Lionsgate has released the first trailer for director Francis Lawrence‘s (Water for Elephants) sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.  The darkness and melancholy of the first film has only intensified, but this trailer only tells half the story.  We’re shown the victors’ tour, and how President Snow (Donald Sutherland) is trying to tear down the hope-inspiring image of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) before killing her.  Only at the end of the trailer, do we hear about the second part of the story, which is the “Quarter Quell”, a special Hunger Games where past winners will be forced to fight to the death.  I assume they left this out because it’s the more effects-heavy part of the story, and that footage is moving through post-production.

The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam HemsworthSam ClaflinElizabeth BanksWoody HarrelsonDonald Sutherland, Philip Seymour HoffmanJena MaloneJeffrey Wright, and Amanda Plummer.  The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens on November 22nd in IMAX and traditional theaters.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire:

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

Damn. this is the best trailer this year by far. and it didn’t even have any action in it.

  • Tyne

This looks amazing!! Really excited about this movie!

  • Deadpool

The Teaser started out strong but finished a little weak IMO.

Still I can’t wait to see it. Catching Fire was my favorite book in the series. Hopefully the next trailer will reveal some of the 75th Hunger Games.

    • Zero

But why spoil the arena scenes? That’s dumb, this trailer was fine. They showed enough.

      • Kevin

I’m fine with them not spoiling any of the games, but the trailer definitely seemed to struggle to fill the 2 minutes.

  • Zero

Well this just looks bloody fantastic!! Holy shit!!! November 22nd hurry up!!

    About the Quarter Quell:
“I assume they left this out because it’s the more effects-heavy part of the story, and that footage is moving through post-production.”
That’s one reason. Another is that they’re doing the same thing with the first one by not revealing too much of the actual Games in the marketing so the audience can be surprised by the events as they unfold.

    • Kevin

Hopefully they don’t show it in the next trailer… boy will your face be red! While this is only a first teaser and there is a strong possibility they’ll want to keep the setpieces mostly un-spoiled, this movie was also made on a pretty fast track, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was mainly due to the lack of completed footage.

  • Albert

Wow! This might actually be better than the first movie. I’m gonna be looking forward to it really.

  • Keegan

i don’t think i’ve ever seen a TRAILER with a weak final act… It started off so good looking then just finished like it’s going to be the same dead average material they farted out for the first movie

    • Travis

You do realize you are judging an entire movie based off of a teaser trailer right? Basically, you just saw 2 minutes of the first hour of a 2.5 hour film and you and half of this board are busting the movie for it. I find it hilarious how much people try and judge everything off of a trailer anymore.

I guess they should market like Man of Steel where only knowledgeable fans have any idea what is going on.

      • Keegan

nope judging it off the first movie and the book buddy. decent source material to make a formidable prediction

  • Michael Horne

That’s a way to do a trailer with a difference. Almost understated. Pleased to see that the aesthetic from the first movie has been carried over by the new director. Lawrence always worth seeing and great to see Seymour Hoffman giving a nuanced performance already. Looking forward to this.

  • Yep

If I remember correctly, they didn’t show much of the Games in the trailers for the first film either. I think it’s a good strategy to go, but of course in the next trailers they going to have to up the stakes and make it clear that there’ll be another Games where Katniss and co. will have to compete and show at least the countdown towards it, since not everyone know about the plot of the second book.
Anyways, I liked the trailer, the aesthetic seems to be as bleak and it doesn’t seem much has changed, which is good. Looking forward to more Hoffman.

  • Drake

Looks great! The feeling from the first carries over. The trailer doesn’t show much from the last 2/3 of the movie, but thats okay. It perfectly sets up the situation for the remainder of the movie. So excited, it looks amazing! No worries.

  • HeSaidSheSaidReviewSite

Sutherland is a true bastard in this role. Well-done sir.

  • Grayson

I like it when the trailers don’t include anything from the ends of movies. I hate that trailers seem to need to have climaxes. Good teaser.

  • Christina

It looks so good and I loved that it don’t show anything about that Quarter Quell. I read the book but still I want to be surprised when I see the movie. Catching Fire is my favorite book of mother trilogy and can’t wait to see it!

  • cocaine_heart

I love the look and feel of it so far!

  • Dylan d

I loved it, best trailer ive seen in a while, makes me think they can easily top the first film, and yeah even without action, it looks like quality!

  • ken

    Looking good!

  • ctyal2

Read the first book: thought it was terrible.
Watched the first movie: better than the book, but still rather poor.
But this trailer actually looks really good. It looks far more interesting than the first film.

  • PJ Sleepwalker

I’m sorry but I just don’t feel like I’m part of the same group on this one. While the trailer makes the film look epic in scope and idea, I just have this odd feeling that it won’t be anywhere as quality as the first film was. In about five years, people are going to say it was a decent follow-up but that the first film remains the best of the bunch.

  • TheRealBukzit

November seems a century and feel like i’ll be a very old man watching young Katniss catching fire.
All movies trailers should be like this one, teasing people only with speech
