New Image from THE HUNGER GAMES Shows Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson Preparing for the Opening Ceremonies

Lionsgate seems to be taking a piecemeal approach to marketing the highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games. We’ve seen a few images here and there over the past few months, and this morning the studio has released a new image giving us a peek into one of the book’s more famous scenes. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are sporting their best future costumes as they ready themselves for the opening ceremonies of The Hunger Games. Their wardrobe is designed to be reminiscent of coal, and the costume department looks to have done a fine job here. We also get a tiny peek at Lenny Kravtiz’s Cinna, as he’s holding a flame curiously close to Lawrence and Hutcherson’s costumes. The film is poised to be a monster hit, and a screenwriter is already hard at work on the sequel Catching Fire, so expect Hunger Games mania to set in come springtime.

Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland. The Hunger Games opens March 23rd.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hunger Games:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 16 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following.

  1. Monster hit? Based on what? The marketing? Not trying to be ‘that guy’, but I think a little more criticism and less campaigning here would help these adaptations become a little better than they have been lately.

The director is shit, the books are poorly-written, and (true) not nearly as popular as you’ve been led to believe. Think the Americanized ‘Girl With A Dragon Tattoo’, only a lot more disastrous. This isn’t Harry Potter, this isn’t Twilight, hell, it’s not even Final Destination. Fact.

    • Sure, the movies are not yet proven, so I agree the hype should be toned down a little, though I anticipate the first movie to be decent, at least. However, I think your criticism of the books is a little harsh. Sure, the author isn’t the most talented, but she creates characters that truly grow and change because of their circumstances, something that has been lacking in other novels and film adaptations. If the movies can really capture this element I think they will be pretty good.

    • I’ll set aside the Final Destination comment for a moment to focus on Gary Ross being a “shit director”. What planet do you live on? Gary Ross has directed two movies: Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. Both have received critical acclaim (Seabiscuit was nominated for Best Picture). Maybe if they got some of the Final Destination or Twilight directors, you’d be more impressed. I’ll take the guy with two very different, visually stunning films under his belt.

  2. Whether or not I should say “fortunately” or “unfortunately” in concerns to me having not read these books remains to be seen…but either way…I am actually psyched about this movie.

Hope I dont hafta psyche myself out after seeing it.

  3. The outfits are cool looking. I’ll be seeing this movie but knowing what happens at the end is disappointing. I know the author did it to make a trilogy (or more?) but it makes the story a cheat. Unless they change the ending so only one survives and kill the romance crap in the bud, it may not be as popular as suposed.

    • Yes the book is the first of a trilogy. Why would you change the ending and complete story line? Would you ave preferred thy stopped after the first Harry Potter move by having him kill Voldemort in the end of the in the Sorcerer’s Stone? If you haven’t read the rest of the novels then I suggest you do so, and if you don’t want to then don’t go see the movie as the writer and director have already been picked up for Catching Fire (the sequel) and no doubt, if these succeed (more than likely even if they really don’t) the third book, Mockingjay, will be picked up as well.

    • Wow. That was a spoiler if I’ve ever seen one. I’m not a Hunger Games fan, but I was planning on seeing the movie at some point. Thanks for completely ruining the ending, you piece of *****!

    • Matthew I have to give it to you for spoiling the end. I like these books and I plan on seeing the movie, but now I wish I hadn’t so I could have you, a nobody, a spec of dirt, ruin it for ME. You’re input and your opinion are sacred. You strike me as someone who has never been smacked in the face before. If only the opportunity presented itself I’d be happy to do you the honor. Just a gentle smack in that pretty little mouth. You’re welcome boy.

  4. I for one did enjoy the books, and know many others that did as well. And yes, the author was by no means an outstanding one, she definitely wasn’t the worst I have ever read and a far cry better than Stephanie Meyer.
But I think you’re missing the point, the hype for this movie isn’t completely deserved, but, because of it people have actually gotten out and read these books, and in this day and age ANY excuse to get the masses reading as opposed to constantly using their eyes to soak up the dribble on TV is ok in my book.
Having said that I am excited for the movie and hope it does justice to it’s literary counterpart, but I refrain from getting my hopes too high because let’s face it, book to movie adaptations are usually lacking in the character development aspect you get from the novels.

    • Yeah, the author is getting way too much credit for her ripoff of Battle Royale. The first book is OK due mostly to that plagiarism, but by the time you get to the third it’s a incoherent mess. Collins is laughably out of her depth the second she ventures out of her game arena and applies her naive ideas of warfare to the greater world. With such a huge pool of superior writers to choose from it’s a shame we’re stuck with this garbage.

  5. @Blob Director is Shit really?

yeah i guess his 4 oscar nominations mean nothing

his last 2 films combined equal 10 oscar nominations – so him and his team more time than not deliver the goods

  6. You know something is getting pretty huge in popularity when the negative people start coming out of the wood works to “send there best”.

I think its pretty awful to tell someone how excited to be. In comparison to every other movie coming out from now until April this is the most interesting and unique thing for most of us! Its fine if you don’t get the hype. That doesn’t mean other people should adjust there expectations!

    • Finally. Some real words of wisdom. I know you can never expect the movie to be as good as the book, but I hope this is NOT the case. I hope that the movie is every droplet as awesome as the books.

  7. I think this is going to be a good movie and for those that don’t agree and say this movie will suck just keep your comments to yourself no one is telling you to read anything related to the movie or forcing you to go watch it when it comes out.

  8. People wrongly insist that this is a Battle Royale rip-off but in fact it’s actually a Running Man rip-off (a much older movie). Also, movies are made from popular books because there is already a guaranteed audience. Simple as that.

  9. Honestly, i do not understand why people are making a big uproar on how this book is awful. We all know that when an adaptation of a book is turned into a movie adaptation, there will always be contravercy. What my quam is is that everybody is not only knocking down the book but anything that has to do with it. The book is not that bad. Maybe the develpoment of it was alittle rocky, but as you progress thoughout the series you start to feel what the characters are feeling. You have to give that to collins, and honestly you fly through the books. All I’m trying to say is, everybody does this before a new movie series comes out; even the harry potter series. Before we jump the gun, lets wait until it actually comes out.
