Confirmed: Jennifer Lawrence Will Play Katniss Everdeen in THE HUNGER GAMES

Jennifer Lawrence HUNGER GAMES slice

Last week, we reported that Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence had been offered the coveted-role of Katniss Everdeen in Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games.  We explained that even though the character is 16-years-old in the book, Lionsgate wanted to cast older because they believed it was easier to find a bankable lead actor in his early 20s to play opposite Lawrence.

Now The Wrap is reporting, to the surprise of no one, that Lawrence has taken the role.  I haven’t read the books yet but I think Lawrence is a good actress and I’m glad to see her get such a high-profile role. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the book.  The Hunger Games is set to be released on March 23, 2012.

Here’s the synopsis for The Hunger Games:

In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

Yeah – I didn’t need you to tell me you haven’t read the books – I can tell.

    • Matt Goldberg

      How’s that?

      • Tey

Because Katniss is 15 years old Matt, simple as Fuck :)

      • Matt Goldberg

Oh no. Now it’s ruined. There’s no way Jennifer Lawrence could play a teenager.

Alex Pettyfer will probably get the male lead even though he is a horrible actor. Worst part of I Am Number 4 and I heard he was terrible in Beastly. But he’ll probably get the part just because hes “in demand” and he’ll look good next to Lawrence

Excellent! Anybody who has seen Winter’s Bone knows she can play a teenager and pull off just the right amount of attitude.

    I admit she isn’t my first pick… and I haven’t seen Winter’s Bone yet…

… But makes me incredibly happy with her casting is that they went with talent first and looks second! (*coughs*suckitTwilight*coughs*)

The girl is a freakin’ Oscar nominee! So yeah… she’ll definitely make an awesome Katniss! =)

WORD. Jennifer Lawrence will be badass in this role. EXCITED!

  • O.R.

Well, she doesn’t have the looks, but from what I’ve heard, her role in Winter’s Bone makes her a perfect Katniss. I hope they don’t choose to pretend she’s an underfed teenager and just go with “slightly older that in the books”, or “untold age”. The older age factor might allow them to gore up a little more the action scenes. All in all, I think that she’ll be fine as long as she loses some pounds for the sake of the character.

Oh, and could it be possible for them not to cast Pettyfer either way? Please?

Sigh. Terrible. TERRIBLE. I was extremly disappointed with the cast. Swear and yell if you will but come on. She looks like a wannabe Paris Hilton on too many pills. And she is not thin enough for the part. Im sorry to say but that is how i feel.
