The Hangover was the box office surprise hit of 2009, earning more than $467 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time.
