The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 Trailer Description; 30 Capitol Gallery Images

     July 25, 2014

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 may not have a Hall H panel, but Lionsgate certainly went all out ensuring the film still had a presence at San Diego Comic-Con this year.  In conjunction with Samsung, Lionsgate set up the The Capitol Gallery at the Samsung Galaxy Experience right inside the Hard Rock Hotel’s Lounge 207.

It’s a small space, but there’s a lot going on it.  You can grab something to eat at Peeta’s Bakery, take a picture with the Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Johanna (Jena Malone) holograms, a Peacekeeper and some Capitol citizens as well.  There’s also t-shirt making, a quiz that tells you which District you belong in, a booth where you can etch your name into a Samsung Galaxy case and more.  But that’s not even the best of it; on the second floor of the Hard Rock, there’s also an elaborately dressed screening room of sorts where you can catch the very first The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 trailer early on a Galaxy Tab S.  Hit the jump for our trailer description and some photos from the event.

the-hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1-teaser-trailerThe minute long trailer kicks off with a shot of a hovercraft landing in District 13.  Inside, we find Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), discussing Katniss’ purpose in the rebellion.  Plutarch insists, “Listen to me.  No one else can do this, but her.”  Coin disagrees.  “She won’t be able to handle it.  The games destroyed her.”  We get a quick glimpse of Natalie Dormer as Cressida rocking her half shaved head adorned with tattoos as well as Liam Hemsworth looking super serious as Gale while Plutarch continues, “We need to unite these people out there.  She’s the face of the rebellion.”  Just as he says, “They’ll follow her,” that’s exactly what happens.  We get a shot of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) from behind as she walks through the dejected District 13 community and slowly, they start to converge around her.

From there it’s the quick-cut montage format and there are loads of striking visuals in the mix.  The standouts include a giant Mockingjay symbol mown into a field that President Snow doesn’t appreciate and, my personal favorite, a shot of a slew of rebels barreling through a forest, some getting shot down while others leap up and scale trees.  As we near the end of the brief piece, the pace slows and we focus on a rather young District 13 citizen.  He asks Katniss, “Are you fighting, Katniss?  Are you here to fight with us?”  She replies, “I am. I will,” and that’s when we finally get a close-up on our heroine.

Lionsgate has done it yet again; this is an incredibly strong teaser trailer.  Per usual, it’s not just about showing you the world, characters and some flashy visuals, but rather about stitching the narrative together in a way that pulls you into the material and makes you feel part of the chaos.

If you’re a Hunger Games fan and in the San Diego area, it’s well worth standing on the line to walk through the experience.  Sure, the teaser will eventually hit the web, but even if you’re in no rush to see that, the exhibit itself is particularly well done and worth checking out.  It’s open from 11am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday.
