Teaser Trailer for THE HUNGER GAMES

     August 28, 2011

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the film adaptation of The Hunger Games.  The movie is set in the future in the ruins of what was once North America and is now known as “Panem”.  The story centers on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman who must survive a televised fight to the death between her and teenagers from other the other districts of Panem. You won’t really get any of that from this teaser trailer.  You won’t get much of anything except Katniss running through the woods, dodging fireballs, shooting an arrow, and a really good look at the logo.  This is not a movie that sells itself and there are plenty of folks thinking “Oh, great.  Another Twilight mixed with second-rate Battle Royale.”  They need to be convinced or at least intrigued.  This teaser plays only to the fans and as someone who enjoyed the book, even I was underwhelmed.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), the film also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland star.  The Hunger Games opens on March 23, 2012.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hunger Games:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.  Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy.  If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

To be honest, i would have rather had nothing. They should have just waited until they can give a REAL trailer.

That was one of the worst teasers in recent memory. I am a fan of the books and this makes me very worried about the film.

  • LiamH

Yeap it felt like I was watching Twilight, I expected Edward jump out at some point.

    • alize

      i felt the same way

Like The Dark Knight Rises teaser, this teaser doesn’t “tease” me as much as I expected. It also looks like something that fans could put together (without Jennifer Lawrence in the role, of course). I’m not saying it’s “amateurish” — it just doesn’t give off a high-caliber, big-budget vibe.

This is going to be the worst movie ever. Terrible adaptation. Completely uncompelling. Horrible acting. A terrible, Oscar-nominated director with a terrible, Oscar-winning 2nd unit director. A horrendous writer of well-received intelligent thrillers. Academy-award winning composers. Academy-award nominated cinematographer.

Based on the 10 second clip with no character interaction and not in any sort of context, I can already react and judge this film and say it is underwhelming.

Just like I did when the Dark Knight trailer came out. I could tell that Ledger would be completely ripping off Nicholson and that Nolan had made a horrible mistake.

Just like when I saw the trailer for the Phantom Menace and knew that it would be a completely engrossing and compelling emotional journey into the back story of the characters that I loved.

LMAOO i saw it i was like wtf is this? that trailer was horrible. it will do nothing for people who have no idea what this movie is about.

To be fair it was billed as “First Footage” and “First Clip” by MTV where it first aired. They haven’t even finished filming either, so this was just to get something out there. At least they are marketing the action aspect over the alternative.

Jennifer Lawrence was terrific in Winter’s Bone so I won’t prejudge this too much. But I’m guessing this will be PG-13 and toothless. Also the plot kinda sounds like the Stephen King story The Long Walk, which BTW really needs a good film adaptation

    • Tj!

I totally agree on the “Long Walk” movie but not BEFORE a FAITHFUL adaptation of “The Running Man”. As far as Lawrence is concerned I think she will do just fine as Katniss because quite frankly, she is the same as her character in “Winter’s Bone” I’m halfway through “Catch a Fire” and every time I get sick of the 16 year old girl in love bullcrap, something cool happens to get me suckered back into it. I think this might be a case where the films are better than the book although you wouldn’t guess it from this trailer. Only thing I really “loved” about it was the MokingJay call at the end. A nice touch…

Look, if that was supposed to tease me, it didn’t do it’s job. It didn’t do much of anything. They should have waited to have a proper teaser. I would take a lot of voice overs of the distinctive character’s and their respective actors over the burning logo instead.

And wow, does Jennifer Lawrence look different on set. I can see Lawrence in the film and the screenshots. I hardly recognized her in the intro.

    Apocalyptic nonsense.
I don’t get people (or filmmakers) that’ll like for the end of the world
to happen. That’s not entertainment, it’s nihilism.

  • Scottie

I’ve never read any of the books, but I’m a fan of dystopian films, so the premise intrigued me. However, this trailer is absolutely dreadful.

It reminded me of the woods scene in X-Men: The Last Stand. I’ve never seen any of the Twilight films, so I can’t say if it’s reminiscent of those or not.

Anyways, if this was supposed to establish the movie with people who have never heard of it, they failed miserably. My educated guess is that this was put out on the VMA’s, knowing the fan-boys and -girls will be in attendance and watching.

Hopefully the real trailer, which will most likely come out this winter, will peak my interest.

i can’t say I am interested in reading the books. I will see this movie because some of the best of young hollywood is in it.

The teaser didn’t give you much because they just don’t have much to show yet.

Xander Ludwig is playing Cato so it’s a must see on my movie list.

  • Enigmatic

Wow l love how people completely judge a movie by a teaser. I have a feeling this was more for the people who were already fans of the book. I just finished reading it and I loved it. I can’t wait to read the next two and to see this movie. I saw Jennifer Lawrence in Winters Bone and think she will be great as Katniss Everdeen.

jennifer lawrence is a dreadful actress who play the same character and put the same facial expression in all her movies.

    • jymmmymack

You mean Academy-Award nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence? Because Ree Dolly, a backwoods daughter of a meth cooker, is the same character as Raven, a shape-shifting mutant who wants to fit in. Those sound EXACTLY the same to me.

  • Hrothgar

Jennifer Lawrence amazed me in Winter’s Bone. That in itself is reason enough to watch this. I also read and enjoyed the first book, but I too think that they’re going to temper the violence quite a bit. That’s disappointing, but oh well.

  • Mit

Yes, jennifer lawrence is a horrible actress overrated with an annoying chubby face.

    • Chris

      You’re the problem with society.

  • Scotty

Does the tune at the end sound like X-Files?

I swear to Bob, if I hear another comparison of Twilight to The Hunger Games, I will literally rip my hair from my scalp.
First off: If you haven’t even read The Hunger Games but are comparing this stupid “teaser” to it then you’re an idiot.
Secondly: they are two totally and completely different ideas/movies/books ect. Katniss and Bella are not even remotely alike in any way/shape/form ect. Being a fan of both, I should know.
