Though it was already pretty much expected, we now have confirmation from Warner Bros. that an extended edition of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on home video sometime during the fourth quarter of 2013.  The idea of extended editions for Jackson’s The Hobbit films is somewhat intriguing, though, given that the adaptation was initially expected to be two films in length before Jackson was granted permission to extend it to a full trilogy.

Hit the jump for more, including details on an “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy.

martin-freeman-the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-posterThough Jackson will be going back to do some more filming to fill out his Hobbit trilogy next year, one has to wonder just how much material can possibly be mined from The Hobbit and J.R.R. Tolkein’s appendicies.  Personally, I’d be interested in seeing a “shortened” edition once the trilogy has concluded to see how Jackson originally envisioned The Hobbit arc to play out over two films.  Nevertheless, it’s hard to complain when more time spent in Middle Earth is being promised.  The timing of the fourth quarter release of An Unexpected Journey’s extended edition is no coincidence, as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters next December.

News of the extended edition came from Warner Bros. Home Video (via Movies.com), which also announced the 2013 release of The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition.  Warner Bros. is already releasing a 3-pack Dark Knight Trilogy this December that includes Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises, but I guess they’re getting a head-start on their double-dip.  No details are given as to what this the “ultimate” collector’s edition, but I assume some limited edition packaging will be part of the deal.

The set is slated for release sometime during the third quarter of 2013, so you’ll have to decide whether you want to wait a full year to own the trilogy set or if you absolutely need it this December.  My guess is you’ll probably get more bang for your buck with the “Ultimate Collector’s Edition,” but who knows.

This home video news comes on the heels of the announcement that a 3D conversion of The Wizard of Oz is being done for a Blu-ray release later next year.  Here’s an image of the WB release calendar, via Movies.com:

  1. What could possibly be left on the cutting room floor after extending a two parter to a trilogy. It weird i was just thinking about this earlier today. Excited, been waiting almost ten years.

    • Best quotes: Batman- we know he used you, bhwsnaaired you, wouned you up up like a tin solider and turned you against Earth cry me a river.Batman- some times the old ways are bestBaman (Terry)- it’s not going to work, you don’t know your way around here, things have changedBatman- are criminals still superstious and cowardly?old Bruce- yep *everyone turns? and stares*Batman- good enough for me

  2. I don’t usually watch four hour movies, but, when I do, I prefer Peter Jackson’s extended editions.

    Stay nerdy my friends …

  3. i hope nolan realizes the demand for more batman and he unveils additional footage and makes extended cuts for at least one of the movies in the trilogy…throw us a damn bone you know you’re going to clean up.

  4. Great news! We had fun with the extended editions releasing before the theatrical sequels with LOTR. Had a party and projected it. Will have to do it again! Keep in mind that the first Hobbit movie was already basically cut to length before deciding on splitting the rest into two movies rather than one. It may be we only get a significantly extended version for the first movie.

  5. Extended editions should be the ONLY editions released!

I can’t believe people bought both versions of LOTR, and then did the same all over again on the bluray! :-O

I only have the extended editions of LOTR but even I know now that a box set of all 6 extended films will eventually come out, and I’m betting scenes filmed for the Hobbit will be incorporated into LOTR. ie.. Radagast the brown, who in LOTR when Gandalf sends that moth to bring the Eagle to isengards, I heard the moth went to Radagast who sent the eagle.
Also, the scene in Fellowship when Bilbo finds the ring, its Ian Holm playing young Bilbo, that will obviously need to change for continuity’s sake.

  6. Don’t worry squires, you won’t be getting no extra material what what. I don’t believe in cutting one second out of my films. That’s why the Dark Knight Fails is 14 hours long when it should have been 30. Bob’s your uncle and all that.

  7. So what do they intend to do in 2014 with the Hobbit Part 2? Rush the Extended Cut for that film to stores ASAP in order to get it out before Part 3 hits in July?

I promise you. The Summer 2014 for The Hobbit 3 is not going to stick and the film will be kicked back to December 2014.

  8. I’ll be ‘borrowing’ TDKR until the end of 2013. Why don’t they just get the ultimate edition out for this Christmas?

  9. I welcome the additional footage of Bilbo waking up early, maybe doing his hair, going to the toilet. All my questions will be answered. Thanks Peter Jackson for filling the gaps left by Tolkien!

  10. Блин к сожалению не силен в английском:(
