The first clip from writer/director Andrew Niccol’s The Host featuring stars Saoirse Ronan and Max Irons has been released online. The Host was author Stephenie Meyer’s 2008 follow-up to her hit Twilight franchise, and details the story of an alien race called Souls that take over the inhabitants of Earth. At the center of the story is Ronan’s character Melanie, who fights back against the Soul, called Wanderer, that takes over her body. While not as hotly anticipated as the Twilight adaptations were, The Host bolsters an impressive cast including Ronan, Irons, Diane Kruger, Jake Abel, William Hurt, Frances Fisher, and Boyd Holbrook. The clip shows what seems to be the first encounter between Ronan’s Melanie and Irons’ character Jared, before Melanie has been taken over by Wanderer. Melanie and Jared don’t get off to the best start, coming to physical blows at one point, but their relationship is a huge focal point in the book. Telling from the trailer and images that have been released, the world of this Meyer’s adaptation seems much more dire and apocalyptic. I have the utmost confidence in Ronan with her great track record in Atonement and Hanna, so we can only hope that Melanie is a bit more active and interesting than Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan. I would settle for just less mopey.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Host:
THE HOST is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.
The Host opens March 29th.
