New Images from THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Showcase the Entire Cast

     September 19, 2013

A batch of new images from director Francis Lawrence’s sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has landed online, giving us a closer look at the film’s large ensemble cast.  The story finds President Snow (Donald Sutherland) trying to crush a budding rebellion that was ignited by Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) actions in the previous film, as the 75th Hunger Games (aka Quarter Quell) finds past victors competing against each other.  I’m eager to see what Lawrence brings to the table as the new overseer of the franchise (he’s also directing Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2), and the previous trailers have been promising.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam HemsworthSam ClaflinJena MaloneElizabeth BanksWoody Harrelson Philip Seymour HoffmanStanley TucciJeffrey Wright, and Amanda Plummer.  The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens November 22nd.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire:

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark.  Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts.  Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

As someone who didn’t like the book and wasn’t all that impressed with the first movie, I’m strangely excited about seeing this.

Shame the trailers and info about the movie have to give away that she competes again. One of the great things about reading the books with no spoilers was not knowing that she’d be a participant. The setup was that she was exempt from competing again and would be coaching two new folks (who could potentially include her sister and Gale). The intro was pretty suspenseful and the reveal of the quarter quell and exactly how it would work (including whether Haymitch would go back in instead of Peeta) was well done in the book, not really the opportunity to do it in the movie.

Anyway, lots of potential to make a movie that tops the first one, the source material is strong and doesn’t have the difficulty of lots of time with Katniss by herself, sections of the book where the narrative is all hearing what she’s thinking.
