First Trailer and Poster for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

by     Posted 2 years, 251 days ago

Finally, the first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been released. Peter Jackson returns to direct the adventure of young Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) who sets out on an adventure with a company of dwarves. This trailer really is like a warm embrace from an old friend. While most trailers this far out from release show very little in the way of footage, Jackson shows off a great deal. Freeman looks excellent as Bilbo, the dwarves are fantastic (they sing!), and the tag brought a big smile to my face. While a year is a very long time to wait, this snippet is a swell look into the wonder to come.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, and Stephen FryThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hobbit:

“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

    Nice family film with dwarfs

Looks Amazing! Sent a shiver down my spine! So glad that Peter Jackson ended up directing, I love guillermo del toro but it would have had a different feel, perhaps unlike Lord of the Rings and I really didn’t want that. STOKED!

That. Was. EPIC!!!!! I can’t believe that I am saying this, but I think this surpassed my anticipation for The Dark Knight Rises by just a little bit.

Warm Fuzzies, can’t imagine what we will do until next December. A Hobbit reread is in order, of course, and subsequent re-immersion in what will be one of the most anticipated films in cinematic history. And this time, Mr. Del Toro will lend us a bit of his imagination in the crafting of all things Murky and Wondrous.

I just shed a tear of happiness:))) thank you Peter Jackson

    Great Job!

@daveo, you to know that del toro isn’t directing this right? that being said, its going to be amazing, i can’t wait to be fully immersed in middle earth again

  • wtff

This just made me smile :)

  • Radical11

tj I think what daveo meant is Del Toro while involved with the movie helped craft and imagine all the effects and monsters and such and later after Peter Jackson took over it was said that Del Toro’s ideas and interpretations would be used in the film especially all the work he did creating the look of the Dragon.

    • Banekilla

I hope you are right, but I don´t think so. I´ve read the description of del Toros dragon and it looks like nothing we have seen before. Please Pete use the designs or part of the designs of del Toro. I love his monsters. As long as those designs still have middle earth dna and could exists in the hobbit it would be awesome to see some of the stuff del Toro came up with.

  • junierizzle

Looks cool but I wish Del Toronto would have stayed on as director.

The broadest smile just paralyzed my face and chills ran through me.

So generous with footage! Plus, debuting music at this stage is almost unheard of. A brand new theme for the dwarves that sets a new tone. Love it, personally.

One obvious issue is the effects are barely started so we don’t get to see the cool creatures (expect in small part) or the more interesting locales. It leaves the impression of something more simple than it will be. I’m not complaining though! There will be plenty of time to wow would be audiences with effects closer to release.

Nearly wept. The good kind of weeping, too.

  • jonathan

It was good….but not as great as the Dark Knight Rises….

    • Pockets

Haters be damned. Batman looks like ass compared to this. “So they’re just going to be walking? I like Kevin Smith so much I have to attempt to steal his unfunny material.” This was the best trailer ever…without a doubt, without question. Game over.

  • dogg

    Safety not guaranteed!

  • yOYo

So…All they’re just gonna be walking all throughout the movie..?

    • Michael

That’s basically what happened throughout the entire duration of the first Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie. It paid off pretty well. I am sure this one will do the same if indeed it’s just walking.

  • excpired

A lot of the dwarfs seem a bit off. Maybe its just me though.

Peter Jackson at work! ( I’m so sorry for you Luca$ & Bay)

  • Sugreev2001

I’ve seen the trailer 5 times, and it sends chills down my spine each and every time.I think I’ll be in a trance when I see the movie in theaters next year.

  • Rick Roll

Looks so cheap, like a BBC or Sky One production.

@YoYo – your name fits. There was a lot more than walking in the trailer. Plus, I appreciate a trailer that teases without giving away all the action. Just the Jackson-esque visuals, Middle Earthean music, and Gollum seals the deal for me!

  • J.R.

well………… at least this will push WB to re-release the Blurays in on disc format and not the atrocious 2 disc extended cut…… looks good but i am not a LOTR fan…

  • Stephens

I just got goosebumps for literally 30 seconds after I finished watching the trailer, looks amazing and I can’t wait.

  • manueru

I want to watch it now! And there is still a whole year until next December, shit ;(

    • Joe

you and the rest of us! :(

  • Jason

This looks like it’s gonna be a great movie but I can’t agree with everybody gushing over it. It doesn’t show us anything we haven’t already seen in LOTR. And yes, I’ve read the book. Again, not that I don’t like what I see but it’s nothing new.

  • James

AMAAAAZIINGGG AAAAHHHH!!!!! Watching Gandalf Yield his staff and sword Walking through the darkness IS SO EPIC ! I can’t wait OMG!

  • Jay-Me-Dee

I enjoyed the trailer. It felt familiar. It also didn’t seem to be bastardising the novel in any way (yet, though I felt some of the additions/omissions to the LOTR trilogy were acceptable).

2012 is a huge movie year for me (and others) with The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Man of Steel, Spiderman and Prometheus, but I think that this trailer made me “feel” the best. Tolkien feels like an old friend, and Peter Jackson has done him justice in the past.

  • Wladi

    T-H-A-T W-A-S A-W-E-S-O-M-E…. O_O

  • Wladi

The dwarfs chant is rapturous…so far this is the best trailer for a comming movie IMO…. O_O

  • bill

Who thinks they’ll end up releasing a version of LOTR on Blu Ray or DVD or years down the line where they replace the scene of young Ian Holm finding the ring in moria with Martin Freeman finding the ring?

  • Michael Horne

    Quite simply? Now THAT’S a poster :-)

  • Wladi

Si no sabes inglés no pierdas el tiempo usando el google translator u otra basura similar porque no se te entiende nada buey…

  • Darth Bob

    For. The. Win.

As long as they don’t mince it like they did LOTR, it’ll be great. Loving the chant, but really hoping they didn’t skip Beorn… that would be almost as bad (if not worse) than Bombadil.

  • Baggins

The visuals are great, but who the hell is the human? I’ve read The Hobbit just about once a year since I was 12 and I remember no Human at Bagend. Also I hear that they’ve added some superfluous feminine role to appease the female activists. That’s bullshit. I still liked the animated one that was done in the early 80′s or late 70′s or whatever. That was the shit.

  • terry

Next year will an epic time for movies and tech.
The new Hobbits, Dark Knight, Avengers,Superman, iPad 3, Apple tv sets, iPhone 5 an the North American release of the psp vita.

  • noodles

Don’t any of you ding-dongs realize that Galadriel does NOT appear in the Hobbit? Niether Does aragorn, frodo, or legolas, this is just cheap commercialism. Not to mention that splitting the movie into two seperate one is also ridiculous……….

    • a nonny mouse

Whatever, noodle head. If you don’t like it you don’t have to see it so just be quiet. Better yet, try to make your own and see if you can do better.

      • noodles

Dudes, I’m just saying – if you’re going to make the Hobbit, then make the Hobbit, not an over-blown Syfy rendition…….and I’m a right wing conservative but even I have a limit! the Hobbit is a children’s story, ie., one of the dwarves explains that he invents golf by knocking a goblin’s head named Golfimbul into a hole!

      • Ender Wiggin

LOL “noodle head”!!! Jackson took a lot of grief for making the LOTR too close to the source material. Now numb skulls like noodle head will need to opine that Jackson commits a sin as he adds some stuff into the movie. He is right that The Hobbit is a children’s book, but this is exactly why things needed to be tweaked a bit, so the movie could be more mature. If you want to watch a child’s movie, go watch The Phantom Menace. Appealing to children didn’t work out so well in that case, did it?!………BTW this trailer was gnarly!!!

whatever noodle head, we love it, to those who doesn’t love it, just ~ out of here okay ~ just don’t spoil our mood… i still love it!!! it is an artistic movie & to those who doesnt know the meaning of artistic, they will never understand TLOTR/Tolkien’s…… :D Lottsss of Luv Luv Luv……. :*

      • noodles

You guys are soooooo hostile! If the movie was artistic they could draw from the silmarillion which has dozens of stories. As it is, this is just cheap commercialism! Do the story of Beren and Luthien! The Children of Hurin! Of Earendil! anybody! just stay true to the books!

      • ender wiggin

So the only way a story can be “artistic” is if it’s of the obscure category? Noodle head, you’re the type of guy who won’t allow himself to be satisfied with something if it’s liked by too many people who don’t live up to your standards of “geek-hipster”. The only reason you’re delving into The Silmarillion and it’s lesser know plots is because it make’s you feel smarter than you really are. You’re really just kind of a douche. I get the sense that you would have the same type of criticism for any well anticipated movie…….even if The Silmarillion was to be adapted.

  • Joe

My oh my. How much I missed this world that Tolkien created and Jackson illustrated.

If only this was another trilogy…

  • janko

This trailer is pure torture…….I want it now!!!

  • Michael Horne

Look at those production values… it’s like the entire LOTR crew never left New Zealand. Just beautifully shot, beautifully scored. And that very end bit with the well-known creepy character? Chills down my spine.

  • Rosa Perrin

I am sooo glad it´s coming out!!! And that it´s Peter Jackson! His movies especially the Lord Of the Rings are the BEST!!!!

  • Charlie

I just got a detention for telling someone that they look like red leiceter cheese-.-
