Hulk to be a Motion Capture Performance in THE AVENGERS

Here’s some cool news for everyone that’s anticipating The Avengers.  Mark Ruffalo has revealed that unlike the previous Hulk movies that featured the creature as an all CGI creation, Ruffalo will actually be playing the Hulk in The Avengers as he’s going to do the performance through motion-capture performance.   We’ve seen the technology used in such films as Lord of the Rings and Avatar, and it’ll be interesting to see a Hulk that is an actor’s creation and not made in some computer.  Hit the jump to read Ruffalo’s quotes about playing the Hulk and Bruce Banner.

When Vulture asked Rufffalo about his role as the Hulk in The Avengers, the actor said:

“I’m really excited. No one’s ever played the Hulk exactly, they’ve always done CGI.  They’re going to do the Avatar stop-action, stop-motion capture. So I’ll actually play the Hulk. That’ll be fun.”

Ruffalo also spoke about playing the role of Bruce Banner.  He seems to be excited about the opportunity and said: “I really love the first TV version of it, the Bill Bixby one.  I’m gonna shoot for that a little bit. He was an everyman in it. He’s always on the run and trying to find love. It’s really a sympathetic character, before he turns into the Hulk and fucks everything up.”

The Avengers will be directed by Joss Whedon and also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner.  Filming is set to begin in February.

  1. oh well no rhythm and hues this time but who knows maybe this new rendition will be accepted im up for it.. who doesnt love o’l jade jaws

  2. Yeah The Hulk’s character will probably literally appear 2 times in this entire movie. Once during introductions, once at the big fight scene. The rest will be all Mark Ruffalo, which is okay by me because I hate Hulk.

    • True. Maybe it’s the first time the actual actor who’s playing the Hulk has got to mo-cap his own part. Lee was a real douche to do it himself instead of Eric Bana; kind of makes you wonder who he thinks he is, and what he thinks of actors.

  3. I don’t think Ruffalo understands that just because it’s motion capture doesn’t mean the Hulk isn’t going to be a CGI creation. The Hulk will be totally CGI no matter what. The performance will be motion capture. Meaning most, not all, of the physical movement and facial expression that bring the intricate little nuances to make the hulk feel more realistic is all that will be him.

That would be like saying Gollum, in “Tthe Lord of the Rings” trilogy, wasn’t an all CGI or computer graphic Image. That it was all Andy Serkis. Making the incredibly artistic and difficult work, that the extremely talented CG artists do, meaningless. Thus minimalizing their value and contribution to the end product as a whole. When without them all you’d have is a body builder running around with green makeup all over him. Not to demean Lou by any means. it’s just that these are different times where technology plays a much more important role in the making of such films these days.
