Comic-Con 2012 is now less than a week away, and we can rest assured knowing that plenty of geek-related goodness is sure to follow all throughout next week and weekend.  Two of the most highly anticipated panels come via Warner Bros.’ three-hour block next Saturday: Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.  It’s a curious pairing, as del Toro was previously set to direct The Hobbit before bowing out due to increasing delays (he’s still credited as a screenwriter on the two-part adaptation).  One assumes there’s no bad blood between the two visionary directors, and now a pair of absolutely gorgeous Comic-Con posters for their films have landed online.

We’ve previously seen posters for The Hobbit, but that doesn’t mean this Gandalf-enhanced one sheet isn’t any less exciting.  This is the first poster we’ve seen for del Toro’s Pacific Rim, and it promises that this is one big movie.  Hit the jump to check out the posters (which will be available to fans at Comic-Con), and be sure to come back next week for our extensive Comic-Con coverage including full recaps of these two highly anticipated panels.  Comic-Con 2012 runs from July 12 – 15th.

Here’s the synopsis for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey:

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Here’s the synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

    Good god!!

    That jaeger (mech) is freaking M A S S I V E.

Also, nice to have painted or drawn artwork for the poster.

  • Sugreev2001

Pacific Rim’s poster looks similar to the Halo game series, something Guillermo has confessed to be a fan of.

    • Norm

What? How? I gotta be honest, I don’t see anything in there that reminds me of Halo. Is it because the robot has an orange visor? That’s not really a feature that’s distinctly Halo.

      • Sugreev2001

only the way the helmet is designed.Take it easy, man.

      • Yu Sheng Wu

I don’t see any problems with an orange visor…I’m just curious about how the robot would move. Would it have the CGI grace of the boxing robots in Real Steel or would it be the fast, near incomprehensible CGI mess of Michael Bay’s Transformers.

  • Nomis1700

    Beautiful Hobbit poster!

At first I thought, what’s so big about Pacific Rim? But then I saw the tiny humans!!!! It’s effing HUGE!!!

  • Norm

I can’t wait to see more on Pacific Rim, those of you going to see the panel be sure to leak some photos for me!

  • cartouche

Im excited for Robot Jox 2.. I mean Pacific Rim

    • MisterEd

Funny… when Robot Jox came out, I thought it was ripping off VOLTRON. Then you got the Power Rangers who also took a swing at this concept.

If anything, PACIFIC RIM is probably more inspired by that old show “Johnny Sokko And His Flying Robot (GIANT ROBOT)”.

I don’t think the people behind said film are hiding it’s Japanese influences either.

IMO, the film REAL STEEL is more like ROBOT JOX.

    • CanIHaveASlice?

Remember when the bad guy uses the mirror to reflect the laser straight back to the good guy? Classic robot on robot action right there.

      • Yu Sheng Wu

Del Toro himself said that it was going to be an ode to giant monster movies. So…I guess he’s not going to hide the influences, I’m thinking…Godzilla cameo?

  • spindoc

it seems like it’s always a “washed up pilot.”

    cue the redemption music.

  • !_!

is it me or does the robot look kind of similar to zaku model from gundam?

  • Phil Beta

That Hobbit poster is gorgeous. Any chance of a high-res sample?

That Pacific Rim robot, looks real badass considering the apparent size. Think it can kick a fantasy Japanese mecha ass?

    • Yu Sheng Wu

True…I have no complaints with the Jaeger (Pacific Rim Robot) so far…I’m just wondering if it’s bulk can handle giant monsters.

  • Dare Devil

Holy Mother of all “MONSTERS”….. now I want a trailer

  • Crimson

I curious about what these Sea monsters will look like.

i wish a film these days could be made without the words post-apocolpytic, zombie, and in the future.

Not knocking any film. Just wishing for more fare a bit more down to earth. There are plenty of great stories with their feet on the ground. I think it takes a more talented filmmaker to pull it off, unfortunately.

Personally I think the Jaeger looks a bit like Ultraman. I’d also say the plot sounds like a tribute to Ultraman :-P Check the wiki, you’ll see what I mean ;-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraman

  • Bappers84

Personally I think the Jaeger (Pacific Rim robot) looks a bit like Ultraman. I’d even go as far as saying the film sounds a bit like a tribute to Ultraman!

P.S. Sorry if this ends up as a double post, having a few IE issues…
