Here’s the latest word on acquisitions at the European Film Market in Berlin:
- The Weinstein Company has acquired U.S. rights to Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as mathematician Alan Turing, for a reported record of $7 million.
- RADiUS-TWC has acquired U.S. rights to Joe Lynch’s action thriller, Everly, starring Salma Hayek, Togo Igawa, Masashi Fujimoto, and Hiroyuki Watanabe.
- Open Road has acquired U.S. rights to the Barry Levinson comedy, Rock the Kasbah, starring Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Shia LaBeouf, and Zooey Deschanel.

First up from Deadline comes news of the record-breaking acquisition purchase of rights to The Imitation Game by The Weinstein Company. Cumberbatch stars as “Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII.” Keira Knightley also stars in the film, which will be positioned as a major awards contender.

DIMENSION AND RADiUS-TWC FALL FOR ‘EVERLY’
THE BLACK LIST SCRIPT STARS SALMA HAYEK LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN HER BEFORE
(BERLIN) February 8, 2014 - Dimension and RADiUS-TWC are proud to announce the preemptive acquisition of US rights to EVERLY, an action thriller starring Salma Hayek, which is currently in post-production. Directed by Joe Lynch, the film co-stars Togo Igawa (LAST SAMURAI; MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA), Masashi Fujimoto (SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE) and Hiroyuki Watanabe.
Dimension and RADiUS have slated a fourth quarter 2014 release. Sierra/Affinity are handling international sales.
The Black List script by Yale Hannon is an intense action thriller centered on a down-on-her-luck woman (Hayek) who is forced to fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss, while trying to save her estranged mother and daughter.
The film was produced and financed by recently launched Singapore venture Vega, Baby! and produced via Adam Ripp and Rob Paris’ Crime Scene Pictures. Luke Rivett of Anonymous Content and Andrew Pfeffer also produced. Rizal Risjad, Ricky Budhrani and Paul Green are the executive producers. Brett Hedblom is the co-producer.
According to RADiUS co-presidents Tom Quinn and Jason Janego: “We’ve been on the hunt for a female driven action franchise and we’ve finally found it in EVERLY. Salma is utterly transcendent.”
Crime Scene Pictures’ Ripp and Paris go on to say: “We’re thrilled to be in business with Dimension and RADiUS. Bob, Tom and Jason have been passionately tracking the project for some time so we couldn’t be happier to have them as partners.”
Quinn and Janego negotiated the deal with CAA, Paris and David Boyle.
Rock the Kasbah
OPEN ROAD FILMS ACQUIRES ROCK THE KASBAH
ALL STAR CAST FEATURING BILL MURRAY, BRUCE WILLIS, KATE HUDSON, DANNY MCBRIDE, SHIA LABEOUF AND ZOOEY DESCHANEL, DIRECTED BY BARRY LEVINSON
LOS ANGELES, CA, February 6, 2014 – Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the original comedy ROCK THE KASBAH, which is being financed by QED International and Venture Forth. The announcement was made jointly today by Tom Ortenberg, CEO of OpenRoad Films and Bill Block, CEO of QED International. Open Road Films is planning a wide release.
As previously announced, in ROCK THE KASBAH Bill Murray is joined by Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Shia LaBeouf and Zooey Deschanel. The film is written by Mitch Glazer and directed by Barry Levinson. QED’s Bill Block, Venture Forth’s Jacob Pechenik, Shangri-La Entertainment’s Steve Bing and Mitch Glazer will produce ROCK THE KASBAH. Brian Grazer and Tom Freston are Executive Producers. Production will start in June 2014.
Ortenberg stated, “We were blown away by the script for ROCK THE KASBAH. We are thrilled to re-team with Bill Block and his team at QED and looking forward to working with legendary filmmaker Barry Levinson and this incredible ensemble cast led by the one and only Bill Murray.”

ROCK THE KASBAH is the story of “Richie Vance,” a has-been rock manager who takes his last remaining client on a USO tour of Afghanistan. When Richie finds himself in Kabul, abandoned, penniless and without his passport, he discovers a young girl with an extraordinary voice and manages her through Afghanistan’s version of “American Idol”, the wildly popular “Afghan Star”.
QED is representing the film at the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival. QED’s Berlin sales slate also includes TIME OUT OF MIND, starring Richard Gere and directed by Oren Moverman; FURY directed by David Ayer andstarring BradPitt, Shia Labeouf, Michael Pena and Logan Lerman; and THE FAMILY FANG, directed by Jason Bateman and starring Bateman and Nicole Kidman.
